No surprise this evening - Oppenheimer gets the Bafta for best score. (and other stuff)

But having listened to the full album a few times since my last comment on that score, I say well done to Goransson in advance for his oscar.

I'm listening to Oppenheimer for the first time, 100% concept album, and I'm enjoying it. It's very much an acoustic mood score - lots of use of a small ensemble but also synths and piano, but I tend to like that sort of thing anyway. Yes, there's some ostinatoing too, but it doesn't take over the entire score.

Is it as skilful, orchestrally, as Williams? No. Is it more original and generally doing some things I don't hear much? Yep.

I guess my point is... in the highly likely event that this wins, it's obviously because of the film, but I find it a decent, engaging score so I don't think it would be undeserving, exactly.

I think this is quite possibly the most boring idea they've announced yet. So it'll probably happen.

Hard to imagine back then that the site would still be up and running two and a half decades later, let alone that the Maestro would still be active after having composed nearly thirty more film scores and a similar number of concert works, as well as conducting over 200 concerts including Vienna, Berlin, Milan and Japan!

Dozens of his film scores have received perfect releases during all this time, providing fans with the confidence that many more will come in the future, while maintaining and further enhancing the collective appreciation and admiration for the music we all love and which will remain with us for the rest of our lives.

The analysis and discussion of his work has reached such level of comprehensiveness and detail, that our forums have become an essential reference for fans and scholars, while fomenting the creation of fascinating projects that expand and deepen the study of the Maestro’s oeuvre and contribute to increasing its appreciation by future generations who, without doubt, will continue to ensure that his name is in the place it deserves in the history of music and cinema.

Thank you, Mr. Williams, and thanks to all those who have contributed during this time to make the site such a wonderful place. Here’s to 25 more!

Oppenheimer doesn't work as the "awards scapegoat" because it's actually good.

The Deakins lighting in that scene is unbelievable. Newman's RVW pastiche is a perfect match for the visuals.

That is a very striking moment in the film too.  I saw the film in a theater and my jaw dropped during that sequence.  Really an excellent film and score.  Incredibly moving climax through a structurally flawless film.

I have to admit that I wasn’t prepared for how moving a live performance of 1917’s “The Night Window” would be.

Not Mr. Big reacted to karelm in New Interview with John Williams reflects on the beginnings of his career, a lifetime in music, and his love for orchestras.
Wow, that was a great interview with lots of new stories (his first performances) and many great quotes!  I loved these:

On Star Wars blast: "One thing I can tell you about it is the nature of the attack. It was originally preceded by a scale run-up to the top C in the trumpets, but I removed that, and the result was a chord that required a certain kind of attack from everybody in the top register without having followed some preparatory scale up to it. Maurice Murphy, the principal trumpet of the London Symphony Orchestra, who recorded the original soundtrack, was a great trumpeter. When he hit the top C, it shook the whole world. He just grabbed it without any preparation or pickup for a big sound. It’s like interrupting the swell of a rubato and attacking without any kind of precedent. It was a shock to hear Maurice play that so brilliantly, so in tune, so confidently, at the extreme altissimo end of the trumpet range. It had a resonance. That may explain it or it may not, I don’t know."

    and

"I can only put dots on a paper; it doesn’t become music until it’s interpreted by a great orchestra and has an audience to hear it. Then what’s written on the paper becomes music, becomes a communal act."

The primary difference would be John's score would be better written, and hence deserving of a nomination.

Really don't get why everyone expected Spider Verse a shoo-in to get a nomination.  It was clever but not even the fourth best Spider Man score.  Superhero avatars always tend to overinflate the quality of certain scores (The Batman last year).  The Oscar hopes for that movie in general were very forced (like when people expected No Way Home to get a best picture nom)
