TLJ. It's not a bad score by any means, but it's obvious JW wasn't as inspired as he clearly was by TFA and TROS. Chalk that up to limited exotic locations and new characters, heavy reliance on temp tracks, or the lack of pushing from Johnson to get him to think outside the box. A Rey/Ren connection theme is the trilogy's greatest missed opportunity.

It’s not like Williams is unknown for writing great scores for subpar films. At least half of his catalogue can be described as such.

But it is nagging me that the best sequel film had the weakest score. Gosh darn it.

Agree that Rian is a much better filmmaker. But I will say for JJ that his movies are very entertaining (if somewhat hollow), and very over the top, which probably helped them elicit bombastic, engaging material from Williams.

I daresay JW also went a bit above and beyond with his music for TROS, writing new themes even when they weren't "necessary". We didn't need a trio theme, "evil" theme, victory theme, etc but we got them anyway, and they were really good. So he may have been channeling some this-is-my-last-Star-War feels, doing more than was called for, as he so often does.

Well Rian did show more respect for the music, but in terms of the compositions, IMO Williams sounds more inspired on both TFA and TROS compared to TLJ. However, I do think the music heard in TLJ works really, really well in the film itself, so maybe these films just called for slightly different treatments.

Moffatt always had ambition, while Chibs plays it safe for the most part, but when he does take risks it’s in the most excruciatingly boring way.

I also miss the writing being, well, literary. Moffat’s best scripts are oozing with double meaning, poetry, dealing with more abstract interpretations of good and evil (moreso in the Capaldi era; the “mercy” through-line of The Witches Familiar is a good example). And he always zagged when you thought he would zig. Sometimes that could be frustrating, but over time I’ve come to appreciate his bait-and-switch storylines. Especially Hell Bent, which is set up as an epic showdown as the Doctor finally arrives on his home planet after going through literal hell, only for a much smaller story about grief and obsession to play out instead.

I miss having to actually think while watching Doctor Who, instead of having everything spoon-fed and dumbed down.

I think it’s telling that the Series 12 soundtrack has been announced and there’s no buzz for it on any film music forums.

With recent revelations that the show is at its lowest interest level since it came back in 2005, I’d say the Beeb will be looking very carefully at how to proceed.

I’m rewatching the whole series from the 9th Doctor onwards and the fatal flaw of the Chris Chibnall era is that he’s completely forgotten what the show is about...the companions. They are the characters who are put through the ringer, they are the ones who help the Doctor see things from a less alien perspective.

More was achieved in the final 2 episodes of Capaldi’s run in developing Bill and what being a companion means to the Doctor than we’ve had in the 21 Chibnall episodes to date. It’s impossible to properly develop the three companions they insist on having when every episode needs to come up with more and more dopier reasons for the three of them to be separated from the Doctor and each other.

I for one sorely miss Steven Moffat and think the criticisms thrown at him during his tenure now pale in comparison to how daft the show has become. Peter Capaldi’s run was genius storytelling, giving proper character arcs to Clara, Bill, The Doctor and Missy with cinematic flare.

I was spoiled on the returning character unfortunately (by Russell T Davies posting a selfie on Instagram, no less!). But I was completely shocked by the second twist in the episode.

Finally, Chibnall is taking some risks. The show has been rather dull and boring overall since Moffat left. Sure it’s a nice change of pace, but even at his worst Moffat knew how to shake things up and tell new stories. And he was never boring. Colour me intrigued, I’m looking forward to seeing where this goes.

...Whoa, why the snarky attitude?  And the fact that you even made this image shows that you aren't understanding/listening to my point: I WANT the triplet to be played where it's written. But in the Pops recording, it's actually played a bar later than that. Did you even read my initial post? You pointed to the wrong spots and were wrong on both counts:

    1. I did not want the triplet there in bar 36 as you pointed to; I wanted it in bar 37 as written.
    2. It was not played there in bar 37 where written; it was played in bar 38—one bar late.

I would say to just crank up the volume or use better headphones, but based on your comment and that image it seems like you don't even know what I'm saying... Where did I ever say I want it played earlier than written?

Thank you. I don't really think it sounds bad, either! I always just assumed it was a change made for the concert version, until I noticed that other recordings of the concert version feature the timpani in the same spot as it is in "Remembering Childhood" (and the printed score). Even the video of Williams conducting this piece with the Pops has the timpanist (possibly the same guy) coming in at the right time, so I'm not sure what exactly happened with the recording. But either way, thanks for your comment.

Docteur Qui got a reaction from Tydirium in Timpanist error in the Boston Pops "Flight to Neverland" recording?
You're incorrect @karelm. The recording clearly has the timpani come in a full bar after where it's written. It's supposed to double the low brass in the third bar of that excerpt (E E E A), but in the recording comes in at the next bar (bar 38 for those playing at home).

I don't think it sounds bad, and it may have been an intentional change from the podium. But spare the snark will you.
