The best and worst film that Williams has scored!

23 May 2013 - 03:17 PM

Ok, i got this idea from a similar thread at FSM about Goldsmith's worst film (not film score).

According to imdb ratings (see here at his composer credits list):

http://www.imdb.com/...02354/filmorate

Daddy-O is the worst film Williams has scored (with a rating of 2.30, followed by Heartbeeps with a rating of 4.25)

Schindler's List is the best (with a rating of 8.90, followed by Star Wars and Empire Strikes back with a rating of 8.80)

Just thought that it would be interesting to point out. :)

Early Williams (1960) - Journey to a Wedding (GE Theater episode)

20 May 2013 - 04:15 PM

Thanks to Jeff Eldridge at FSM (http://www.filmscore...93880&archive=0),

a General Electric Theater episode was confirmed (among 4) to have a Williams score.

I present you here the End Credits of the specific episode ("Journey to a Wedding - Season 9 Episode 7) which as Mr. Eldridge says "boasts a lovely melody".

(it reminds me of Heidi a bit)

If you were a film composer, in what genre you'd like to be typecasted?

20 May 2013 - 03:05 PM

This is something that has crossed my mind.

The ideal thing for a composer is not to be typecasted of course, but I see more and more in Hollywood, that that's the norm!

As a starting film composer, if I ever would be typecasted I'd like to be in the romantic period drama genre.

I feel it's the closest to my general style and character, and it's the music I'd love to compose most and that moves me the most.

What is yours?

Why certain BIG directors haven't worked with John Williams?

16 May 2013 - 02:23 PM

I was just wondering that..

Given that John Williams is considered the best film music composer of the last 40 or so years, why didn't they ever collaborate with him?

Is it because they didn't like his style, or just because circumstances didn't permit? (eg conflicting schedules, etc..)

or maybe John Williams didn't want to work with them ? (meaning that maybe there was a proposal that we don't know about and he kindly refused)

I'm talking about directors like Scorsese, Woody Allen, Ridley Scott, James Cameron, etc..

Favourite 80s synth scores

08 May 2013 - 11:54 PM

Well, although I love orchestral symphonic scores (and i think maybe many of us here), there are some 80s synth scores that hold a special place in my heart - maybe more due to the nostalgia about the films.

I had a discussion today and some people say that they don't like the dated 80s synth sound.

So, do you have any favourites?

(edit: I'm talking about scores which are 80-100% synth)

the ones I can think of now are:

-No Mercy (Alan Silvestri) (I especially loved this theme and played it over and over)

-Labyrinth (Trevor Jones)

-Terminator (Brad Fiedel)

-Blade Runner (Vangelis)

-Dead Poets Society (Maurice Jarre) (i think in the most part it's synth, isn't it?)
