Recommended Posts

What is your favorite movie?

What is the best movie?

One film each, or they can be the same one.

Please be decisive.

Star Wars...no E.T......no King Kong (1933)....uh Ben Hur.....maybe North By Northwest....no it's Gojira (1954).... ahh Close Encounters...no Jaws.....

To be honest I've seen too many movies to make a choice.

It's always so tough to reduce it to 10, 5, 1.

Favorite?

Perhaps Rio Bravo.

obs00101.gifI've always loved Westerns, and this one must be one of the reasons. It's one of those movies I watched over and over as a kid, and can see again now, always with the same immense pleasure. Since I have much less free time now, and I want to be sure to fully savor it, I usually try and watch it on my birthday; the ideal conditions to watch a Western are on a balmy Summer night; since I was born in late June, I often get close enough to ideal conditions.

obs00120.gifEverything about it is great; the situation; the characters; the humor; the suspense & action; the splendid leading lady; the actors; the music. I love it. obs00107.gif

The single best movie?

I don't know; I can think of several contenders, but it's hard to choose.

This is almost impossible to solidify one or two options, but for the purposes of this thread, I'll say...

Favorite: Fargo

Best: The Shawshank Redemption

Favorite?

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. I've seen it a million times and have yet to discover anything I don't like.

Best?

It's pretty damn hard to top The Shawshank Redemption.

Really? Not even the God awful green screen shots?

The Third Man. Stylistically, it is simply unmatched. As for story itself, so much depth, so many layers. One can analyze it endlessly and continue discovering its complexities. There are many others that belong on my favorites and best lists, as I have no definitive favorite and no best, but I feel this is definitely among them.

The Shawshank Redemption.

Great acting, great score, great movie.

I heartily agree. There was tough choice between Shawshank Redemption and Schindler's List.

How exactly do you define "best"? Is it the most critically acclaimed film, or the one you feel most pressured into appreciating? If "best" isn't equal to "favorite," then you're not being honest with yourself.

I acknowledge that something like Schindler's List is a superb film, but I'm not gonna say, "Hmm, tonight I'm in the mood for something I'll really enjoy . . . HOW ABOUT SCHINDLER'S LIST!"

That's how I distinguish favorite from best.

really,

not even the forced humor,

or the daring ripoff of Raiders greatest sequence,

or the cheap destruction of the Indiana Jones mythos

or the dumbing down of the character of Marcus Brody,

or the idioctic situation that young indy finds himself in, and his inability to tell his father, all in the name of humor,

or the buffoonery of the keystone nazi's

or the lack of a worthy villian.
