They did - for swimming. Depending on the location / FORMAT of the film, you get either that scene in the Google Drive link, or you get a scene of the new kid characters (and I believe Kate Winslet's character...EDIT not it's not - the one I thought was her is in this Google clip while Winslet is the pregnant one. The similar faces threw me off) swimming where it shows off the underwater effects. It's a very light, peaceful scene with a taste of Simon Franglen's score that sounds firmly in line with the "Pandora" Disneyworld album. I saw it in IMAX 3D (no HFR) and that swimming scene is what I got.

Didn't ya'll hear the Avatar music he did with Horner for Pandora: The World Of Avatar? I thought his work on that was great!

Meh. Here's the thing...part of what made Avatar so successful is that is a simple story. That story, which as you mentioned has been told many times before (Dances With Wolves, Pocahontas, Last Samurai, etc.) has a universality, and simplicity to it, that people connect with. It's an old story, and clearly strikes a chord with audiences. Say what you will about Cameron, he's a smart director. He knew exactly what he was doing. He knew well enough that he couldn't throw all this new technology at audiences, and feature a film consisting entirely of blue giants running around in a totally CGI environment and tell a complicated story with complex characters. Avatar was supposed to be an experience that immersed you in a totally different world for a couple of hours. If you spent a lot of time having to think about plot, that spell would have been broken. From a filmmaking standpoint, by giving the audience a kind of cinematic comfort food in terms of the story, it made them more open to the completely new visual experience they were seeing. The audience was a fish out of water on Pandora, as the protagonist was, and by the end they went native as he did. It's brilliant what Cameron did, actually (and Cuarón made much the same choice in Gravity). The un-originality, as you call it, was a feature, not a bug. And obviously, the success of the film speaks for itself. That said, Avatar does in fact lose much of its power on repeated viewings (as does Gravity), especially watching at home...I enjoyed in the cinema, but barely got through a second viewing on Blu-Ray. When you take away the immersive experience, the movie's thinness in plot and character do come to the forefront. So if I seems like I'm a great lover of this film, I'm not. I just respect that Cameron knew what he was doing.

Well the rumor is that most of this movie is set underwater and filmed underwater, on a new moon on Pandora. Considering the trailer had like one underwater shot in it really, I don’t think we’ve seen enough of the good stuff. That’s probably on purpose. Cameron is always pushing the boundaries visually and technically and I suspect this will be no different. I just hope the story is good enough to support these visuals. I think it has the potential to be fresh and even a little scary. Underwater has a natural claustrophobia he could exploit shamelessly. Even though I was one of those people disappointed in the first movie I am still very curious to see what this underwater Cameron movie will be like.

Alfred... my God, Alfred... one day I'll open this Pandora box, but I'm not ready yet.

My dad, God rest his soul, introduced me to classic rock n’ roll. He introduced me to The Beatles; I’ve been a fan ever since. He was a huge Beatles fan; he owned all of their albums on CD. He knew how to play the drums and would often rock to some of their greatest songs. He also owned the DVD collection of The Beatles documentaries, as well as Yellow Submarine, A Hard Day’s Night, and Help (which I still own, though I intend to upgrade the three films to getting the 4K/Blu-Ray releases). In 2016, at age 56, he was diagnosed with colon cancer. He fought for two years. In January 2018, he was put in hospice care; I put Pandora on and had his Beatles station playing by his bedside. He was at peace. He passed away February 2018. I have been looking forward to this documentary series since it was first announced. I will watch this in memory of and in dedication to my dad.

I agree with both of you. I much prefer the character driven approach of Batman Begins & The Dark Knight Rises to the plot-driven middle film. Definitely a minority opinion, since most people seem to regard TDK as some kind of masterpiece. I like it well enough, but rarely return to it. In any event, yes the 4K's look fantastic. Nick - who prefers opening Pandora's box to a can of worms.

In some of the delux edition Avatar tracks it’s pretty synthy (“ Death of Quaritch” seems to have a synth string section and “Pandora” also seems to as well) It might just be how he recorded his strings for that score (?) Thunderheart is another good synth heavy score. And Apocalypto. I think for the most part Horner liked to use those synths as just another color/texture in his scores. They’re not supposed to sound like an acoustic instrument. I prefer that to large “symphonic” scores that are produced entirely with synths - attempting to sound like a real orchestra. That’s kinda grating.

Will it be a crossover with the Fast & Furious franchise? I'm already picturing Diesel and the family driving their cars into Pandora.

I don't disagree with you that film can be more than a strict storytelling medium. Or even that you can tell a story purely through images and sound. Of course you can. You mentioned several directors, but George Lucas is actually the person that's been the highest profile proponent of this. All the other directors you mentioned used technology to push the medium forward, but they still all use their films to tell a plot/character based story. There may be moments of pure technological wonder, but they're only moments, and ultimately still exist to service the story they're trying to tell. And frankly even Lucas never got around to making the "experimental", non-linear, non story driven films he always talked about. Every movie he's directed has been plot driven. Of course, one day we'll all be able to put on VR gear and explore Pandora and similar worlds to our heart's content without any story at all. And I'll be the first to sign up, I think that's probably the future of cinema. But even then, I think you'll find that what people are really going to want (like with video games) is to participate in a story.

This. We make way too much of "world-building" in our contemporary franchises - moreso than the filmmakers themselves make of it. In none of the major franchises that take place in fictional, imaginative settings (so Star Wars, Middle Earth, Harry Potter, parts of the MCU) does the plot ever gets paused outright in favour of exploring the world of the film. There is no, for instance, an interlude in any of the Star Wars films where the story halts and we get mockumentary footage of Tatooine; at no point are Frodo or Bilbo getting a guided tour around Rivendell; and, likewise, at no point whatsoever does Cameron just freely explores Pandora. Its explored only insofar as its important to the plot.

Mate, the plot, whatever you think of it, is what pulls the whole thing together. Even Cameron would be the first to tell you that the technology and effects exist to service the plot and character. The plot is exceptionally important. You can enjoy the visuals all you wish, they're vitally important, of course. But I think plot and character play a much bigger role in enveloping you in the world of Pandora (or Titanic) than perhaps you are giving it them credit for. Avatar isn’t a nature documentary after all (though that would admittedly be cool). I highly recommend it.

Oh yes, you've opened up "Pandora's Box" indeed -- although in a positive sense. In regards to your question, he wrote many serious and traditional scores, even though they seem to be overlooked in favour of his cocktaily comedy or jazz scores. Some favs include HATARI, THE HAWAIIANS, THE MOLLY MAGUIRES, THE THIEF WHO CAME TO DINNER, THE NIGHT VISITOR, LIFE FORCE, THE WHITE DAWN and BEAVER VALLEY SUITE. But my favourite of these more traditional scores remains THE ADVENTURES OF THE GREAT MOUSE DETECTIVE. Beyond those, and often in the style he's most known for, favourites include PETER GUNN, SUNFLOWER, BREAKFAST AT FTIFFANY'S and PINK PANTHER STRIKES AGAIN. And obviously about a million non-film albums (many of them featuring our own JW).

In my mind (change my mind), Henry Mancini is more of a background music/song writer than a "big epic film" composer in the style of the composers from the Hollywood "Golden Age". It's not pejorative, he's a great composer, in fact one of the great music composers we had in the modern era, but he's definitely a jazzy/romance guy (he once described himself like a romance guy). Then, I've decided to go with "early" jazzy works like the albums of "Peter Gunn", "Mr. Lucky", "The Blues and the Beast", etc... Then I will turn to "Breakfast at Tiffany's"... "The Pink Panter"... But now I have a question for Mancini aficionados... In his career, did he compose more "traditional" and strucured scores, maybe for more serious movies?
