this is so unbelievably cool, it's like a glimpse into an alternate universe where John Williams scored the ST but it was the Thrawn Trilogy:

I think it’s telling that the Series 12 soundtrack has been announced and there’s no buzz for it on any film music forums.

With recent revelations that the show is at its lowest interest level since it came back in 2005, I’d say the Beeb will be looking very carefully at how to proceed.

I’m rewatching the whole series from the 9th Doctor onwards and the fatal flaw of the Chris Chibnall era is that he’s completely forgotten what the show is about...the companions. They are the characters who are put through the ringer, they are the ones who help the Doctor see things from a less alien perspective.

More was achieved in the final 2 episodes of Capaldi’s run in developing Bill and what being a companion means to the Doctor than we’ve had in the 21 Chibnall episodes to date. It’s impossible to properly develop the three companions they insist on having when every episode needs to come up with more and more dopier reasons for the three of them to be separated from the Doctor and each other.

I for one sorely miss Steven Moffat and think the criticisms thrown at him during his tenure now pale in comparison to how daft the show has become. Peter Capaldi’s run was genius storytelling, giving proper character arcs to Clara, Bill, The Doctor and Missy with cinematic flare.

Oh yeah, sure, expectations are also part of the equation.

Depends. John Waters actually makes comments through a trashy or campy lens. STARSHIP TROOPERS is, on surface level, a trashy genre flick, but has deepfounded satire beneath. A film like PREDATORS, as mentioned earlier (or EXPENDABLES, for that matter) are clearly molded on an 80s 'gung ho' action aesthetic, and is wallowing in references; a kind of "celebration" of that particular trash/violence aestethic. Without having this in mind, one would be losing out on half the film's value. What I'm saying is that one needs to understand a film, and ask 'what is this film's project'? From there, one can evaluate whether it succeeds or not.

Not at all. One of the most common diseases in 'fan communities' is the inability to judge a work on its own terms; or the inability to see what the film's project really is. I don't go into a film like, say, PREDATORS, expecting Ingmar Bergman (or quality criteria thereof). Rather, it's a great, tight monster movie that ticks off all the boxes that makes this particular genre film successful; visceral, intense, claustophobic and with gorgeous, "earthly" cinematography. Vice versa, the more recent THE PREDATOR (2018) was a terrible affair, but I'm again using the same applicable criteria.

I don't like everything. I like good films IN everything, whether it's bizarre arthouse cinema or fluffy Hollywood genre material. Ultimately, what matters is how well it succeeds in what it is.

I could just as easily have rattled off a great many Hollywood films from this particular era that were BAD, but Edmilson seems to have mentioned several of those already. Plus, one can always argue about the merits of individual films. My point is rather that you can't make sweeping 'period generalizations' like this. It's a fallacy and dishonest. There is good and bad stuff every year, and within every period.

A 'haunted-house' mystery that was gripping, creepy, amusing, set during a real-life historical event and which also featured a terrifying incarnation of a classic foe. The Doctor's 'speech' in this was not about some 'woke' concern du jour, but about having to wrestle with a moral dilemma.

In other words, 'The Haunting Of Villa Diodati' felt like 'proper' Doctor Who ... it was easily the best episode since the curveball-throwing Judoon one, and one of this season's/Whittaker's best in general. An absolute belter  .

sounds like it was recorded with an orchestra, particularly when the trumpets come in that doesn't sound anything too dissimilar from what I'd hear in terms of mixing on something like his Rogue One soundtrack.

pretty clear this isn't the full theme but either way I like the dark noir vibes and it feels particularly fitting for Batman so I'm keen to hear and see more.

Instead of giving into her fears and calling herself a Skywalker, Rey actually grows as a Jedi and understands the balance that should be maintained. On paper, Rey Solana is already a better character than Abrams' Rey Skywalker/Rey Palpatine. I guess Manichaean dualism will always be an integral part of Star Wars.

    differing creative visions my ass.

I read the entire thing and it's incredibly apparent that TROS is a bastardised version of this script, yet JJ and the like claim they never read any early scripts in pre-production. that's blatantly false, there's so many similar beats in TROS to this that it has to be more than coincidence, and every single one of them are done infinitely worse in TROS.

I am going to straight up say it here - after thinking about it and reading the outline and seeing the art work - I think it is one of the great unmade films of the modern times.

This film really could have been something special and spectacular and would have taken the star wars universe into bold new directions.

Trevorrow's concept and script are infinitely better than the garbage Palpatine rehash that we got in Skywalker.

    What a tragedy.

Trevorrow's idea of Finn leading a rebellion of defected stormtroopers to fight against the First Order and the opulent greed of the higher-ups in a battle at Coruscant seems like such a logical next step for his character. Not all of his ideas for Episode IX sit right with me, but that's a great one.

I mean, there's that one line about Jannah being a former stormtrooper in Episode IX, sure, fine. Does the film even remember that fact past the one scene she mentions it in? No.

Sometimes I ask myself if people realize the ones who are constantly reducing actors and films down to ethnicity, color and sex, and evaluate them based on that, are the actual racists and sexists.
People demanding a black Bond because of his blackness are out of this world blind.

She at least writes her own damned music, which is more than what most pop musicians these days can say.

She's talented. Not just for how young she is, but compared to most pop musicians out there right now.

I also have a rule: it's idiotic to judge a person's talent and skill based on their point of view. Not the same thing. I apply this equally to fools who try to dismiss Wagner, Walt Disney, one day John White Man Williams, and yes, even Billie Eilish by the likes of you and weepy strings up there.

Don't turn into the crap you're trying to oppose.

Not that many films. FORBIDDEN WARRIOR is one that I love; there are some Williamsesque moments in that too. But he's done a low of "show pieces" for various events, and that's where he gets to show off his skill. One that I particularly like is his music for a BATMAN amusement park ride, which sounds like Danny Elfman's score as if it had been 'reimagined' by Williams:

My favorite JW imitation comes from Kyle Newmaster's contributions to the Kinect: Star Wars soundtrack. He's not only able to mimic the sound and the mannerisms, but also how JW would develop ideas throughout cues in the OT and PT eras in a far more convincing manner than some of the other imitators.
