Hey, Cannon managed to do it for $22 mill back in the 80s (we'll gloss over the fact that its box office take was 5 million less than that, which contributed to Cannon closing down).

Studios Quietly Go on Hiring Spree for AI Specialist Jobs Amid Picket Line Anxiety

Netflix is hiring a $ 900,000-per-year AI product manager, Disney is looking for generative AI specialists, and Sony seeks an AI ethics expert, while the tech becomes a staple of SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild picket signs.

The only faith I have in movies anymore are storytellers who know what they’re doing. That’s why I’m genuinely excited for James Gunn’s DCU because in my opinion he is a genius storyteller when it comes to characters and plot. I’ve loved nearly everything he’s made. So many writers nowadays just don’t know how to write a good story. For example the writers they got at the MCU and Star Wars lately.

I wish I shared your lofty opinion of him. I find him competent. Without the huge, guaranteed box-office results of massive franchise films inflating the perception of their talent, I'm not sure there is any director from the Disney system we would have heard about 40 years ago. Gunn maybe stands above, but it's like a duck in a swimming pool, it will always appear graceful next to toddler learning to swim.

His Suicide Squad and Peacemaker showed me he can make anything work. Also guardians 3 sealed the deal for me on his emotional takes. I do really love his style so far.

Hollywood already gave Michael Bay his own franchise based on an existing property, and the result was the utter excrescence that was the Transformers franchise.

And I'm pretty sure he prefers to do smaller budget action movies these days.

Not a film I watched recently, but a good article:
The Haunting at 60: is it still one of the scariest films ever made?

It isn't, but it's damn effective for its time. No doubt Mike Flanagan looked to it while creating his superior interpretation.

It's damn effective for today as well. It draws you into the mindset of its protagonist (if you let it), and thus her terror becomes the audience's terror.

(Also, it looks absolutely stunning)

I'm convinced that it was a major influence on Wright's Last Night in SOHO.

Question: I finally got my hands on the ultimate blu-ray edition for Goblet of Fire and was surprised to find that the maximum movie mode track isn't mixed with the movie at all. It's just... voices. Is that how it's normally done? I prefer having commentary while the movie is playing in the background, personally.

Has anyone seen the new Exorcist movie? I was hoping it would be at least decent (considering I don't care that much for exorcism-themed horror movies), but apparently it's another shitty entry on the Exorcist franchise.

The first hour is actually pretty good. Realistic and natural look and mood, much like the original. Slow buildup. Also some really clever editing. Then it falls a bit apart in the last half, IMO.

Thanks, @Thor, that's another £15 saved.

I'll watch out for it, at my local thrift store... for 25p

Yeah, I'm really not a fan of possession horror movies. The first Exorcist is great, but 98% of what came later is just a pale imitation, so much so that I hardly find those horrifying or even creepy.

That said, The Exorcism of Emily Rose is decent.

For these Exorcist movies it is like these shark movies. The first one from the 70s is still unbeaten and will probably be forever.

Yep, the original 'Exorcist' still packs a wallop. Recent possession/exorcism movies like 'Prey for the Devil' and 'The Pope's Exorcist', while okay, leave me indifferent. The tired and overused "jump scares" don't work on me anymore. 'Evil Dead Rise' was pretty effective though for its creepiness.
