Miniseries about a young married Jewish woman trying to runaway from her community.  It's good but I was disappointed that it's only 4 episodes. 7/10

Archer (season 1)

Adult animated show that ridicules James Bond and its tropes, as well as old spy TV shows such as Mission: Impossible and Get Smart. Although supposedly being about a secret agent, it's actually a workplace sex comedy where all the characters are morons - and so much more funny for that.

They say the show gets weirder and weirder with the following seasons, so let's see.

I started with Ozark 3 last week but I wasn't in the mood for it.

The first 2 episodes are really slow and all set up, then it kicks into high gear after that

The early episodes show you Marty and Wendy running their new casino, and also attending couples therapy; an FBI audit is happening at the casino making it harder to launder money; Wyatt gets bailed out of jail by Darlene and starts working for her ; The cartel the Byrds work for is in a brutal war with a rival cartel; Helen moves to the Ozarks to keep an eye on the Byrds, and Wendy's brother shows up

True Detective Season 2: One more eppy to go. Easily the weakest season of the three. I never thought I would say this but Colin Farell is its only saving grace. Everything else is mediocre. Heck, Vince Vaughn feels like a villain from one of those Marvel/Netflix TV series.

Finished the first ep of The Outsider.

It was okay. I like those HBO minisseries about unsolved crimes, so let's see if this one is actually great.

You do know this is a Stephen King story

I enjoyed it. The acting was sublime especially by Mare Winningham

Saw Netflix's Summertime. I was kinda intrigued with the first episode but the episodes after delve into a cliched teen romance series. Alessandro and Summer are the only characters that matter, while too much time is devoted to B-plots like Summer's friends' relationships.

All episodes are stunningly shot. You can't go wrong with summertime on the Italian coast, but Federico Schlatter's lensing is sumptuous with plenty of contrast. One of the best digitally-shot series I've seen.

Still in my Star Trek Fest (AND NO IT'S NOT BETTER THAN STAR WARS).

Next week: Deep Space 9, which I never saw at all.

DS9: "The Way of the Warrior" (feature-length) Episode 4x01/02
DS9: "Little Green Men" 4x08
DS9: "The Sword of Kahless" Episode 4x09
DS9: "Trials and Tribble-ations" Episode 5x06

Star Trek DS9 - Revised theme song (season 4) Deep Space 9 ...

That's an odd way to see DS9 for the first time.

I just binged that on Friday and Saturday. I didn't know anything about it, but came across it on BBC iPlayer and remembered seeing it mentioned by you and elsewhere, then got hooked. Wonderfully written (dysfunctional characters that are nevertheless likable and relatable), very well performed, and well directed with some fine visuals. Oddly enough, Daisy Edgar-Jones looks a lot like Alicia Vikander to me, while I could swear that Paul Mescal must be Alfred Molina's son.

And then I continued my Doctor Who rewatch. Human Nature/The Family of Blood are first rate (and probably inspired by STTNG's The Inner Light?) and would easily be the best in series 3, if not for their immediate successor:

Blink. Still absolutely brilliant. Moffat at the top of his game, with several of his classic tricks put to best use (including some Couling quotes it seems) and a wit that made me laugh out loud even on my second viewing. It helps that Carey Mulligan's magnificent performance is a perfect match. And, by pure coincidence (re my watch list), the episode was directed by Hettie Macdonald, who directed the second half of Normal People.

Parks and Recreation special

They did a fantastic job with this

Just watched this today, and was looking forward to it because of all the high praise. But I thought it was bad. Trying to raise money for charity is great and all, but don’t shoehorn it into a revival special.  Could have just gotten the cast together for some real world talk instead of making the characters speak about the importance of social distancing and mental health.

Watching season 3 of the X Files right now. I love every time Mulder and Scully stay at those rinky dink motels. It makes them so sympathetic. People underestimate how real this show actually feels.

Some of that stuff was clumsy but it made me lol all the way through which is all I wanted.

Glad you enjoyed it! They’re showing the episodes in batches of two here so I’m going g to wait until they’re all out to binge it.

Two episodes of Hollywood on Netflix.

The actor who plays the main character could be the new Superman.

Marian, did you know that HUMAN NATURE/FAMILY OF BLOOD, was originally a novel, by Paul Cornell, featuring the seventh Doctor?

BLINK is top-drawer Moffatt, but, for me, the Weeping Angels are just plain boring. It's what goes on around them, that's so interesting.

Series...ahem...4...was a definite improvement on series...ahem...3.

Nothing beats the triple whammy of

TURN LEFT/STOLEN EARTH/

JOURNEY'S END.

I'm catching up with the IMDb trivia after every episode of my rewatch so yes, I knew. The book came out two years after The Inner Light, so the connection seems likely.

I like them, and the fact that Moffat managed to came up with a new, original monster, even if they're hard to handle consistently. And I found them scary in exactly the way Moffat intended (that children's game). The creepiness factor is pretty much the only aspect of Blink that's lost in the rewatch.

There's some wonderful stuff in S3, right from the first episode. I was surprised how good that one is in context, on rewatch, and Martha's introduction and the Doctor's behaviour are perfectly written and acted. I'm a big Martha fan anyway, and Tennant plays the melancholic Doctor who pretends to be happy to perfection.

Also, since The Impossible Planet, the scores are full of unreleased stuff I'd love to have on CD. There's easily material for a few more discs, if anyone ever cares to release more of it (but first please finally do Gold's final series).

There's a lot of unrealsed Gold music, on YouTube.

Series...ahem...4...is available as a 2-CD set, along with the specials.

Actually, S4 is a single disc release, and the specials have their own 2 CD set. From then on, it's been 2+ discs for each series. I'm not convinced the later ones need such long releases, but there's a wealth of cool stuff post S2. It's hard to judge from the episode itself how much music was tracked and reused, but I did get the distinct impression that The Runaway Bride would work just fine as a C&C. (It also has the most piratey music from Gold's entire run - more piratey than the actual pirate episode with the 11th Doctor).

Finished The US Office. One of the GOAT. Top five.

Anyone else watched Amazon streaming's Undone? For some reason they decided to rotoscope it, although this is a far cry from the crude rotoscoping last seen in Bakshi's Lord of the Rings from donkeys years ago. No, this is very striking, being a mix of naturalistic performance capture animation and wonderfully intricate hand drawn backgrounds which can be anything from mundane domestic scenery to otherworldly cosmic vistas, it's all done with the uttermost care (although the uncompromising script's still the best thing about the series).

I pressed play on the first epi on a whim the other night and ended up sitting through four of them; the existential crisis storyline very quickly drawing me in and the Lynchian sci-fi elements on top make for a great hook. That, and 22 min runtimes are just great for that sort of viewing pleasure. Definitely one to follow.

I watched the first half of episode one and it was so incredibly slow and none eventful that I fell asleep. It was late at night. I haven't returned to it because of how desolately shrugworthy it was at that early stage. I wonder if it suddenly and drastically improves in following episodes.

Have embarked on rewatches of The Prisoner and Life On Mars (the originals, I hasten to add) ... enjoying both. Hard to believe that ITV once countenanced something as wilfully odd as the former in their primetime schedule; in its way, I guess it blazed a trail for 'off-kilter' dramas like the latter.

Talk about a decent binge-opportunity... I've gone right back to the beginning of ER, a show I used to love as a kid. Enjoying it even more now.

One thing that I completely forgot about was this (episode 24 of the very first season):

You think Tarantino + ER?!!

Then you see shots like this...

Haven't seen it yet, but I will, and hopefully soon.

Just finished this over the weekend. It's as poignant and charming as ever. The new season eschews some of the more elaborate world-building of the first for a more personal dive into richer characters. Still some of the best, and easily most underrated stuff on television!
