Thor, the answer is simpler than you can imagine.

The film (especially the last two reels) was extensively re-edited and altered after Williams recorded the score, hence the music had to be conformed and re-edited accordingly by music editors and dubbing mixers. The Ultimate Edition presents the score exactly as heard in the final film, with many sour and sometimes unmusical edits.

The usual “c&c” presentation that specialty labels and soundtrack fans likes usually tends to preserve the score as the composer originally intended and recorded, avoiding replicating film edits made in post-production (like the Ultimate Edition did).

Seeing JW live is always a special experience and indeed very emotional. For me, it always felt like equally as if I was seeing Mozart or Verdi live. I’m very happy you and Marian managed to finally see him live! It’s indeed worth every penny.

The program looks a good mixture of uber-classics and less wore-out material. Very classy to dedicate a slot to the great Alfred Newman. I’m particularly curious about the Ryan and Jurassic Park segments performed live to film—were they actual sequences from the film, or just montage clip shows?

I think JW will continue to conduct at least portions of his concerts until his health will permit. It’s quite evident he enjoys it a lot and gets a lot of sincere joy out of it. It’s too much of a blast for any musician to be in front of a cheering audience while doing what you love the most.

It seems like a perfect balance between the standard concert and what you and David Newman discussed in one of your podcasts. As in that he prefers to perform music in context. I actually approve.

I am also happy that only the only three pieces that I've heard performed exactly in the sane form were the final three (including two encores). Everything else was either modified (shortened) or new to my ears. So that wad great.

It was really lovely. Seeing Williams speak and conduct his music was a wonderful thing. Made me feel quite emotional. He appeared at the very start of the evening to introduce the concert. It was quite obvious he's going to conduct the SW section (plus Yoda's Theme and The Imperial March encores) when David Newman mentioned there might be a "surprise" at the end.

    Other thoughts:

Absolutely loved The Cowboys and Jane Eyre segments.

Galaxy's Edge was good to hear but the piece itself doesn't convince me one bit.

It was nice to see three segments conducted to film. The E.T. was the opening sequence as indicated on the programme. SPR was the opening cue followed by the shortened Hymn to the Fallen and JP had the dinosaur reveal scene with chorus followed by the fanfare.

Amistad was played faster than usual. I really enjoyed it.

The Williams conducted segment: The Adventures of Han was played bit slower than the soundtrack recording. It's a really fun piece. Luke and Leia was the shortened version. After that, he spoke about having completed 100 minutes of the new score and having to go back to his "other job" the next day and write another 40 minutes due to film changes. And that it is a lot of music. He said he was assured by Disney this is  the "last film" and then added it will be the last one he does. Whether he was being serious is anybody's guess. Then he conducted the Main Title and the two encores. Again, it was a thrilling and emotional thing to witness.

I really enjoyed Tanglewood. I'm also glad me and Marian arrived early to wander about a bit. You can understand why he keeps coming back to this place - it's very relaxing. Quite a lot of people arrived later on so it lost its peaceful vibe to the big summer concert excitement.

I'm glad we decided to go, especially after what happened last year in London. While only small segment was conducted by Williams himself it was still more than worth all the money. You can tell he's quite old now especially when he walks but, oddly, that goes away as he starts to conduct. It's like doing that gives him new energy. It made me think of that Yoda duel scene in AOTC actually. 😄

Nothing completely unreleased. Perhaps some of his TV stuff. There are film scores that could be improved though, at least sound quality-wise (The Paper Chase, Conrack, The Towering Inferno)
