Quote Bill Payne's America theme is the only part of his music where I don't agree with you that it sounds like source. Whatever you call it, it's just self-contained pieces dropped all over the movie. And they work differently than straight dramatic score. A good compromise would have been to ask Goldsmith (not just on this movie) to limit himself to a smaller instrumental group, because whenever he gets in his Barry-ersatz mode with horns, strings etc. playing in perfect harmony, he sounds like a stereotype. 'Six Degrees of Separation' and 'Fierce Creatures' are positive examples of how much more fresh his chamber music is. 7 hours ago, Marian Schedenig said: Pot Luck all the way! Thor 7,515
Never seen the show, but I sometimes put on this soundtrack for when I need to calm down with some jazzy elegance. Useful now when I'm in a temporary apartment, and the neighbour is extremely noisy all the time. Can't drown out the noise, but works better than playing Rammstein to overpower it. Thor 7,515
One of my favourite scores of 2018 -- part weird, experimental textures, part goosebump-inducing, haunting religioso textures (love those choral bits, as always). Tallguy 3,401
OK. Gremlin's 2. 25th Anniversary edition. Gotta say, so far I'm digging it. I'm wondering if my dislike was because I didn't own Gremlins 1 at the time and there isn't a good rendition of the Gremlins Rag? Also I don't know how the original album holds together. Some terrific, tuneful orchestral writing. McNeely is definitely one of those criminally underused composers. Thor 7,515
Sophia Loren and Gabriel Yared were the two good things about this 2020 film (which otherwise leaned a bit too heavily on the Oscar bait-ish melodrama). Tracks that I used to know like I know my own house (Destruction of Krypton, Chasing Rockets) suddenly have unexpected and surprising (in a good way) edits. In opposite to other golden age scores it is not overloaded with heavy brass and screaming strings, but has clear thematic ideas arranged in a very classical manner. Eastern Promises - Howard Shore Like most of Shore's scores for Cronenberg IT IS highly melancholic. Sometimes it feels like Shore uses for Cronenberg every time almost the same score and just changes the lead Instrument. This time it is the violin. The score is influenced by russian folk music. Not very optimistic. But beautiful. 16 minutes ago, Naïve Old Fart said: QUANTUM OF SOLACE. Thor 7,515
Again, I'm struggling to find an online soundtrack cover, because I don't think Ólafur Arnalds' 2014 score was ever commercially released. But it's a nice, "softspoken" score built around repeating figures (primarily on piano). I hung out a bit with Arnalds in Cannes a few years ago -- he's one of the foremost Icelandic film composers. I mean, some people think, a good Bond score should include the title song a lot, which to my mind Casino Royale did in a quite smart way. Others think, it should include the Bond theme a lot and traces and variations of it in every theme. That's what basically A Quantum of Solace did. Others may think, to hell with the title song and the Bond Theme! The movie needs a good modern action score. That's what Thomas Newman did for Skyfall and Spectre. A24 4,345
Sounds good. Warm (those muted strings!), intimate and, of course, autumnly. Nice. Love when the classical guitar ends the melody in a flageolet (harmonics) note. Doesn't sound so good. The orchestra sits too far away and the aural exciter (or whatever effect they used) is severely abused here, causing too much artifacts in the treble. Not a fan of the movie or the soundtrack but Hatching Baby Raptor is nice and strongly reminds me of the music he wrote for A.I.. Not sure if there is a remastered version but I listened to the original release. Not Mr. Big
