Unfortunately it is the same sorry situation here in Helsinki as well. I can't think of a single store that would carry the latest scores or actually other current CDs for that matter. No major store chain has a proper CD section anymore. And smaller stores specialize in something more lucrative than soundtracks, like the latest croonings of the current pop stars. How silly is that?!! I opt for the short wait for the CD ordered from abroad to get my physical copy.

Jilal 569
I'm about halfway through the OST programme. This score has some very lovely, oft jolly writing to offer, and of course, the orchestration is very colorful throughout. I can't help yearning for a bit more diversity in style and texture, however (which I hope is about to come). At the moment, the score comes across as being a tad too whimsical for my taste. Also, the thematic material feels less warm than I expected, and certainly isn't as charming as that of HPSS, in my opinion. As mentioned before, I'm only halfway through, so my opinion is bound to change. Will

Jilal 569
Listening to the Finale now. I'm surprised by the apparent lack of thematic development in this score as presented here, and the lack of tracks with a unique, individual nature, apart from Frolic and the lovely cues involving the queen. I'm afraid the album drops some interesting non-thematic material. Overall this has been a very enjoyable album presentation, though. Easily 4/5. The Psycho Pianist 216
The realisation dawned upon me as I heard the first few bars of "Overture" of how lucky we are to hear a new Williams/Spielberg collaboration, one that will probably never again be bettered in terms of the popularity and skill of both director and composer. Jay 37,441
Just finished my first listen. Overall, I wasn't terribly impressed - but then again, I wasn't by my first listen to the TFA OST either, and I grew to love that score. It's all very light and breezy, no deep emotional tugging cues like on a War Horse or even TFA Some thoughts on specific tracks Overture - How awesome is it to get this? It seems rare lately to get JW logo/title music The Witching Hour - Very early into the track I thought "I betcha this will be a favorite track of mine when all is said and done", and I was right! I loved this. BTW, the way the track ends so suddenly, I have to assume its meant to segue directly into the next cue - whether or not that's the next music on the OST or not, I don't know Dream Country - I think we were a bit misguided to get so excited about a 10 minute JW track. Its not really an epic track that builds on one idea for a long time, more like a bunch of smaller ideas one after another Fleshlumpeater - A lowpoint of the OST, just kinda too silly Frolic - Super fun! Meeting The Queen - Wow, wasn't expecting militaristic music! Giants Netted - Like a weird mashup of No Ticket, GIlderoy Lockheart, and Tintin's main theme. Actually really fun though. I could see him turning this into a fun concert piece! Finale - Actually really nice. But, it never felt like I was at the end of things before I got here; Giants Netted hardly sounds like the climax of a 2 hour fantasy movie. So this track while nice doesn't have anything grandiose about it. It's clearly the final music in the film though Sophie and the BFG - Wow, it opens exactly like Overture, then continues to be VERY reminiscent of earlier cues. I wonder if this is all a pure new recording or partially of fully a cut and paste job? Will
Will 2,215
I let myself listen to "Overture," which was terrific, but that's it. artguy360 1,844
Overall the thematic material is very simple and undeveloped. There isn't really a drawn-out "finale action set piece" in the book. Book spoilers: Spoiler After the meal at the queen's palace, military helicopters are sent to catch the giants. This happens pretty quickly without much of a fight. The giants are taken to London where they are dumped in a giant pit and fed only snozzcumbers. Sophie and the BFG get nice houses built for them, and everyone lives happily ever after. The end. That's it. I could definitely see how that giant-catching moment could fit only into "Giants Netted." Obviously they could have changed it for the movie, though. I guess we'll see. crumbs 14,355
Tintin had a pretty bizarre and short "climax" too. The real final setpiece was probably the Pursuit of the Falcon, because the Crane Fight was weak (and a pretty haphazard, disjointed cue to boot). JacksonElmore 69
Just saw the movie. The first two acts were actually very decent in my opinion, but the entire ending was awful. Musically, i thought it was great. I went in with low expectations, expecting a few themes but nothing huge. Sophie's theme (the one heard in overture) was played the most, and although it wasn't given the big soaring climax i was expecting, it was always nice to hear. The giants have a theme that is pretty funny imo, in the same way that haddocks theme from tintin was. The giant country cues were awesome, and it was nice to hear them repeated in the end credits. Overall I was pleasantly surprised, and i would say that to appreciate score you should definitely see it in the film first. Will
Popular Post Jay 37,441
I just got done seeing the film and @king mark Is completely wrong. There's barely any unreleased music, maybe some short cues in between the longer pieces on the OST and that's it. There's lots of scenes with no score and a very lengthly scene "scored" with existing classical music and bagpipe music. Giants Netted and Finale are absolutely the final two pieces of music in the film before the end credits with nothing missing in between them. Giants Netted is NOT the climax of the film; both cues are denouement tracks wrapping things up after the climax. The "action climax" (if you can call it that, it's like 30 seconds long), I'm not sure if it's on the OST or not but if it is, it's combined with another cue under a different name. The OST is not in chronological order but I think easy to figure out. Overture is a total misnomer; it's nothing more than the first chunk of the end credits, repeated as it's own track, like what he did on the JP and Minority Report OSTs. I think he does this because Spielberg never starts his movies with proper main title sequences. So like for Hook, he used the trailer music to open the album. For Minority Report and BFG, an End Credits edit. For AI, he picked a cue from the third act of the film to open the album. For KOCS, three concert arrangments. Etc. Anyway it's definitely a repeat of the End Credits track and not like an unused main title cue or anything. The film opens with the Disney logo, with its own music, then the Ambling logo with its own music, then another logo with music. Then no music at all for a few quick titles and the title card for the film, then after a little bit The Witching Hour begins (and that leads directly into To Giant Country just as I suspected). No chance Overture was meant to cover the short opening, its just an end credits edit to make the start of the album interesting. As for the end credits, I think it was the same as CD version, and I'm pretty sure it's all new recording and not cut and paste job but I dunno. It's a nice suite regardless. The main theme I thought was a Sophie/BFG friendship theme at first, but mostly its just used as a personal theme for Sophie. Then there's a theme for Giant Country (almost always played when characters are going there), a theme for the bad giants, a noble theme for the queen of England, and maybe one other theme. The dancing flute parts are for dreams flying around the screen. It was a boring and silly film but the score fits it like a glove - I don't mean the score is boring and silly at all, I mean it enhances the film and perfectly conveys the emotions Spielberg wants at all times (which is never anything serious, it's a super light film). Its a very Spielbergy score, it's really exactly how you'd expect it to be scored at all times, with no surprises. I'll try to post chronological order when I get home.
