@Holko, I would be interested what are your top five John Williams scores. Thanks!

Currently two threads above people specified their personal top 10 John Williams scores. Just take the first five of each top 10 list and you're done with the exercise.

So it means that you don't want to list your top five favourite John Williams scores?

Sure, Star Wars Episode IV started it all off, but to me, TROS is like a final keystone to "the soundtrack of our lives".

True. But is it the best SW score in your opinion?

Emotionally TROS competes with TESB. TESB is possibly the best taking the thematic richness into account.

That's a strong statement to make. I'm giving TROS another listen tomorrow.

There's a difference between favorite and what I consider to be the greatest score of all time.

E.T. is not my favorite

I see. I just thought that if you consider E.T. the greatest score of all time, it would also take the top spot on your top 5 JW list.

So, is it Raiders? :)

That was the top ten scores JW composed in 2023.

I wonder if JW ever thought about his top five favorite scores of his own work. He is always asked about his favorite, and he usually says CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND. But does he have a top five list?

Over JP, nice! You are the first one to pick the sequel  over the original.

now that i think about it, Crusade, Raiders and Empire all rotate to being my favorite.  E.T. is so close to being in the rotation.

And only recently did Schindler's List break into my top 5, replacing Jaws.

I couldn't choose betwen them.

I love Jaws, but SL is much more significant, it's just so powerful, knowing what it was written for. Jaws is an entertaining film and the score is a perfect representation of it, but Schindler's List is something more than just a film, and Williams created something very special and equally important to it.

agreed.  and SL even makes my top 5 with 2 cues i usually skip over, due to how gut-wrenching they are, with the corresponding scenes that are forever etched into my brain (Auschwitz-Birkenau & Immolation).  I really have to be in the right mood to listen to those cues.

Schindler's Workforce is one of my favorite pieces of all time.

Me too! It's just too emotional in a very emotional score. SL really stands out in the oeuvre of Williams.

nah i've just listened to the shit out of Jaws over the years.  Jaws will be back in the top 5 some day.

also, why Temple of Doom is not in my top 5, even though the 'hits' on the album are prob some of my most listened to cues....it's simple....

everything from the Village to Short Round's Escape just doesn't hold up to what Raiders and TLC do through their respective parts of the score.  At some point, i learned to appreciate the whole with those scores.

It's a top 5, not a top 10

What happened is that I couldn't decide which SW score to put in there, so I went with those that are "easier" to put in a top for me.

Fair enough. But if you had to choose one SW score, what would it be?

Depending on my mood, it could be any of the Original Trilogy. I'd need to listen to them again in order to form a more informed opinion of which one of them would enter a top 5 or 10. The prequels also would have a nice shot in a top 10 or 15.

Best I can do is the top five JW scores I'd want to listen to at this moment. Answers could be very different tomorrow depending on my mood and what I'd already listened to recently.

  1. 1941
  2. Superman
  3. Raiders
  4. Return of the Jedi
  5. Always

A "top five of all time" list would definitely include Star Wars, ESB, and Raiders. But the other two slots are really, really, really damn hard. They wouldn't go to any of the others on today's list, though.

I agreed that it’s not cheating to include an entire series of scores. Especially if it has DoD. ;)

Wow, 1941 at first place? Does the film itself have a factor in it, or you like the score so much in itself?

Remember, that's just what I was most interested in listening to at that moment. It wouldn't make my top five for all time, although I do like the score quite a bit. (Incidentally, I've never seen the film, partly because I'm afraid it would ruin the score for me! 😂)

1. E.T

2. Schindler's List
