At first (last summer), I thought given it is John Williams, he will get the nom. Then after the film flopped and there was no mention at the Golden Globes, I was sure he would not get a nomination. But actually, starting last week, I had an inkling that maybe he would.

The best they can do is acknowledge him with nominations and that's fine with me. It's pretty obvious he isn't winning another competitive Oscar; I think that final ship sailed with Fabelmans.

The cool thing is that, even at 91, he'll probably attend the cerimony as he always does, even knowing he's not going to win.

Correct. So really, the nomination is probably more meaningful because it's an acknowledgement from his peers.

Why is it cool? Except for seeing him wearing a tux again, losing again, for the 49th time, 30 years in a row. He should get a participation Oscar alone. The man is the living embodiment of optimism. “I’ve lost 29 times in a row, but 30th time’s the charm!”

Amazing how every Lucasfilm movie JW has scored since the Disney acquisition has received an Oscar nomination. They're getting a solid return on investment.

 

Would be nice if someone at Disney Records had the bright idea of monetizing all that free publicity with score expansions...

I'm seeing people more annoyed with Williams this year than usual  I do think there was a lot of hope Joe Hisaishi could have gotten his first which would have been great. I really, really thought this was gonna be a skip year but truly very little can get in the way of JW and his Original Score parking spot.

Of course he was always pencilled in but he'd been snubbed for both Crystal Skull and The BFG, that was my thinking. Dial of Destiny fit that mold.

I hate to see the negativity he is getting for being nominated though. Just imagine what people would say if he won. I think it's pretty dumb that people are mad that he has so many noms over the years. You don't just stop nominating someone because they already have a lot. He has so many because he's the GOAT and continues to be great!

I think it's also because it's the score for Dial of Destiny.  If it has been like TFA where the film and score are generally well received then there would be a lot less backlash.  DOD very much feels like an obligatory nomination.

I think the negativity is people being (a) honest, and (b) much more objective than JWFanners are.

 

Looking back, I personally think the idea of Fabelmans or DoD being considered the best score of the year is ludicrous, whereas him not receiving recognition for anything post 1993 is also ludicrous (for example, I think in 2001 he was unfortunate to be up against Shore). There's a balance that's being observed by most people, but not by people who think Williams is still at the top of his game... which in my humble view, he isn't, and I heavily suspect voters are about to demonstrate that.

 

He should have a lifetime achievement award in the bag for sure... but suggesting every year for the last decade that whatever he does is still automatically better than anyone else because he's Williams? Isn't that pretty much what a fanboy does?
