Marian Schedenig 8,240
Yes? Some of the cinematography in The Shining reminded me of what Wes Anderson would, decades later, make his signature style.
Naïve Old Fart 9,698
Wes Anderson reminds you of Stanley Kubrick. It's not the other way around. Wes Anderson is not even fit to worship at the altar of Stanley Kubrick.
Marian Schedenig 8,240
I watched The Shining and thought of Wes Anderson. Ergo Kubrick reminded me of Anderson.

Marian Schedenig 8,240
I wouldn't normally say that Kubrick reminds of Anderson, generally. But yesterday's viewing of Shining did. Two different things. Naïve Old Fart

Plenty of Spielberg-type staring at things before they're shown shots in Shining, too. Obviously many good directors are Kubrick fans. More interesting for me was reading that Kubrick was a big Eraserhead fan and that it was an influence for him when he did Shining. I really should catch up and watch that. When the music rises and is suddenly interrupted, everybody laughed in the cinema. You really feel, everyone involved in making this, the costume designers, the set designers, the camera man, the lighters, John Williams, everyone tried so hard and gave the best they could to make that the romance it was supposed to be. But they are all doomed by script, acting and direction. Tallguy and Edmilson

It would be easy to say let's skip the dolly setup for this shot, nobody will notice it anyway. And it's so quick that I wasn't sure I'd seen it right until I looked it up on YouTube afterwards. Yet it makes all the difference - it transforms what would be a very static shot into something dramatic, even though it's just the bokeh background that does anything. By all measures I can think of it was an amazing film and a worthy sequel to Blade Runner. But it just didn't stick with me. Very weird. It is by no accounts a bad movie. I also don't like Jared Leto in it (or anything). it's a bit confusing because, for all the attempts in cyberpunk to borrow from noir (which Blade Runner didn't invent), it's an outdated genre and it feels off from the start most of the time.
