It's all very intriguing. I'm really looking forward to everything Azkaban has to offer. Mostly because it will surely provide a completely different listening experience than the original OST.

I've been looking forward to this release for the better part of my life, and I honestly didn't expect it to happen until after 2024. So I'm not even impatient for the set to arrive, I'm just so happy it's happening.

Would we be better off without the new reinvigorated trilogy or with it. As much as they've pissed people off, there's more good that has come from it than not. More Williams for one, more of the things I love such as the characters, the world, the ships and lightsabers. I think the Skywalker saga has been made more wholesome and well rounded.

This moment from Phantom Menace always stuck out for me:

Aside from it being a genuine cool shot (imo), the little brass fanfare just gives it something. I seem to recall a similar thing in The Patriot too.

We all have our favourite scores and our favourite cues, but one of the best parts of Williams' scores is his detail to syncing with the picture itself. He regularly writes short, throwaway ideas that perfectly accompany a specific shot or handful of shots, as if something in the visuals specifically inspired him to write something out of the box.

I loved this short 10 seconds of score in The Last Jedi from the first viewing:

It's deceptively simple but incredibly clever. Williams repeats this three note fanfare but it never reaches climax. The first note is strained and dragged out, over dramatic shots of fast moving objects and panicked characters, yet the drama is focused squarely on this slow-moving bomber drifting towards its target (such excellent visual contrast).

Cleverly, these 3 notes appear to be the first 3 notes of the Resistance March. Perfect for a scene that depicts the Resistance at their most desperate hour, unable to 'complete' the theme given the uncertainty of the events unfolding. Combine that with the orchestra swelling on the third note with increasing drama, building towards that fantastic final shot (from the reverse of the bomber hovering over this enormous ship) and you just know Williams wanted to plant something very specific for this short segment of the sequence.

So what are your favourite short little moments like this, where Williams departs from the flow of a cue and just dives into a cool one-off idea?

Well, an awkward transition it is.  I'm using included-with-OS software so I just did the best I could.  Haven't figured out how to do good crossfading with iMovie.

Still, I hope some of you watch and enjoy.  It's a wonderful sequence and I don't think the edit detracts from the experience.  Anyway, up yer shaft if you're gonna complain!

I had to include the "Don't get smart, Tiny" line   It has such a great payoff with that harp glissando as Sulu flips the dude over!

If you were in Rian Johnson's position, how would you have had Williams score TLJ?

I really wouldn't make too many changes since I find the score extremely satisfying as a whole.  I may have asked for less statements of the Force theme and Leia's theme.  I also would have asked him to create a motif for DJ.  He had enough screen time to warrant one.  Also, maybe a motif for the moments for when Rey and Kylo connect to each other via the Force.  Oh, and an original end credits suite.

I listen to the OST album on Spotify all the time too.  Its an extremely well-constructed album!

But of course, I look forward to the day when we get a Matessino produced complete score with all those juicy alternates Williams wrote that JJ kept replacing!

On a related issue - the FYC Rogue One was for a short while available as mp3s at Disney. Now they're not. Anyone who'd like to share these with me? Just send a PM.
