Popular Post #SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 10,265
Controversy aside, this was a highly influential film, in many ways. As for us specifically, it gave us the first "new" Star Wars score in well over a decade. It was also the reason @Ricard decided to start a website about the music for this film, which eventually became JWfan. I can't say Iove the film, its boring. I can't help feel grateful towards it, in some way. Happy birthday The Phantom Menace! Fabulin, Holko, Ricard and 5 others

Popular Post Bayesian 1,366
I remember the hype leading up to its release in theaters. News coverage was endless, it seemed. People lining up for days, weeks on the sidewalk.. expectations that it would beat all box office records (which it mostly did, for awhile). And when it actually opened, stories of people watching it and then making a beeline for the next showing.. and then doing it again. I remember not being more possibly excited and eager for a movie to come out. The previous November, I bought a full-price ticket to Meet Joe Black just so I could watch the first trailer (word was that MJB was the first film to have that trailer)... and then I walked right out of the theater after the trailer ran. Because I read that was what people were doing to be able to get a first glimpse and no one cared about MJB. So silly now to think back and remember I did things like that. I remember buying the soundtrack a couple weeks or so before the film hit theaters... and gazing at the package art and marveling at the cd in the image of some unknown planet. And listening to it all afternoon. I knew it was a momentous thing because the talk was about JW coming back around to bring SW music to a new generation and how special that was, but interestingly my obsession with JW’s œuvre had not actually started at that point. I knew JW was a big deal and an important composer, but it would be several more years before I really clicked permanently with his music. In fact, I remember being bored by parts of the soundtrack — even right after the opening crawl when it goes mysterious for the Naboo entry scene. I was indifferent to anakin’s theme and basically any slow-ish or quiet parts. But I was obsessed with DotF, the flag parade music, and the droid army march. Couldn’t stop playing those. (It’s obvious to me looking back that my passion for JW began in his rhythmic, brassy, catchy melodies and harmonies and it was much later that I came to appreciate his genius in all the music he wrote that wasn’t outwardly fitting that bill.) Anyhow, I also remember my friends chuckling at the lame dialogue during movie, and me defending it like I was one of the Ep. I producers or something. Because I was waiting so long, so eagerly for this movie, I was loath to hear any criticism of it that would devalue all the time I spent obsessing over it. But I also remember, very clearly, the vague feelings of disappointment in the pacing and dialogue and acting.. and my best efforts to quash them. I ended up seeing that movie in theaters 4 times (the last two times by myself, once my more sensible friends had moved on to other, better preoccupations.) It’s hard to believe that was all 20 years ago. Chewy, mstrox, The Illustrious Jerry and 2 others

Fancyarcher 350
I saw it in the cinemas a kid, and I distinctly remember everyone I knew as well as the general public, being wowed by it when it first came out, especially due to the hype. The music played a big part in that too, as soon as the classic fanfare started and the title screen appeared, there was an uproarious response from the audience that I haven't seen in a theater before or after. It wasn't until years later and everything had cooled off, did we notice the clear flaws the film had. I do appreciate The Phantom Menace a bit, especially for being the only one of the prequels to use a lot of practicals. It also reminds me of a more innocent time, and it along with the original trilogy played a large part in me developing my love for film music. I wanted to get the soundtrack of the film, but was disappointed when I couldn't find it anywhere at the time. Arpy

Gruesome Son of a Bitch 6,488
I was looking for a kind of swordfighting that was reminiscent of what was in the movies we'd already done, but a more energized version of it, because we'd actually never seen real Jedis at work. We'd only seen crippled half/droid, half/men and young boys who'd learned from these old people.

mrbellamy 6,317
I must have seen it in theaters since I was about 10 but really have no memory of going or it making any impression on me. We owned the DVD but I rarely put the movie on. I did get obsessed with the making-of doc at some point, long before Plinkett made it a meme. I have some nostalgia for that, even though I don’t know the movie itself well at all. I rewatched the film with fresh eyes before Force Awakens came out. It’s whatever, George is alright in my book. The score rules obviously and it’s cool that the history of JWFan begins with it so happy bday Unlucky Bastard

Chen G. 3,975
Saw it when I was really young (I believe Qui-Gon's death was the first live-action death scene I witnessed), and it remained the only Star Wars film I've seen until 2014. Although by the time I revisited it I could only recall very little of it: again, Qui-Gon's death, I remebered there was a boy named Skywalker, and that's about it. I think that, for an action-adventure film, it does action and adventure quite well, so I'm willing to forgive some its storytelling deficiencies. I don't think its the best prequel, but its hardly the worse.
Quintus 5,399
This is one that feels like twenty years ago to me, it feels like a long time ago in my life, when things were very different to how they are now.
