crocodile 8,052
The Haunting. This is a really great late score from Goldsmith. I absolutely adore last year's DE album from Varese. It's very subtle and elegant music, not really your "jump scare" type of affair. Herrmann would be proud. Karol

Popular Post Incanus 5,725
Solo: A Star Wars Story by John Powell (and Maestro John Williams): Still as terrific as ever. Powell has slowly climbed to be among my favourite "newer" generation film composers who has a knack for combining the old school orchestral writing with more modern sensibilities with ease. While his action music can be quite hyperactive and percussive beat driven there is such genuine joy and excitement to his writing it is hard not to enjoy it. Solo is no exception to this and with Williams penned main theme and several other Powell written catchy thematic ideas this score to my ears updates the sound of a Star Wars soundtrack to the modern era in a very successful manner. I especially love the little nods to Williams' style and the classical forms the Maestro has been wont to use in his scores in and outside of Star Wars like the hummable fugue march in the Mine Mission which sounds like part Powell part Edward Elgar. Incanus 5,725
Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra by John Williams: The performance of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Jouko Harjanne as the soloist. I have not heard the interpretation of Thomas Hooten yet so this remains my favourite interpretation of this concerto. It is a concert composition that in typical Williams' style is both virtuosic and highly accessible and along with the tuba concerto perhaps the most accessible of all Williams' concerto output. Matt C 456
The Journey of Natty Gann - James Horner As much as I loved Horner in his big action mode like The Rocketeer and Krull, it's the smaller family drama scores that he excelled at like Natty Gann and Something Wicked This Way Comes. I really love this one, he had a good film to work with and it really shows in the final score. "Reunion -- End Title" just leaves me feeling warm and content. crocodile 8,052
An American Tail by Janes Horner. I decided to eliminate the songs from my playlist as they annoy me a little. That leaves an excellent 59-minute score programme and it's lovely stuff indeed. As I said before before, Horner might have fancied himself a great auteur dramatist but it's in those kid's films that his talent shines the brightest. Fantastic stuff. I haven't heard anything more overrated on this forum. Personally, I enjoy orchestration in service of music that moves in a certain direction, whether simple or woven like an Armenian carpet: Woe betide unignonrable noise that detracts from getting carried away. Giacchino's Star Trek main theme is a good example of something I can't bother considering "catchy," as catchy to me connotes an innately a positive (subjective) quality, and most of my favorite pieces tend to have this quality: albeit a marriage of good motif and orchestration, like what Williams offers. Giacchino's Star Trek theme on the other hand gets stuck in my head in a bad way, it is annoying, simplistic and superficial, (just as an example of something others might consider "catchy" or hum after the movie ends.) But then again, maybe I'm mincing terms of catchy.
