Solo: A freaking Star Wars Story by John freaking Powell
I surprisingly went a number of weeks without listening to this...now I'm addicted again. I can never listen to just one track or one highlight, I always end up wanting to hear the whole thing. It's like film music pizza! I work at a pizza place, yet for some reason I'll never get tired of pizza.

Every track is addictive for me to where I can never just play one cue without wanting to play the whole album, but if placed in a situation where I was forced to choose a particularly invigorating moment as my favorite, it'd likely be this one.

Series 5 is the apex of Nu-Who, great stories, good drama and relationships between the three leads and a phenomenal theme. Though, my personal favorite series is the third 2007 period, 10 and Martha were brilliant and the series arc was one of the best out of the show.

    Hi there,

I've made a cover of the original Jurassic Park main theme.

I figured you guys on this forum would like it.
I'm a big fan of John Williams and have been making music for 20 years.

This one isn't my best production or cover, but it was a real challenge for me because I only re-made it by ear.

As of yet, no film whose script was written after TFA was released has come out. Maybe it's worth giving a little time for Lucasfilm to adapt to criticism before firing people left, right and centre?

I just think it’s a sad statement about the direction our culture has taken when people genuinely think there is some conspiracy between Kathleen Kennedy and Disney to attack Star Wars fans personally, and think it so loudly. You didn’t like the movie, fine. No need to invent all these conspiracy theories about Disney shilling bot accounts to brigade reviews and putting the squeeze on Mark Hamill like he has been taken hostage. It’s totally divorced from reality.

It’s a series of pop movies about people with laser swords, and I say that as someone who loves Star Wars very dearly. Find something better to do with your life. You aren’t that important.

This is exactly what I thought about the score. Your problems are identical to mine. The "RCP" percussion adds absolutely nothing (and as you said sounds like How to Train your Dragon) to what's going on and in fact covers up his work. I also thought the call backs were too heavy handed during the Kessel Run. I would have preferred an original piece specific to the Kessel Run similar to how Williams writes different pieces for action scenes.

The percussion just annoys me and I'm a percussionist myself. As a good friend of mine said way back in the 7th grade, "Percussion is like salt, too much and you ruin the plate. Too little and the food needs a little spice. When you get it just right it's perfect", or something along those lines.

All that being said, I thought the soundtrack was fantastic without the RCP percussion as it sounds distinctly Star Wars and retains the tone and style of fast moving brass and strings perfectly.

BTW I think Meet Han works far better as the opening track of the album with The Adventures of Han as the final track, a kind of cleaner, celebration of the main themes with a very golden-age opening fanfare. I love the low brass that starts Meet Han. A really moody intro to a SW score that doesn't attempt to match the Main Titles at all.

So having hard this a few times...

The Hero theme surprisingly is a bit bone-headed. It is your typical manly man modern hero macho theme in the form of a power anthem that you expect modern composers to write. I did not have a good initial reaction to it but I have made Peace with it. Has Williams ever written a theme like this? I kinda had the same reaction to it that I had when I heard Gia's hero theme for spiderman. Just a very basic construction.

The Searching theme however is a belter. The theme was stuck in my head. I was whistling it constantly while driving home. It is also a more sophisticated construction and more star warsy. The hero theme is like a superhero theme.

The concert suite itself is very exciting and unusual. Honestly with a few microedits, this might as well be a score cue which is scoring a desperate high stakes chase sequence. Think quidditch or any number of high octane chase scenes that Williams has scored.

The strident rhtym and the insistent motif (sounds like the quidditch motif) give the piece an extraordinary forward drive.

It is a fantastic piece and the searching theme takes flight. I love it.

Hearing this, and seeing the film has soooooooo many chase scenes. I wonder what kind of magic Williams would have unleashed.

    Just finished the whole album.

Wow, this is a really exhausting album, it's like when you do a sprint, you force it out in the beginning, and then you take a rest in the middle, but then, you have to finsih the task so you take a full force again, until you pass out in the end.

But the thing is, I am exhausted in awe and wonder.

Thematically speaking, and im talking about Powell's, this may not be his best effort, but if we are talking about one true composer ability, i think Powell just hit the peak here, way above there.
I love how he geniusly plays with his own themes (powell's, let me straight that out), and almost at any moment, makes a hell of revelation for me.

I love it the way Powell truly experiments with the writing, and really plays it out.

And the most important thing is, like someone here said, HE IS REALLY GOOD WITH STORYTELLING. He is a very good storyteller, and thats why all tracks in the album are worth the listen, and they really flow!
and that what makes him stood apart from the rest of them.

    Bravo!

    Hi everyone,

I just attended an open rehearsal of tomorrow's Boston Pops concert (with the maestro himself conducting!). It's going to feature the world premiere of "The Adventures of Han," as well as Pops premieres of "Rebellion is Reborn" and the new "Han Solo & the Princess" arrangement.

I've got a lot to say about the new Solo piece, which I'm sure we'll all be poring over soon enough. But I thought I'd just share this much -- you're going to love it. It's complex, substantial, and memorable. There's some impossibly virtuosic trumpet writing in the middle that is especially impressive, very much in the vein of "Rey's Journey" from TLJ, only even more elaborate. In fact, the whole piece feels like a hybrid of straight-forward character themes (themes--yes, there's two) and action set-piece. I noticed some welcome shades of the ostinatos from "I Can Fly Anything" and the little recurring octatonic motif from "The Battle of Crait."

If it's using this thematic material, I imagine Powell's score should be a real barn-burner!
