Bridge of Spies, not so much.
Disco Stu 15,495
That's crazy to me, especially if you love those movies (which are all 3 amazing). In terms of dialogue, Bridge of Spies has a better script than any of them (which I guess can be attributed to the Coen brothers maybe?).
Josh500 1,615
What about the BFG? I didn't like BFG, either. The score was okay, though.
Disco Stu 15,495
I think The BFG is basically just fine. It's mostly light and fun but ultimately forgettable. I do enjoy Rylance's mocap performance and his silly dialogue (mostly straight from Dahl). It's definitely not some trainwreck disaster. It's unambitious and inoffensive. Shorter version: meh! Josh500 1,615
Well, yeah, I guess the movie itself is okay... It is what it is, a fantasy movie for kids. It's just that I'm not the target audience, meaning I would never have watched it if it weren't for Spielberg's and Williams's involvement. So I sat through it, trying to focus on it and get into it, and mostly unable to. I just listened to the music whenever it came on, thinking about something else. Disco Stu 15,495
The music fits the movie perfectly: light and fun! For some reason, I've always thought since first hearing that the opening performance of the main melody in the suite would work really well blasting over the speaker system in the Fantasyland part of Disney theme parks. Josh500 1,615
Come to think of it, the BFG overture melody is slightly reminiscent of the Disney theme! Orchestration, texture, feeling is very similar.

The orchestration lines up with the tilt down from the stars, the reveal of the flag and fireworks, and the warm orchestral swell at 0:24 occurs exactly when the Disney logo appears. Can't help but wonder if Williams wrote it for the Disney logo but they changed their minds. Will

crumbs 14,316
I just checked the 4 company logos at the start of The BFG and Williams' music syncs up the whole way through! The lack of selections from The Lost World, A.I. Artificial Intelligence, War of the Worlds, and A Timeless Call is disappointing, to say the least. Plus, including just one movement from An Unfinished Journey is... strange. As others have noted, many more superb pieces could have - or should have - been included in this "Ultimate" Spielberg/Williams release. My theory is that Williams and Sony had originally planned to record two albums-worth of material... but eventually opted to reduce the recording sessions - or omit some of the recordings - to fit on a single additional CD. Then to fill the spot where "Vol. 4" would have been, a short DVD was thrown-together. I supposed it's possible the musical contents of the CDs will also be on the DVD, but I wouldn't bet on it. All have been modified from the original soundtrack recording in some way or another. The most different would have to be "Getting Out the Vote" because it has been expanded to full orchestra. The first half of "The People's House" is the same as the soundtrack for the most part, with a few minor differences, and then it segues into its second half, which is essentially the same as the second half of the Chris Martin performance. Three of the movements (the two I just mentioned plus the string version of "With Malice Toward None") can be heard in the video below.
Tom 4,658
Williams should have just entitled the full trumpet version of With Malice Toward None, The People's House (since that is half the track anyway) or such, then there would be less confusion.
