Disco Stu 6753 Report post Posted August 8, 2018 It’s a movie based on one of the most famous and popular pieces of classical music in history, the story is presumably heavily built around the score, and it is conducted by probably the most famous current director of a major orchestra in America. Makes sense to me. 2 Loert and Yavar Moradi reacted to this

Warrior of Wet Dreams 1507 Report post Posted October 16, 2018 So, with classical music blending with original score, perhaps this can be the JNH equivalent of Broughton's Three Musketeers? 1 Yavar Moradi reacted to this
Disco Stu 6753 Report post Posted October 16, 2018 Should be an entertaining holiday listen. I'm hoping it's the kind of score that pairs with drinking hot chocolate, sitting under a fleece blanket. Richard Penna 809 Report post Posted October 16, 2018 Marketing must be in overdrive for this release - 4 names aside from JNH. He shot you down, Lang Lang One thing is certain: the contrasts in the score whenever Tchaikovsky's inventions end and James Newton Howard's begin will be painful to hear. Still I think the movie will be enjoyable... (Keira Knightley + Tschaikovsky? The day I heard about it was a good day.)

leeallen01 1218 Report post Posted October 17, 2018 If I remember correctly, JNH said at a composer talk that the score is minimal Tchaikovsky. Apparently it is 75% him, then 20% him in the 'style' of Tchaikovsky, and then 5% actual Tchaikovsky. 3 Luka, Pieter_Boelen and Yavar Moradi reacted to this

crumbs 4569 Report post Posted October 17, 2018 I assume they have a Solo/JW/Powell type arrangement, where Tchaikovsky wrote all the main themes for JNH to adapt, plus some incidental cues like 'The Big Nut,' 'Grabbing the Tissues,' and 'The Shower.' leeallen01 1218 Report post Posted October 26, 2018 Some gorgeous melodies. His use of Woodwind just gets better and better. I'm not enormously familiar with Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker, only the well known melodies, so I'm not sure which moments are adapted by JNH or entirely original. Some things are obviously JNH.
