Naïve Old Fart 9,534
Yes, Steef, as in "luscious". Remember that the current Blu has been desaturated to suit the director's original intent, but seen at the cinema (which is where I saw it) it's a lovely-looking film. Some of the visuals were a little nifty, like him climbing down the side of the house. It's a good romantic horror movie and the score and the great atmospheric visuals to their damnedest to sell the prosaic horror stuff. The stagebound Coppola version might be a good demo reel for handmade fx but it's really a jittery kindergarten of a movie. It seems to be made by film students flying high as a kite. I'm not sure about that, but I saw the version which was released in cinemas. Perhaps Badham should have stuck to his guns, and shot it in black and white. I, for one, am glad that he didn't. Wow. I've never seen that still. Thanks for posting, Pub. German tv always had black bars. The evil deed was done on video cassettes. The dramatic scenes benefitted from color - i never understood why Badham filmed a movie in full Technicolor to do a half-assed desaturation later. A good b/w movie would have been lighted much differently.

Incanus 5,715
None But the Brave is a nice glimpse into Williams' dramatic writing from the early era which already contains shades of his later stuff. The song version (not done by Williams) is atrocious though, as so many of those themes turned into songs were in that period apart from a select few. The best Dracula movie, by far. The atmosphere, the setting are just unique.... It's a visual treat, and that alone could carry the movie (well, that and the score). Plus, Winona Ryder was hot! The '79 Dracula is a minor masterpiece, whereas Bram Stoker's Dracula is a bit of a mess. The latter is known for being the most accurate to the book, but it's far inferior to the '79 refreshingly new interpretation of the book. It's not just a hidden JW score gem, but also a hidden JW movie gem. BTW, when you are looking for hidden JG movie gems: Outland, Under Fire, The Russia House. Well, I cannot judge the 1979 Dracula because I have never seen it, but the Coppola version of Dracula sure is a masterpiece (too)! The music, on the other hand, is a different matter. JW's score is clearly the superior one, although the other one is fantastic as well.
