Marian Schedenig 8,814
Vienna, February 16, 2014, he was sitting down. I think it was right after his back injury, might even have been the concert right after Berlin. I never expected him to finish his tour, let alone to actually return to Vienna yet again (he did this year).

Popular Post Thor 8,112
I don't know if any of you have seen this video yet, but I find it utterly fascinating. It's footage from a (presumably recent) private party where Morricone writes a theme -- on the spot -- for one of his friends: This is a cool, rare item in and of itself, but of course my mind starts to wander, and imagine how awesome it would have been to have a similar video for Williams. Koray Savas 2,254
I recall an anecdote a filmmaker told where Morricone wrote a fully orchestrated theme for the film they were discussing on a dinner napkin. Can’t remember who it was.
ManofDestiny 78
I am working on the chronological track order of Legend of 1900. Almost finish, but there is one track I can't find its place. Can anyone please tell me where the track "I can and then" used in the film? Or it is an unused cue? Thanks a lot!
Holko 10,019
The local Media Markt has a bunch of different Morricone compilations, mostly generic as I saw (not specifically western or drama). They have the 60 years collection which I listened into and hate, a big box the size of the JP collection or Titanic, so I guess it has 3-4 discs, and this: Should I go for this latter, or is it not optimal and should I rather snoop out the others more properly and get back here? I always prefer a composer's original vintage recordings if the quality is listenable enough.
Naïve Old Fart 10,235
Where you can, always pick the OST tracks, if they are listed. There's a CD that came out recently, with EM's face on it. Is that the 60 years CD? It looked pretty rubbish.
Holko 10,019
Yeah, that one with the orange suit on the cover, those are subpar rerecordings. I'm not quite sure what you meant by that first sentence.
Naïve Old Fart 10,235
Right. What I meant is: don't buy rerecordings, or concert arrangements, if you can buy a compilation CD consisting of OST tracks. Holko
Holko 10,019
Yeah, that's a no-brainer. Now I'm specifically interested in that "very best of" album, if someone owns it and could tell me whether to go for it or tell me a better one.

Bespin 8,654
In his forties Morricone still scored alimentary bullshit for the italian TV. Like I said, it's two different path. Personally, I think that early Morricone scores have aged badly, so much more than the early Williams. But these are two geniuses.

Naïve Old Fart 10,235
BEN-HUR: magnificent, CE3K: beyond criticism. To me, THE MISSION is Morricone's SCHINDLER'S LIST: I see the greatness in it, I really do, but it just doesn't move me. THE THING, on the other hand... Jurassic Shark 12,815
I don't really like The Mission - score nor film. The score of course has some beautiful highlights, but as a whole it's not that good - and it has Morricone's trademark Sloppy Counterpoint™, where he just puts two existing themes on top of each other and hopes for the best. Schindler's List is a much better listening experience, IMO.
Bespin 8,654
The Mission, that's the St-Graal! Even John Williams can't write with such emotion and poetry, we can give that to Morricone. John Williams is efficient, terribly efficient... he hit the spot everytime... well, almost everytime! But can we call him a "poet"?
Taikomochi 1,185
The Mission has some of the greatest film music ever written in it, but it is not one of the greatest scores ever written. Jurassic Shark 12,815
Thanks @Muad'Dib, but I've heard virtually all of these. I've been checking out Morricone's soundtracks for a long time and I still do, but very seldom do I find something that I consider great. The Untouchables is one of my favourite scores, though, together with some of his spaghetti westerns (Dollar trilogy + West). You should check out the expanded soundtrack release of The Untouchables!
