JNHFan2000 2,966
Powell shared on his Instagram that artwork & tracklist for Don't Worry Darling will be released this friday. I'm very curious what kind of score this will be. We know he did something with vocals but will it be more orchestral or more synths. I'm hoping it will be like a Golden Age orchestral thriller with some cool romantic pieces and weird vocal stuff.
Anthony 572
He posted a couple of clips a while back - the weird vocal stuff, and also some trippy string piece. Disco Stu 15,495
It's been 2.5 years since the last "proper" Powell score! I respect that he wanted to scale back his film work, but it's interesting to compare Powell in his late 50s to Williams in his late 50s, when the latter was leading the Boston Pops, writing concertos, and writing scores like Last Crusade, Always, Presumed Innocent, Home Alone, Hook, etc. (yes, obviously, covid is a mitigating circumstance here) Kasey Kockroach

WampaRat 1,105
Nice album length. And his albums from the past decade or so have always been structured really well from a musical narrative standpoint. A big climactic 8 minute cue near the end? I’m curious as to what that could sound like for an oddball film like this. I’m excited for a strange and wonderful new score from Powell!

Anthony 572
I'm not expcting this to a particularly "nice" album to listen to. I wonder how many typical Powell-isms will be within it. JNHFan2000 2,966
I've heard some people talk about the score. There isn't a lot of orchestra it seems and quite a lot of sound design (in a Powell way) with the (weird) vocals. I'm still really excited to hear this and explore it for what it is. I hope that for as weird as it sounds as though it's going to be, at very least is interesting to listen to. I hope it's not just weird and intolerable. PrayodiBA 517
Victory Chase is amazing! It's like Bourne and Solo combined into one. I miss this kind of sound of Powell, that's why I smiled all the way through when I first heard of this track Sadly, personally, I think that's the only real highlight of the soundtrack But hey, that kind of predicament is not something new from Powell's score, where only one track rises way above from the rest (like The Greateest Tragedy from Stop-Loss, and The End from United 93) This score relies heavily on texture and motif, there is no "main" theme (that's the disappointing thing for me) It's not really my cup of tea. That's my thought on first listen. I think that could change on second.

Jay 37,368
I just listened to the big 8 minute Victory Chase cue. I was not impressed, sadly. It was weird. Popular Post Anthony 572
Powell doing horror. Damn. This is interesting shit. So as we expected, this is nothing like anything he’s ever done before. It’s dark, uncomfortable, creepy, sometimes hypnotising. I do like some of the weird ideas (Breakfast Of Champignons, In The Bedroom, Keeping House, Long Relaxing Bath), but they’re all so short. This sort of works to their favour, as you can go “huh, that’s strange and original”, and then it moves onto the next track. Longer tracks like Welcome To The Party and Trolley To HQ aren’t really album material, but the vocals at the end of the latter are creepy as hell and quite interesting. Based on how it builds, I wonder if it accompanies one of the sex scenes? Nothing gives away that this is a Powell score until Advanced Ballet Class - it’s only some brief seconds of vocal work that may bring back memories of the Enfys Nest material from Solo - or at a real stretch, the mini-Sloths from Ice Age! In fact, if it wasn’t for the previous Enfys Nest material, virtually nothing gives away that this is John Powell. Even the percussion here isn’t his usual assortment. The occasional tracks have chord progressions that sound like him - Whose World Is It? and End Credits (those plucked bass notes) specifically. The second half of We Need To Go sounds like it would be at home in Green Zone - so it’s really a push to hear anything that sounds like his standard fare. I like that this is different, but it is not going to appeal to the typical Powell fan. I suspect the average person would hate it. It’s probably the most repelling thing he’s ever done, but I’m going to give it some credit for that. Assuming the goal of this was “be fucking weird”, mission accomplished. Am I going to listen to any of this frequently? No. Is any of this going to end up on my Powell playlist? Also no. I'd still put this above Fair Game - the dullest John Powell album there is - but there's nothing here I can really recommend. At least it's something different. Just don’t make this a habit. Keep doing what you do best, sir - more Bola Vivas, Dragon Racings, Third Dates, Corellia Chases and Buck Takes The Leads please! Edit: I should also have said that some elements may remind folks of Jumper - if anyone even remembers that. Anthony 572
I'll pass. For Powell, that's not a very interesting cue. Certainly doesn't justify 45 minutes of prior droning.
Jay 37,368
Just listened to the OST album. I liked it! If you put to the side any hopes or dreams you might have for a new John Powell score and just listen and receive it for what it is, it's a damn fine horror / thriller score with some interesting vocal and synth work. The album flows well and keeps your interest for its less than an hour run time. I dig it, though it won't be something I listen to all that frequently.
