Miguel Andrade got a reaction from Matt S. in John Williams' concert debuts with various orchestras
I believe he guest conducted them on tour when Fiddler had to be replaced due to illness, when they had reached LA.
His first appearance with the orchestra, after signing his first two year contract, was an off-season concert in January 1980 at Carnegie Hall.

Let Johnny have his privacy. We are lucky he is even doing this at his age. Also we are living in a difficult time with covid, and he is 89 years old....

Take heart, @King Mark, sure sounds like we'll be getting it on record soon enough.

The arrangement for ASM is pretty striking. Follows the formal outline of the 2018 arrangement but with quite a lot added, including a brand new intro and outro and expanded inner section. Interesting that he gives a full statement of the B-section of the theme that was missing from that 2018 arrangement. And it ends if anything even darker and pained than the 2018 one. With all those drooping chromatic sigh figures towards the end, I half expected him to hint at Kylo Ren's theme!

    Here's the new updated link:

Tickets will start selling on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at 2PM CEST through the Vivaticket circuit: https://www.vivaticket.com

Price is not yet confirmed, but I expect it will be in the usual range of € 110 max. - €20 min.

At first, because of some unclear wording on the original press release, it looked like this would be an outdoor concert in Milan's main Duomo square, but today it's been confirmed that the concert will take place in the legendary Teatro alla Scala, one of the temples of opera and classical music in the world.

This is another historic moment in John Williams' career. It truly feels incredible to imagine the Maestro walking on the stage of this amazing place full of history and conduct a concert of his own music.

I didn't know Maurizio had so much pull in the music business already.

Joking aside, this is almost getting absurd. When I was at the airport queuing for my London flight in 2018 and the news came through that Williams had to cancel due to illness, I was almost certain I'd never get to see him live. Then I flew to Tanglewood to get my one (or so I thought) chance. Since then, we've had Vienna, and if all goes well I'll have seen him five times by the end of next week, with more opportunities already announced.

At this point, I don't even feel like committing to this - if Williams really wants to return to Vienna, right before or after Milano wouldn't seem like a bad opportunity. And with everything else, London doesn't sound too unlikely, either.

I'll just wait and see if anything else comes up and what my schedule will be. But a trip to Milano is certainly an option - I've only been there once for half a day, with no time for anything but out choir concert.

Does anyone know when the Scala usually opens the ticket sales?

I still can’t believe this. It’s beyond anything I could have ever dreamed of. John Williams conducting his music in the city where I’m born and where I live, in one of the temples of classical music. Utterly amazing.

It's definitely among 10 favorite movies with a Williams score.  But I'm a huge Altman fan anyway.

The whole point of the theme is that it's malleable. The same notes can convey a 'love theme,' a 'dramatic theme,' a jazzy/blues theme, etc. depending on how Williams presents it.

Clearly this particular arrangement is what JW considers the 'love theme' mode of the melody. Not sure how that makes "very little sense" -- arguably it makes perfect sense!

The score's only soundtrack release has a track literally called Love Theme from "The Long Goodbye."

    Summon The Heroes (1996)
Williams returns to the subject of the Olympics for this overture written for the 1996 Atlanta Games.  It opens with trumpets heralding the uncommon man (and woman) with a melodic contour that strongly brings to mind Copland.  The melody then goes through a very Williams pastoral-heroic Americana treatment by solo trumpet, before the theatrics begin again with characteristic Williams flourishes in brass and strings, with a b-theme introduced.  Similar to the theme for the 84 games, Williams brings in a passage of intricate anticipation that sets off a rousing restatement and climax.
It's a pretty great work all around.

Miguel Andrade reacted to TownerFan in STORY OF A WOMAN (music by John Williams) - coming to Blu Ray
Story of a Woman was shot and produced in 1968. Williams wrote the score right before starting main work on Goodbye, Mr. Chips. It was likely a very quick assignment, as it came between several other projects and commissions. According to a Variety article of the era, the score was recorded in Rome in October 1968, with Universal Pictures music director Stanley Wilson supervising the recording on Williams' behalf, as the Maestro was in London to oversee pre-score sessions for Chips.

Historian Emilio Audissino actually asked Williams directly where the score was recorded, and the Maestro seemed to remember it was done indeed in Italy, but he mentioned the city of Milano. Ornella Vanoni's vocals were very much likely recorded in Milano, as she has always been based in this city, but from what I gather the orchestral accompaniment of the song was recorded in LA at a later date, with Williams conducting.

Was it just me, or were these performances extra special? I felt the same about film night. Something about them was more intimate, I don't know why.

I will say that it was nice hearing the (slightly revised) concerto, which hearing it close up and clearly, that piece is all blues style harmonies but very narrative. What a masterpiece.

Seems to follow exactly the formal structure of the 2008 arrangement for orchestra, except a subtly redone opening and brief new codetta.

Currently intermission at Symphony Hall. The encore for the first half was Williams and Mutter doing a violin arrangement of his love theme from “The Long Goodbye”, which I believe was new (especially based on his speech beforehand, which said how there had been vocal versions but never one for an instrumentalist until this one for Mutter).

This will mark the first commercial recording of Williams leading the NY Philharmonic. Previous to this, only the Theme from Schindler List, as recorded in concert back in 2006 was available on disc.
