According to this page, Sony and MGM have announced who will direct the next James Bond film.

Marc Forster, director of Monster's Ball, Finding Neverland and Stranger Than Fiction (among others) will helm the currently untitled successor to Casino Royale.

Interesting choice, eh?

Very interesting. His work has been all over the place for me (loved one, liked one, didn't like one, hated one)....but I think he could be very good. His last movie was one of my favorite films of last year.

Can he handle making an Action film though?

Say what you will about Campbell, but the man can direct action scenes.

Action was not the main strength of the last film, it was character. And Forster can do that. Although the African action scene was one of the best action sequences I've ever seen.

That really is not that important.

Michael Apted had little to no experience with action scenes before he directed TWINE. The Bond franchise has a whole host of experienced second unit directers, assistant directors, stunt coordinators etc...etc...who take care of such things.

....and I don't think he did a very good job.

It's time for the Bond series to not focus on overdone action. Casino Royale was the most refreshing film since The Living Daylights.

Indeed...is TLD finally getting the praise it deserved?

The Living Daylights was a ridicules film that was not terribly entertaining. I don't understand how people like Robert Davi in that, or two of the worst Bond girls.

I thought Robert Davi's performance was VERY forgettable in that film. :o

Robert Davi was the villain in Licence to Kill, not The Living Daylights.

Oh, right. I got mixed up between the two. Neither is particularly good, but the Living Daylights is the more entertaining of the two (mainly because of Jeroen Krabbé).

The Living Daylights has unimpressive villains, but overall I enjoy it a lot. Licence to Kill I disliked at first, but it really grew on me after a while.

I think you have rarely phrazed an insult quite so perfectly. You timing in that...priceless. I'm happy to bring that out in you.

Morlock- who thinks that is a perfectly delivered post

That's a compliment, coming from someone used to being insulted by the great Alexcremers.

Anyway....

Marc Foster was born in Germany, so that means that after Rolls Royce und Bentley, the Germans will take ein other institution from ze Tommies!

I always considered the Dalton films two of the best entries in the series. At least they outdo Roger Moore's films (except for TSWLM and maybe FYEO) by a great length.

If TWINE's action scenes aren't that good, I certainly never noticed, because they are all amazingly well-scored.

I guess if that's the kind of music you like than fine, but music doesn't make-up for lackluster direction. Either way, I feel that the action scenes (sans the pre-titles) are just bland but I actually prefer that to the outrageous scenes in DAD or the endless sequences in TND. TWINE had the right ideas, just poor execution. I'm sure that EON wouldn't make the same mistake again.

And if Forster can direct the rest of the movie fabulously, then I can deal with uninteresting action, not that I think there needs to be any more action in this film than in Casino Royale.

I want Muse to do the title song.

Aye, or Robbie Williams

For the 2d time today I concur. Its one of my least favorite Bond movies.

Burga - who for some reason cant stand Maryam D'Arbo

I largely agree. I liked the opening dumb hovercraft chase in DAD and the Backseat Driver in TND more than anything in TWINE. I may be forgetting something...but the climax is a long, boring fight. The opening starts off great, but once it gets into the boat chase, it lost me. The ski chase? boring. Nothing I haven't seen before.

Morlock- still amazed by how good the African rundown in CR is

I want Rufus Wainwright to do the title song :)

Robbie Williams would be an interesting choice, too (still enjoying "MAn for all seasons" from Johnny English).

I'd also love Wainwright to do the song...not Robbie Williams though.

I am glad that they took the director who knows how to work with the actors, but on the other hand I would not like to have 2nd unit director to take all the responsibility for the action scenes. I like when a director can impose his own creative vision to the whole movie, not only to the dialogues. Either way, my main concern is the scrpit. What bothered me in TWINE were not the action scenes, but terribly weak Christmas Jones plot, strikingly flat compared to the main Bond-Elektra (which I found intersting and somehow refreshing in terms of the whole series). It wouldn't have been that bad if it hadn't been Dennise Richards - very hot, but equally unconvincing, especially as a nuclear scientist.

This is an inspired choice for director. THe next film should be amazing if they keep going with the tone from Casino Royale. I can't wait for the Arnold score!

It'll never happen, but I think Roman Polanski would make an excellent Bond movie given the chance, and the creative freedom to make it his way. There's no doubt it would be dark, brooding, and definitely focus more on the espionage than the action. I'd love to see that, but it's probably far too unlikely that A he would be considered, and B he would accept.

He would definitely make an interesting spy movie, but not very entertaining Bond flick, I am afraid. His less serious works ("Pirates", "Frantic", "9th Gate" and even "Oliver Twist") weren't smash hits - the first one was a terrible failure at the box office. They are too old fashioned for the modern popcorn audience. I am not even sure if he would know how to pull off a thrilling action sequence (and given 'the creative freedom', he wouldn't probably be eager to share his directorial duties with second unit).

I think Quentin Tarantino could make a great Bond movie if... he was bereaved of some of his creative freedom ;) Unfortunatelly, this will never happen, either

"Quantum of Solace"

....is the title of the next Bond film.....

I like it - it keeps in with the idea of "back to basics" for the franchise and should win some applause from the old Bond school.....

Your thoughts?

The what of what?

Quantum of Solace is one of the five Ian Fleming short stories that make up the collection For Your Eyes Only. It's not really like any of the other Bond stories, and I suspect the film won't be following it very closely, if at all.

IMO, pretentious sounding title.

But I do like the sound of this:

But co-producer Michael Wilson said the name had only been decided "a few days ago", adding the story's start point would be "literally an hour after the last film left off".

How can it be pretentious when it....actually....is a genuine Bond title?? As in - invented by that Fleming Chap?

What- Fleming can't be pretentious?

Wasn't this one supposed to be an original story?
