(Kathleen Kennedy should've slapped some sense into him when he signed on for this.) How about he tells us who's cast in Episode VII, but he doesn't have to tell us who they're playing? I'd be fine with that.

mstrox 6,651
Given the source, the Chewbacca information is a pretty good bet (also, a few weeks ago it came out that Mayhew had to back out of conventions he had scheduled for this summer due to "filming" - not too much of a filming career for that guy outside of those four movies), but I'm leary of anything until it's officially reported by StarWars.com or a Lucasfilm rep.I wouldn't expect any of the major players in the post-ROTJ mythology to appear - Jacen, Jaina, Anakin, Ben,Mara Jade, etc - at least not in the same capacity/characterization as the novels - and nobody has indicated that they would. As such, it's reasonable to assume that the events that led up to Chewie being smashed by a moon in Vector Prime would not have happened in the film chronology.I'm glad they're leaving behind the previously existing source material. I'm making my way reading through it all now (in order of release), and while the stuff is okay as far as books go, there isn't much that would be effective as a movie. Also, I wouldn't want to go into the new Episodes knowing all or most of what was going to happen. There's precedent for it anyway - Lucas cherrypicked ideas/events/names from the books and used them in the prequels and Clone Wars; there was other info that was completely contradicted, altered, discarded, etc. The hardline from Lucasfilm even before the Disney purchase was that the "true" canon was what you saw on film - the movies and the Clone Wars series. The books, comics, video games, etc all fall within their own canon separate from the movies. If you love the books (as I do with some), these movies won't make the books disappear. They'll remain in the same subcanon they've always been considered.

nightscape94 965
I would think that Star Wars enthusiasts would enjoy the direction of disregarding the EU since there are surprises to be had. Do you really want them to make a Star Wars series based on old crappy third rate novels? DarthDementous
Wojo 2,453
Enthusiasts who have grown up with the EU in books, comics, and games will just have to accept that it all basically now represents the same type of fictional parallel universe that Star Trek fiction has occupied for a lot longer. Star Trek novels and comics have never been considered as canon by the shows and movies, but this has never stopped fans from buying them or authors from making their living. It's not going to be the end of the world for new Star Wars footage to push off into untold stories, and it could be exciting. Nobody is going to make all your Zahn novels and Dark Horse comics turn into blank sheets after all.
