Mr. Who got a reaction from Docteur Qui in HOUSE OF THE DRAGON
I will write down my thoughts on the episode later but in short, I loved it! I was expecting more direct conflict but the pacing and the plotting was incredible so I’m happy they took the time! The episode felt a lot like a GOT premiere episode, especially S2E1, where the episode ends on Jeoffry’s purge of Robert’s bastards.
For people interested in the show, I can recommend the Behind The Scenes show called The House that Dragons Built which has one episode detailing the making of the episodes!
It’s also great that GOT veteran Alan Taylor is back in the directors chair after the unfortunate departure of Miguel Sapochnik who did such a great job in S1, both as director and as co showrunner.

He claimed Vaghar after it's original master, Daemon's second wife and daughter of Rhaenys & Corlys, died.
And to those questioning how Team Black found out about Luce.
During the conversation between Rhaenys & Daemon early in the episode Rhaenys talks about grief. During that talk she mentioned Rhaenyra found out her son died through a raven. I assumed from that that Lord Baratheon send a raven.
That's just my take on it.

Yeah, the Greens have those two themes associated with them so far, and if you listen to The Green Dress, Fate of the Kingdoms and Interests of the Realm, they present both the Hightower theme and the Green Alliance motif (that repeating 8-note motif) in full. The Hightower theme also appears in the beginning of Compromise and Consequence.

Great job on this analysis video! I don’t speak Spanish but with the subtitles it’s easy to understand!

Well, I really like when a movie or show allows a composer to build such a rich thematic tapestry, and I think Djawadi's work is such a great example of this, and I love listening to it and finding all these little thematic connections. If anyone's interested in a bit of an in-depth analysis, here's my video analysis of the main musical themes that appear in the first season!
It's in spanish (my native language) but you can activate subtitles in english in case you need them. I don't know if anyone's really interested in this, but I just love doing this kind of things and being able to share them with people who might enjoy them as much!

This is interesting new info. So 10+8+8+8+8 would mean 42 episodes in 5 seasons vs 40 episodes in 4 seasons (as seems to have been the original plan).
We get almost the same amount of episodes but with a different season structure plus two more episodes. I won't complain as this decision was also made with GRRM's input when they reshuffled the season structure between S1 and S2's production. I do think this will result in way more wait for the fans though for subsequent seasons but maybe HBO like to have more seasons going into the future so they can alternate between HOTD and AKOTSK going forward.
Potentially if each HOTD season takes 2 years to make, the release structure could look like this:
2024: House of the Dragon S2
2025: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms S1
2026: House of the Dragon S3
2027: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms S2
2028: House of the Dragon S4
2029: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms S3
2030: House of the Dragon S5
2031: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms S4
By this point they might either continue HOTD by moving forwards or backwards in time to do Blackfyre Rebellions or Aegon's Conquest leading towards the reign of Jaeherys the Conciliator (who was seen in the prologue of HOTDs1). Aegon's Conquest has also been thought of as it's own show so HBO can go a number of ways at this point as the material is available from GRRM.
GRRM has also said that he has the outlines of 9 Knight of the Seven Kingdoms stories (though only 3 are released at this point) taking place during the Blackfyre Rebellions and the final one taking place at Summerhall (book readers know what this is about but won't spoil it here). So either HBO include the Blackfyre Rebellions storyline in some way in the AKOTSK show, thus showing it from a slightly different perspective than focusing only on the royals, which leaves them free to make a new show about Aegon's Conquest which then would run in parallel to later seasons of AKOTSK.
If they do this, a potential release schedule could look like this:
2032: Aegon's Conquest S1
2033: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms S5
2034: Aegon's Conquest S2
2035: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms S6
2036: Aegon's Conquest S3
2037: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms S7
2038: Aegon's Conquest S4
etc
Now I have no idea what the plans are from HBO and GRRM as other successor shows, such as 10 000 Ships and Nine Voyages are also being discussed (though not greenlit) so it might look very different and they might want to do Blackfyre as a potential HOTDs6 to run forwards in time towards Robert's Rebellion, but this is at least a potential way of doing things. A lot also depends on GRRM's output in regard to AKOTSK stories. He might have already written a few but might not have released them because of potential spoilers for Winds of Winter and Dream of Spring (relating to a possible Targ pretender) and he might also haver tough versions of these stories which could potentially be developed further by the writers of the AKOTSK show depending on what happens.

I just finished rewatching the whole first season and am again super impressed. It’s a great show which takes its time to introduce the characters and their motivations before the conflict starts properly. The score is a big part of what makes the show so good as the rich thematic catalogue of themes underlines and clarifies broader themes of the story without dialogue having to spell it out. furthermore, the use of both the “main”themes and also the non character or location based themes such as the solitude theme or the Silent Sisters themes help set the mood in such a great way and highlights the importance of thematic scoring in film and TV.
It’s really impressive how well they managed to cast all the characters, including both the young and the old cast. The switch from young Rhaenyra and alicent to their older counterparts was seamless (even more so during the rewatch) and everybody does a great job. Especially enjoyed some performances of the smaller characters like Lyonel Strong, see Harwin Strong, Mysaria, Harlena, Lord Beesbury, Vaemond and Laena Velaryon.
The final action scene of the season with Lucerys on Arrax being chased by Aemond on Vhagar was as impressive on second watch and that shot of the shadow of Vhagar appearing in the sky above Arrax is so fucking cool (and scary). Love the subtlety of the storytelling where Aemond is responsible for what happens, by taunting and demanding one of Luke’s eyes and chasing him in the storm but ultimately briefly loosing control of his dragon. The scene is also underscored with the Dance of Dragons theme, which I hope will be used more in S2 as it has been teased throughout S1 in quite a few dragon related sequences!
As a book reader, I was briefly worried when it was announced that HBO was doing successor shows to GOT but it seems that HBO knows what works and what doesn’t and have Martin’s involvement as well. they struck gold with Ryan Condal as showrunner and head writer and I hope the departure of Miguel Sapochnik won’t affect the upcoming seasons (as he has been responsible for a lot of the practical and visual aspects of the show which they can now continue to build on). Another GOT legend, Alan Taylor is directing episodes in S2!
HBO’s other upcoming GOT show, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms seems like a great opportunity to show another aspect of Westeros, where the focus lies less on the politics and conflicts of the great houses and more on smaller stories set against the backdrop of these political games and in this case the Blackfyre Rebellions. If HBO somehow can manage to include the blackfyre storyline in this show, it would be interesting. I believe HBO can pull it off with the right people in charge. Overall the approach taken with the successor shows (so far) has been perfect!

Well, I didn't have time to re-watch season 1 before season 2's premiere in 2 days. However, I do think I am going to have time to re-watch the final 3 episodes of the season. I think this is a good set of episodes to rewatch because its after the final time jump, so all the final actors are set, and so much great stuff happens in them. I rewatched episode 8 at lunch break today while working out, something I don't mind doing with a show I've seen before.
House of the Dragon 1x08 The Lord of the Tides (rewatch)
Boy, this is probably one of the best episodes of the whole season, eh? If Paddy Constantine didn't win all the awards for this performance, he should have. This episode blends political machinations with character development so expertly, its remarkable! The central plot point of whether Driftmark should go to Vaemond or Luke (or Rhaenys) and why and on whose authority is surprisingly captivating, and also is such a great set up for so many great character moments and interactions.
It's kind of surprising to learn that Rhaenyra and Daemon and their whole family have avoided King's Landing for 6 years as their children have grown up a lot and they've birthed not one but two more of the King's grandhildren in that time. It's so fascinating to see the castle changed around, all the Targaryen imagery and banners gone and replaced by Alicent's religion's banners and 7 pointed stars. The blending of religion into the politics is really interesting, and also the way religion blends into the character development is great too. Little details like these tell you a lot about Alicent without spelling it out, and also little moments like Viserys agreeing to Alicent leading a prayer before dinner quickly tells you a lot about how their relationship is now too.
Seeing Otto and Alicent basically run the council is a little chilling, and the coldness with which her and Rhaenyra reunite is wonderfully played. But man is it fun watching Daemon's face throughout this episode, Matt Smith gives so many small facial movements that reveal so much about what he's thinking again without spelling it out. I love his energy and that you never know what to expect from him. The best moments are of course the two big scenes he has with his brother, first at his bedside, and later by the throne. But also I love when Vaemon is basically deciding whether he is going to call Rhaenyra's kids bastards or not and they show you Daemon's face a few times before he quickly utters "say it". Great stuff!
The scene where Visery shows up at the meeting about Driftmark in his weird mask to take the throne is incredible. I wouldn't know how to make a scene of a person walking from one end of a room to another and sitting down compelling but boy, they sure did here. Showing everyone's expressions as its all happening is perfect, and the moment where Visery realizes its Daemon who has come to help him sit, and Daemon who puts the crown back on his head, is amazing. It's especially nice to watch Otto's face in this scene, and the dinner scene. You can tell that he wants things to be happening differently than they are for his own gain, yet also that he does respect Viserys too. It's perfectly played.
The little side story about Aemond raping a handmaiden and barely remembering it, and his mother having to cover it up, is more fascinating character insight into both him and her as well, along with Helaena, who is certainly one of the most tragic figures of the show. He explanation of what being married to Aegon is like is darkly comedic and woefully sad, and wonderfully juxtaposed with her happily dancing with Jace moments later. And she mentions the beast under the boards in this episode. I'm not sure what to make of the reveal that Talya is passing info to Mysaria. I remember thinking most of the season that Mysaria's plot is undercooked but maybe there will be more to it later.
I just love that Viserys wanted to have a big dinner with his family in an attempt to squash all the beefs within the families. And I also love that it ALLLLLMMMMMMMMMOST worked! I feel like Rhaenyra and Alicent had an actual bonding moment and understanding of each other, and even Otto seemed potentially moved by Visery's speech and everything else. But the kids man, the kids can't help themselves. Aegon is such a dick to Jace, and yet Jace plays things as best as he possible can, and manages to get through all that. But then, the pig arrives, and Aemond can't help himself. I love the way Daemon steps up to protect his children and Aemond realizes there's nothing else to do. The show is teasing a showdown between these two that I am so here for!
And I didn't think about this the first time I watched it, but the earlier scene of Alicent and Aegon actually plays into what she says at this dinner, as does her newfound religion. She's so disgusted by Aegon's behavior, and so kind to the girl he raped (and she even hugs Helaena right after too), that that seems to have an impact on her deciding to state at the dinner that Rhaenyra will make a great queen. I honestly believe at this moment that she will back Rhaenyra at that point. But then, man, watching that ending scene again is tragic all over again. It's so clear that Viserys thinks he's talking to Rhaenyra about the prophecy again, yet the words are chosen so carefully that you can understand why Alicent believes that he's telling that it should be her son on the throne. His death and Alicen'ts misunderstanding of his final words are such a great, great way to basically cap off the extended prologue of sorts that the show has been up to this point, and brilliantly flings us right into a civil war so nicely. I love it!

Mr. Who reacted to Knight of Ren in HOUSE OF THE DRAGON
Another great episode! It starts right away with the aftermath of King Viserys' death and the consequences of that, and I loved how the scheming, the intrigue and the conflict slowly escalates during the whole episode, until it culminates in that fantastic coronation sequence! Even if I'm not a big fan of Alicent, she was very interesting here, and I love her development as a character, from the very first episodes, where she was not being taken seriously, to the strong and imposing queen she has become, even if she still is being controled by the men around her. Her conversation with Rhaenys was great, and I think the two of them are some of my favorite characters in the show. Rhaenys' entrance at the end, right after Aegon's coronation was so bad-ass, and really cemented her love and allegiance for Rhaenyra and House Targaryen, and she made it clear to the Greens that they're messing with the wrong family!
The music was on point, and those two released tracks are proof of it. I love how Djawadi uses the piano first with Viserys' Theme and then with Alicent's Theme, to represent the tragic loss that is the death of Viserys the Peaceful, and I love the little motif that pops up in both cues, which gets developed a lot during the episode. Also, the music during the coronation sequence was so great and I love that the Iron Throne Theme has been so prominent lately!
As always, I analyzed the score more in-depth in my blog, so feel free to check it out and leave your thoughts on it! Hope you enjoy!

No idea about new themes, as I don't know much about the story and the new characters, but I hope we get to hear again some themes from GoT, like the House Stark theme, which I think is a given because of the appearance of Creagan Stark!
Also, great to hear it's been officially renewed!

Mr. Who got a reaction from Edmilson in Where Have All The Memorable Movie Themes Gone? Hollywood Composers Speak Out (New report on Slash Film)
It’s ironic that John Murphy is saying this stuff while himself writing a super bland boring theme-less score for the last guardians of the galaxy movie while the first 2 scores by Tyler Bates had a fun main theme…
In general I disagree with the premise as there are lots of great scores with great themes being written today. I think that themes are treated with less importance and reverence by producers though, thus potentially making the themes being written seem less recognisable.
For instance, I think Fantastic Beasts has amazing themes and to me it doesn’t matter if my neighbour or some random person can hum it or not. A great theme is a great theme and I think this article is really trying to tell a certain story in a quite biased way.
However, this doesn’t negate the point that many directors today want less overtly recognisable themes but the way it’s discussed in this article misses the point and is not great in my opinion.

Mr. Who reacted to Knight of Ren in Ramin Djawadi: House Of The Dragon (2022)
It's time to choose a side! Before the season premiere, I created this two suites representing each of the sides of the conflict, one for the Blacks containing mostly Rhaenyra's themes, and one for the Greens made out of the Alicent and House Hightower theme. Also planning on upload tomorrow a small video analysis of all the main themes from the first season, as a preparation for the new one coming up in just a couple of days!
Which one's your favorite?

Mr. Who got a reaction from bruce marshall in Official Patrick Doyle Thread
This is really disappointing. I was really looking forward to this score, I love Doyle’s work on Orient Express and Nile. I think it’s safe to say that Hildur probably won’t write a similar score… they seem to be leaning into the horror angle quite a bit with the poster so maybe that explains the composer change.

I've been listening to TWO recap podcasts for this show (well, one recap podcast and one talking about book to show difference for each episode without spoiling beyond the first season) and am SO HYPED for season 2. I'm actually super tempted to re-watch season 1 before it starts and write about each episode, but who knows if I'll actually have time for that.

Mr. Who got a reaction from Yavar Moradi in GAME OF THRONES
I don’t think he is referring to GOT here. He’s more talking in general terms and while I think a good adaptation often requires changes to be made, it is a big problem these days that adaptations change things just for the sake of it.
In GOT for instance, the Meereen scene in Daznak’s pit in S5E9 I think is an incredible adaptation change which makes the scene better for the television medium. The book scene is incredible in the book but for TV they elevated it a lot by making said changes (locusts vs harpies). LOTR is another great example of a good adaptation and there are more changes made to the material than many believe.
