It’s kind of a part of his self taught image, but it’s known that he reads music. He writes in Cubase but he obviously knows how to read music. A collaborator of his was once asked about it in an interview but can’t remember who it was but he set the record straight.

I’ve also seen multiple images of him reading and making notes with a pencil on the sheet music at recording sessions and rehearsals for the live shows.

Like Elfman (who was known as a whistler very early in his career if I’m not mistaken), I’m sure that when he started out he probably wasn’t very good at reading notation but that was in the 80s.

Yeah it’s a shame, I loved the Nolan HZ collaborations. But as Zimmer decided to pass on Tenet after the experience on Dunkirk, I wonder if he himself is happy with his decision. I kind of think so as he is working closely with Villeneuve now.

I also prefer Legend to Mask score wise. The first film is way way better though. The opening track from Legend has my favorite variation of the main theme probably, when the strings come in around halfway through the cue. That variation is so good and full of energy!

No thanks! Finishing S1 of Westworld was already hard enough.

This probably won't be good either.

I liked when they had a track by track analysis, like Goldsmith's Star Trek TMP from 2012 or (don't kill me) the old Hook extended edition.

It's much easier to follow the score and themes when each track is individually analyzed, instead of something like "the love theme goes in tracks A, B and C while track D has a different performance..."

Don't know where exactly to put this information, saw this post from one of the composers of the upcoming Avatar game and I found it amusing how Horner's name wasn't mentioned at all in an interview with Pinar Toprak ("main" composer), but it's the first thing Neal Acree talks about it.

I think removing messages from films is dumb as many or maybe even most great films in history have had some kind of message attached. However I do agree that movies that don’t integrate messages into the story in a good and organic way can become a bit distracting at times.

It has occasionally happened that messages I agree with take me out a movie or show as they seem added by some executive rather than being an organic part of the storytelling.

I think it’s insincere to say that overt messages in movies is the main problem with the lack of box office success fir recent Disney movies as it seems people just don’t care as much about new releases that Covid taught them that they can watch at home in a short while.

I cannot recommend Man Men enough. It certainly is a show that has a lot of facets to it, but it might not be obvious from a thumbnail or a synopsis. Besides being a semi-historical account of the birth of modern marketing, it’s such an interesting premise and time period. It might seem as if all they do is smoke and drink and fuck but there is intrigue abound. And the clothes are amazing (and I’m not talking about the women’s fashion, I would kill for those suits that the men wear).

Having listened to the whole FYC several times: This is a beautiful score. Dial of Destiny probably still edges it out for my favorite score of the year, but Powell comes close. I love how it's clearly in Powell's animated style but at the same time feels fresh. "Follow Me, But Not Too Close" might be the most gloriously, unabashedly optimistic cue I've heard in years. A wholesome, life-affirming score from start to finish.

Mr. Who reacted to Knight of Ren in James Newton Howard - THE BALLAD OF SONGBIRDS AND SNAKES
Finally watched the movie, and the score works a lot better in context than on album, which actually has made me appreciate it a lot more than on the first standalone listens. The movie is not as action-focused as I thought, being concentrated in the middle section, and I think all of the music from that part is in there, but there might be around 20 minutes, perhaps more, of unreleased music, some of it containing nice variations on both old and new themes.

At first I though the score didn't introduce any new ideas, but after watching the movie, it's clear there's at least two of them, a vocal idea used for Lucy Gray, and a string-based melody that seems to represent the relationship between Snow and Lucy.

Lucy's motif gets introduced in Assigning the Mentors, at 1:27

It also appears in the middle of Meet the Mentors, in Hunger is a Weapon and in Strategy, and plays one last time in Lucy?

The motif is followed by the theme for Lucy and Snow, at 1:16, and it appears three more times on the album, but I think at least two or three more times in the movie. It's introduced in Meet the Mentors (together with some strings that remind me of The Arsenal), and plays again in Saving Snow, in a pretty efective moment in the film:

I feel there are some additional motifs, but I haven't been able to identify them yet.

I was also surprised by the importance of the songs in the film, with several of them quite memorable in the way they're used, like the new versions of The Hanging Tree, or the way the song The Old Therebefore / Singing At Snakes overlaps with one of JNH's score cues, I think it's Get Her Out, in one of the most intense moments of the film. Definitely needed context to appreciate the score more, as I do now!
