MikeH got a reaction from Loert in John Williams Composer Fee? How much per film?
Pretty sure copying refers to the copyists/music prep (preparing the sheet music for the sessions). MIDI files transfer would be getting JNH’s demo midi files cleaned up and ready for Jeff Atmajian to do his orchestrations.

Orchestrating from MIDI files is a headache. It’s an incredible amount of work to go from a computer demo to sheet music that is actually playable by musicians. Orchestrators sometimes deal with hundreds of tracks in these midi files, often sloppily thrown together, and they basically have to sort out what is needed and what is not. Composers who want to impress the studio heads will just add more and more tracks to make a great demo, but when it comes to translating that to an orchestra it’s a lot of work.

JW has his short sketch score which, in comparison, is relatively simple to orchestrate out to full score for the copyists.

Nevermind, JWFan itself has a high-res version:

This would look amazing converted into a vinyl cover.

A bit surprised Varese haven't explored a vinyl reissue of this release yet. Would be perfect for Halloween!

Hey, look. I get it. You wanna be contrary.

But for those of us who want to support music archiving… and future proofing of these assets… these releases are important.

For one, its Mike. He knows what he’s doing.

For two, the original is out of print and I don’t know many people who wanna spend close to $300 online for it.

Then there’s the fact it finally includes the only real missing performance from the old set AND the corrected film mix of another.

Add to it the fact that the 20th Anniversary set many people do have is deeply flawed. This corrects that too.

It’s ok to not want it but it’s ok for others to want it. It’s at least not whole sale deception like some other labels do or including poorly done editing / mastering…. I’d be one of the first to say it if so.

You should also know as well as I do that these separate re-releases are usually how they go about EXPANDING things (superman anyone?) and seeing as there are 5 other film scores that could be released… I think it would be ignorant to think this will be just a one off thing.

So in the end I WELCOME this and hope that we continue to get more of the music from the series!

MikeH reacted to TownerFan in RIP Flutist Sheridon Stokes (JW’s principal flute for 20+ years)
For Williams, Sheridon played 1st flute from the early 1970s until the late 1980s (Louise Di Tullio became principal in 1989 on Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade), so he was there for most the big ones recorded in LA during that era

Sheridon was highlighted by JW on The Towering Inferno:

On Jaws (this is probably my favourite moment):

Some of his most stirring solos for JW are for E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial OST album arrangements:

But the biggest one he got was the unaccompained cadenza on "The Seduction of Sukie" in The Witches of Eastwick:

Sheridon played for virtually all the greats, including Max Steiner and Alfred Newman. He got many solos when working for Lalo Schifrin, including the world-famous solo for the Mission: Impossible TV show:

He was also prominently featured on Schifrin's score for The Fox:

He was truly a formidable musician, revered and beloved by the whole community. He was notoriously famous for his unassuming attitude even when playing the most challenging part. Some musicians said that he rarely uncrossed his legs while playing . In 2019, he was celebrated by his peers for a special event at Zipper Hall in Los Angeles, where he also performed several pieces. Robert Townson did a lovely pre-concert talk featuring all the greatest Hollywood flute players (Louise Di Tullio, Jim Walker, Geri Rotella, Paul Fried, David Shostac) celebrating Sheridon and his musicianship:

I think Avatar 2 will succeed for the same kinds of reasons Top Gun Maverick is succeeding in theaters now—it’s a refreshingly different adventure experience from the MCU and its ilk, and it’s something people will say needs to be experienced in theaters. Word-of-mouth is going to drive asses into IMAX seats this December and beyond, just like it did for the first one.

Will it top the all-time box office? Who knows? TGM wasn’t supposed to do its level of business, yet look at its legs. Plus, Cameron has experience making sequels widely considered to be superior in every way to their predecessors (i.e., T2:JD).

Avatar 2 is going to earn boatloads of money and to that I say, good. Let it join TGM in proving the studios can make money from IP that isn’t built around superheroes or comic books.

I simply view it as more people who get into buying them (even if it's only JW) the more releases we get from him and other composers, and faster, from these labels.

    However naive it may be.

But in 2008 I could careless about any of this.  And now here I am.  We should hope for more fans of these scores.

Because weren't you one of the first to complain (whether it was a poorly executed joke post or not) about the label leaving previous buyers in the dust by releasing a more refined product after a supposedly definitive set? The potentially unintended implication being that LLL should not have bothered with a re-release if it meant possibly leaving some to double dip in case there's some fixes here and there?

It may be a bit of an obvious statement, but given the amount of complaining this thread has had so far, you don't get to cry foul if the opposite viewpoint gets to also have a spotlight too. There's no other word for it: it just reeks of elitism to me if a good few can cry about the alleged faults of a company/set they hadn't even fully heard the details from then, yet get very pissy when we remind them that this community isn't strictly 5,000 people.

And get out of here with mentioning political correctness, as if to imply being happy for others is some sign of weakness. You've already seen quite a few here (including myself) mention not having been able to grab the previous set for whatever reason. So am I supposed to be silent or maybe even act malicious instead for those finally being able to own a piece of art? It's a community, for Christ sake. What good is a forum to exist if little comradery actually takes place within it?

"A fan base of self obsessed OCD soundtrack nerds" is just a basic descriptor, and to insist that's all there is is a very reductionist viewpoint.

I think the labels should constantly be seeking to improve releases.  It’s up to me to decide whether it’s worth my money or not (which is why I did not repurchase Star Trek: TMP but did repurchase Jurassic Park), but it’s certainly not an affront that an improved edition exists.

The 2016 box set was only in print for 18 months before it sold out in June of 2018.

    The options are

    1) Leave it out of print forever, never reissue the scores in any format

    2) Reissue the box as-is

    3) Reissue the scores separately, in identical presentations as were made in 2016

    4) Reissue the scores separately, and take the time to re-examine what's available and see if anything more could be added

How is #4 the worst option for you?

Would you rather the film versions of Journey To The Island the Dennis Steals The Embryo sit in a vault unreleased forever instead?

Was it a money grab to revisit Fiddler On The Roof, Star Wars, Close Encounters, The Fury, Superman, Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, ET, Return of the Jedi, Home Alone, and Home Alone 2 after they had each been expanded once?

Yes, it's a courtesy.  He has no legal ownership of it.  Composers generally do not own their music, studios do.  In low budget or indie, there are more exceptions to this because copyright ownership can allow for additional payment.  He would get paid a "writer's share" if they use his material, but it gets complex.  For example, if in sixty seconds, they use 10 seconds of JW's material, he gets a small cut of 50% of payment for that cue (and all of this has exceptions).  This is basically the studio and producers say they revere JW's contribution to such an extent, that he is so much a part of the DNA of the films, his input is valued.  No one has to adhere to it or have an obligation to ask him, it's a courtesy.  If he said, "I really hate the way my material was used", they could ignore his feedback and that would just make it all the harder to secure his involvement in other projects.

Gordy Haab mentioned in his contract on Star Wars games, where he does a fantastic job conjuring the aura of the JW prequel sound, he said each cue he composed had a period of approval by three groups: Disney, the game producers, and JW.  JW probably didn't hear much of it, but was allowed an opportunity to weigh in.  Gordy said he only heard comment on one or two cues and the feedback was general in terms of creative choices made such as "I wouldn't have done that there" and Gordy complied.  These weren't major issues, just minor stylistic tweaks to make it feel more authentic.  Disney, the producers, or Gordy could have said no, I'm sticking with my instinct which could have been career limiting if in future projects, JW indicates disappointment in the musical approach.  Also keep in mind almost universally, JW is revered by musicians and composers especially those a generation or so after him who grew up with his sounds in our heads.  Hearing feedback is a bit like hearing the voice of god.  There really aren't any parallels.

I purposely haven’t been engaging with the forum for a little while, but I really do feel that this sentiment bears repeating, even though others have already put it much better than I can. As someone who only really started digging into film scores not but a few years ago, at a time when a lot of the sets I would now be interested in purchasing had already sold out, I find myself extremely grateful for the hard-working folks at La La Land Records (and all the specialty labels in general) who continue to make reissues like this possible. This will no doubt be a superb release of an all-timer score that should ideally and unequivocally be available for anyone to purchase at anytime. The same was the case with A.I., which became a favourite of mine thanks to the availability of a new edition. All told, I’m extremely glad it’s become possible to purchase this score presentation again, and I look forward to picking it up very soon. Cheers to all and stay well!
