Popular Post crumbs 14,319
JW at Film Night in May 2018, before performing Confrontation with Supreme Leader Snookie and Finale to the crowd: Quote Kathy Kennedy and the producers at Disney recently called me to ask about coming back for another Star Wars, the final one, and reunite with JJ Abrams one last time. I put down the phone and asked my granddaughter, who had The Force Awakens on her computer machine, to play the scene where Scherzo for X-Wings was meant to be audible in the movie. I then hung up the phone and ripped the cable from the wall. - John Williams Matt C, Will, Bilbo and 1 other 1

Fancyarcher 350
Abrams is fine safe choice. Considering they need a new director fast, it makes sense they'd go to J.J. to finish off the trilogy too. Maybe he'll repeat ROTJ, but I can't complain. crumbs 14,319
I just hope this more or less confirms JW will come back (with the comfortability of having worked with JJ already) and all the platitudes after TFA weren't just JW being diplomatic about their collaboration. I still think that whole production was difficult for JW, with all the editorial changes and not being able to watch the entire film before starting his score. It was a silly way to write and it's pretty incredible how it turned out (considering). I'm not loving the idea of that process repeating for his final Star Wars score, especially if the conventionally scored TLJ is a revelation by comparison. Outside of Jedi Steps, JJ's style really didn't allow the music to breathe properly, and constantly rewriting cues due to tonal changes and erratic direction would've been exhausting and frustrating. And that isn't factoring the amount of editing, tracking and poor mixing the score suffered in the final cut. So hopefully JJ will have more assured directing next time and won't be cutting right until the last weeks of post. Will
Fancyarcher 350
I'm sure Williams will have more time to do IX, TFA's process seems to be more of a result of last minute changes then anything. crumbs 14,319
I thought JJ's editing team worked on one reel at a time, regardless of the film. It will likely be the same process as TFA, though maybe they'll have more reels finished before showing JW anything. JW may prefer the film is in a less fluid state when he starts writing this one, to avoid another avalanche of revisions. He might like scoring for Rey but I doubt another 3 hours of music is high on his agenda to finish the saga. Will

They seemed to really get along in the 60 Minutes preview and the way they spoke about each other, and Williams seemed genuinely excited about the project as a whole. I doubt it was just PR or that his comments about the mix/editing came from a place of serious frustration. The treatment of TFA's score was absolutely nothing out of the ordinary for him. And as far as the scoring process goes, I'm guessing he didn't love the rewrites or how the film was edited, but I think he was honest when he considered it a luxury to have all year with multiple sessions, especially when his surgery became an issue. I dunno, if anything, I feel like if he was having second thoughts for any reason about his ability or desire to do IX at this point, JJ would be one of the most effective motivators. From all the edits to the quiet mix, the score got very few opportunities to shine in the final mix (and boy has JW made his disapproval clear, with constant digs at TFA's mix during performances of Scherzo for X-Wings, edited into oblivion and practically inaudible in the film). Abrams also comes across as a pain in the ass, and probably the reason JW wrote half of TFA twice. He didn't have a clear vision, couldn't make decisions on tone and expected JW to "find" the film for him -- until what he found was wrong and needed a re-write (Jakku Village, Han Solo's death, Parade Grounds cue, possible prototype Jedi Steps, etc.) As much as Williams goes around touring with that little quip to 'Scherzo", it seems more good-natured than a malicious dig. Williams has been around long enough to know to expect that stuff in post-production, and it certainly isn't the first time he's experienced editing/volume issues in the Star Wars franchise. Williams has had nothing but unbelievably kind and gracious things to say about JJ and they clearly got along very well during the recording process. I highly doubt there's any troubled waters between them. crumbs, mrbellamy and Will

Popular Post mrbellamy 6,293
I'm just glad the music situation essentially hasn't changed. Williams will get first dibs, otherwise it's Giacchino. In a way, I'm a little relieved that it's gone back to JJ since there's not really the same excitement or curiosity here as with a new collaborator. We kinda know the drill so while I want Williams to finish the saga, we already have a John Williams score for a JJ Abrams-directed Star Wars movie. It's easier to look at this one as just a nice bonus. And if worst comes to worst, then I'm at least glad the sequel trilogy is 2/3 Williams. Considering Giacchino was always on deck for TFA as well, I prefer that he'd be coming off of a foundation here, and I'd much rather have him directed by Abrams than Trevorrow, considering Abrams is personally invested in the new material and has insight into how Williams approached it. There's a better chance that they'd be more conscious of finding places for all that stuff, whereas who knows how Trevorrow would have wanted it. Abrams writing/directing, in general, I'm fine with it. He made the bed, might as well make him sleep in it. I liked TFA and actually found that his reverence for Star Wars brought out more restraint in his direction than usual, so I'm hoping he'll want to give this some suitably slower "final" quality to it. Not expecting the greatest answers to the questions of TFA, and as far as the inevitable "poetry" with ROTJ goes, I'm pretty indifferent. Hoping for more surprises but the only thing that would really make me think "Alright, fuck this guy" is a fourth Death Star. crumbs, Will, Cerebral Cortex and 3 others
