When they pump everything up to the same level, it just sounds wimpy. My trick to avoiding insane loudness spikes is to set the volume to the highest you can tolerate. And when it drops, don't touch it. Just let it do its thing.

Popular Post SteveMc 2,674
The Last Jedi by John Williams I must report that my opinion of this score has changed considerably. Going in the first time, I was expecting something different, an extension of the end of TFA in sound and tone. This was not to be, but, listening now, I'm starting to greatly appreciate the score for what it is. This is not a popular blockbuster score. In tone and structure, it actually brings John's concert works to mind. The writing is of the highest order, really. The action music is impressively intricate, and the treatment of themes quite interesting. It is a score that rewards a careful pursual. The Finale and end credits, however, are rather weak. Nevertheless, an impressive and worthy later-career work. Bespin, Holko and Taikomochi

The score is full of themes and little motifs that are interwoven with each other in such amazing waysthat it simply blows my mind. Maybe it's true that the album is a bit too long, but I think that just like one or two cues would be deleted if I did some kind of edit, because I love it so much. I think this is the best Marvel score to date and is one of my favorites of the genre.

Popular Post Holko 9,526
LLL E.T. This one will always be like returning to an old childhood friend, but with a newfound appreciation. CE3K is an encounter through an adult's mind - frightening, makes no sense at first, but growing into childlike wonder at the end. This is an encounter through a child's mind, who's curious and friendly all the way through. It really is like an informal sequel in some aspects. (Also the family parallels: Close Encounters tries to deal with lack of communication being the reason for a family drifting apart, at least until Roy decides to just fuck off of the planet after learning this, while E.T. is about dealing with, and picking up the pieces of a family after the drift resulted in a breakup.) Keys is a low-laying, but ever-present oppressive force (after E.T. Alone, of course), slowly growing more and more threatening. The House represents the initial confusion and uneasiness well. I loooove how The Call and the Friendship theme are combined to form the Flying Theme - they're basically fragments of it, representing different aspects, being present a lot and foreshadowing the main deal. It's all constant buildup until E.T. is Alive starts bursting open, it pulls back a bit, then goes all out from the bike chase until the end with the incredible finale, marking one of the best combinations of music and motion picture in film history. Top 5 Williams, for sure. This release is the one which finally prompted me to start giving up plunderin' on the high seas of the Shrine, and start putting some money back into this industry I now respect immensely.
