I’m not familiar with the LSO version. My guess would that it’s the exact same JW has performed last year, which I guess would be the same one the LSO played. Especially that JW was supposed to conduct that concert.

Williams conducted three albums for Previn. The first one, from 1962 on RCA Records, "Young Hollywood Composers", even has some Williams music. In 1963 and 64 came out "André Previn In Hollywood" and "Soundstage", both on CBS. The later one was re-released in the 70's under the title "The Jazz Piano of Andre Previn".
The CBS albums were released on the Vocalion label a few years ago though it seems they are out of print. Had no idea Sony had released "André Previn in Hollywood" on CD.

Nice interview. I actually really like what Powell has done. I really enjoy this score and have listened to it quite a bit. Probably more than TLJ actually...

Yes, it is. It was performed at the Royal Festival Hall with André Previn conducting. On Jeff Eldridge's website (johnwilliams.org) there used to be the short program introduction written by Williams himself (cannot find it anymore, tho), where he speaks a bit about some Webern-like passages in the first movement, while the second movement being inspired by the playing of jazz flutist Eric Dolphy.

The symphony is in three movements and lasts around 25 minutes, btw, as we discussed in the other thread.

We almost got a Hans Zimmer Star Wars score... I shutter at the thought of that. It probably would have been the first Star Wars score I'd have disliked.

I just got the CD yesterday and I thought it was just a wonderful performance but I have to give it several more listens before making any comparisons with the previous two recordings. Hooten is such a fine player whose range is really showcased on this album from the technically demanding concerto to the expansive Americana of Born on the Fourth of July which had such beatiful warmth to it.

It was interesting to note that Arturo Sandoval was among the major donors for this project. Nice to know of his appreciation for Hooten and Williams' concerto.

In the Born on the Fourth of July Williams seems to be deliberately giving it overall a slower reading with slightly less rhythmic edge than the Boston Pops version from early 1990's. Hooten's solos are beautiful and equally beautifully recorded. His sound and playing has such immediacy (Yo-Yo Ma comes to mind with similar striking connection to the listener through his instrument) that it just goes right through you and into your soul.

Kojian's.  The biggest selling points: The 20th Century-Fox Fanfare, plus what was then the unreleased material.  This and the OST albums (this was years before we had expansions of any kind) were so ingrained in my ears that hearing Williams own collective take of the trilogy years later was anticlimactic.  I felt the playing by the Skywalker Symphony was lackluster, uninspiring, and too slow.  It was almost as if Williams was tired of having to hear this Frankenstein's monster that he created with the Star Wars theme for the umpteenth time.  Then again, it might have been due to the SSO being a pickup group.  One of the comments I read when the album was released was that it didn't seem to have the kind of performance from an established orchestra.

So you like only blockbuster scores? 🙄

The non-blockbuster scores are the better ones in many cases...

We also gonna play Mahler's 4 soon, I never played that. The other symphonies by Mahler perhaps over 100 times😱😱😱

I prefer Williams. Mainly for the same reason I prefer Karajan's Ring der Nibelungen over (the bits I've heard of) the famed Solti recording: A measured interpretation that allows musical arcs to steadily build to a climax, vs (Kojian/Solti) going for constantly exciting punches at the expense of the impact of the actual climaxes.

Don't get me wrong, Kojian's album is a fine one. But between Gerhardt's recordings and the Skywalker Symphony album, I haven't yet found a SW compilation that can compete. For me, anything on Gerhardt's first SW album is the gold standard. For ROTJ, Gerhardt and Williams both have their strengths. And while I'm not a fan of Gerhardt's ESB, the Skywalker Symphony recording has the best Imperial March and Asteroid Field.

Williams also has the better engineered recording with a quite natural sound.

Kojian's Korngold albums are stronger contenders in their niche of the market for me, second only in quality perhaps to Gerhardt.

That's Andrew Bain on horn - a fantastic player (and a fellow Ozzie) and first horn on the sequel trilogy.  The first time the phrase is open and the second time the phrase is stopped (his hand is pushed further into the bell) stopping the overtones and you get a more nasily sound.  Agree, the strings are exquisite in the Adagio and is a very beautiful piece just hearing it without the movie.  Such gorgeous suspensions.
