crumbs 14,364
Bizarre! So all Disney have done since acquiring the licence off Sony is distribute digital copies of the OSTs. Considering Williams' camp have been so mindful of releasing new expansions alongside LTP concerts thus far, this seems a real strange oversight. If they didn't actually play the dialogue/effects track, I might be interested. But otherwise I don't care. Btw...that's all this is - they project the Blu-ray and just use the center channel while the orchestra plays the score. TBH, I'd MUCH rather just hear the music. It was my very first time going to one of these so I sorta knew what to expect and sorta didn't. I detest, abhor and very much dislike the special editions and, tbh, I've never watched the Blu-ray's so this was my very first time ever watching "that version." It' such a slog, for me. And, tbh, I'd much rather just listen to the music alone. I can watch the movie any day. And they already have the subtitles on the screen so why not just let me listen to the score? I know it's not as much of a draw for the audience but that would be my preference. I found myself not even watching the movie and just listening to the music and watching the orchestra, more often than not. The orchestra was just phenomenal. It made me wonder why that entire score hasn't been re-recorded like Jaws and Superman have. It had an energy and excitement that I truly loved. It was interesting to hear tiny moments that were buried in the mix, none of which I can recall right now. But it's also just amazing to hear the full score performed live in front of you. They did not do the Cantina. Just sat there for the 10 or so minutes throughout that sequence. They also did not put the "dianoga" music back where it belonged. It was only played during the Mos Eisley approach as it stands in the SE. I was hoping they might actually put it into the film as they did with the recent Jaws performance. Overall, I'm very happy I went but I wouldn't go again unless they shut off the dialogue and effects. That said, the fact that it just seems like these are just the blu-ray's projected with the center channel of a 5.1 mix playing cheapens it, for me. I could be wrong but, from how dull the mix sounded and how many effects tracks were barely there, that's exactly what it seemed like. I don't know if all of these performances are like that but it sure seemed like that for Star Wars. It was just a pure mono dialogue/effects track. I've seen Williams conduct Star Wars music live feet away from me many times, but the music itself seemed to have so much more umph and power here. I missed the first half hour, but it was basically the panel playing excerpts of different themes and commenting on what the themes represent, how they relate to each other, and sometimes, how they echo classical composers. There weren't any surprises or revelations, but it was amazing to be at a discussion that was so nitpicky and nerdy about Star Wars music that had such a great turn out. It was like JWFan live! I recorded audio of it on my phone so I could enjoy it again, but I'm not sure it's allowed to be posted because of the music clips, and it was a formal event by the Philharmonic. However, I'm friendly with a guy who works for them, so I'll ask if they have plans to officially post a video of it. I'm so excited for Empire, Jedi, and Force Awakens. Star Wars was extraordinary - the power of the drums during the Tusken Raider attack, the dramatic roll and burst of the Imperial/Death Star theme, the gentle beauty of Leia's theme (which I've heard live before, but matched with her scenes, it was even better), the thunderous Throne Room - truly breathtaking. Even the Main Title was even better, live and unrestricted from the not-as-full-sounding '77 recording that was limited by the tech at the time (I love the OST, but it does have that older-recorded-score sound that's hard to describe). Imagining what this will be like with the Imperial March during Vader's first scene in Empire, the furious Clash of the Lightsabers, the heartbreaking carbon freezing chamber scene, that dramatic Imperial March statement after Vader's famous line, the Emperor's theme in Jedi, Luke and Vader's final duel, the harp when Anakin dies, and so much more... this will all be mind blowing. I just wonder what they'll do about the choirs in Jedi and Awakens. It was a shame Cantina Band wasn't live, so who knows? Nevertheless, I can't wait. Its not that unusual. Musically, the love theme belongs to Leia so she could be said to have at least two themes. There are several themes associated with Anakin (his youthful theme, the lament and the march), etc... Did the inventory of leitmotifs in the discussion correspond with what's in the program? Because there are some really dubious sounding stuff in there: another droid motif in the original Star Wars? a Rancor theme? surely those are not canonical leitmotifs, right? They don't appear in Adams' breakdown of the trilogy, and its not like he was particularly picky with that one. I dunno, Perhaps I'd be more inclined to believe those, if the program had anything new to offer on the composer's intentions, but it seems to only quote a series of existing interviews rather than offer any new insight as to what he meant. 7 hours ago, rpvee said: I'm so excited for Empire, Jedi, and Force Awakens.[...]Even the Main Title was even better, live and unrestricted from the not-as-full-sounding '77 recording that was limited by the tech at the time (I love the OST, but it does have that older-recorded-score sound that's hard to describe). It will be interesting since the forces in these concerts seem to be much smaller than the recorded forces. For the original Star Wars and especially The Force Awakens, the recorded orchestra wasn't much bigger than that, so it won't be as big a difference, but with Empire and Jedi Williams used a fuller orchestra and scored some scenes with unusual orchestrations. It will be interesting to see what they do with those, although I assume they'd just lose them. Even the Lord of the Rings concerts do that with all the added brass, woodwinds and timpani that parts of the recorded score feature. If they ever got a chance to do the prequels (which they won't), the last two used a 110-piece orchestra, not to mention choirs which they won't be able to get away with synths. Popular Post Jay 37,474
The concert Friday evening was wonderful! I'm not familiar with the intricate details of the minute differences between all the various versions of Star Wars that have existed post-1997 SE, so to me this seemed like the Blu Ray cut - it featured the full 20th Century Fox logo in the beginning (which the orchestra played, which was great), and the better CGI Jabba as opposed to the first CGI Jabba from '97. The intermission was oddly placed, I thought. It was in the middle of The Death Star cue, as the Millennium Falcon is being pulled into The Death Star. Basically on the wide shot of the Falcon approaching the screen, it just faded out, and the music kind of faded away (I can't recall exactly how they handled it). Upon returning from intermission, they replayed the loud glorious Rebel Fanfare from the cue to a black screen, as the same shot we had already seen of the Falcon being pulled faded in during the music, and the film and cue continued from there. As far as I could tell, everything they played matched the final cut of the film exactly. This means Dianoga ("The Water Snake" ) and the music dialed out of The Walls Converge was not restored, and of course the sections trimmed from The Dune Sea Of Tatooine ("Desert Song") and Chasm Crossfire ("The Swashbucklers") are still gone. This also means the 1997 SE alterations had to be recreated, ie the extended "Look Sir, Droids!" scene, and the extended arrival at Mos Eisley. Honestly, though, when performed live both sections sounded COMPLETELY fine, nothing un-musical about them at all -- and hey, we get to hear most of Dianoga this way! More annoying was the Jabba The Hutt scene, since it was all ROTJ music, and always seems out of place (they did play it perfectly fine, though!) The orchestra played tremendously, and flawlessly from what I could tell! The strings and brass especially nailed everything throughout the evening, really only the percussion sounded different from the original recordings - and it wasn't BAD, just DIFFERENT. Whoever was in control of the cymbals was particularly aggressive, making some really loud crashes happen at times, which was kind of funny! David Newman didn't say a word before or after the performance which I thought was a bit odd, though he did return to the stage TWICE after departing after the end credits. I thought he was going to do an encore of Princess Leia's Theme or something when he came out a second time! I've seen this film countless times, so everytime the orchestra was playing I found myself watching them exclusively, and only really watched the film in between orchestral cues. Both Cantina Band cues came from the speakers, they were not performed live, which I wasn't expecting them to be (it would be kinda weird if they did; I noticed this time while watching the film that the second Cantina Band cue actually loops for a long while due to the Greedo scene!) The audio mix for the evening was perfect, IMO. Every time the orchestra was playing, it was the loudest part of the mix, which is perfect - it's why you're there! This occasionally meant some dialogue got drowned up completely, which is fine by me! (others might take issue with it). I did notice after it was pointed out to me that the left and right channels seemed to mostly be not playing - since most of the dialogue and sound effects come from the center channel this was't a big issue, and I did notice the surround channels were working at some points, there was other points when it was obvious the other channels weren't doing much. Again this wasn't an issue for me, since I've seen the film countless times and I'm there for the music - and the music was always mixed PERFECTLY. Overall a very successful evening, because the score is THAT good; one of my favorites of all time, and a pure pleasure to hear live. This had to have been the first time the Force Theme has been played for a live audience this many times... forever! There are too many musical highlights to mention, but really the entire concert is a treat. Yes, it is indeed a bummer that it's the SE cut of the film and not the original, but that is truly about the only negative thing I can say about the whole experience. The music still shines, and even the SE-altered music isn't an abomination to the experience. I hope I get the chance to see TESB, ROTJ, and TFA in this setting as well! Gruesome Son of a Bitch 6,489
I like the Special Edition. Most of the changes to the desert scenes aside from the spaceport are pretty good and the CGI dogfight clips in the end battle are a highlight of the entire film. Going back to the theatrical version after watching the SE space battle, I feel like Christopher Reeve going back to the present at the end of Somewhere in Time. Of course, I view these films as they should be aka popcorn space movies for adolescents.
Chen G. 4,005
Yes, demographically that is what they were going for. There's no reason to apotheosize these films. Except for the odd Empire Strikes Back, they don't feature that many concepts of high drama or heightened emotion. They're just meant to be fun space adventures. With moments of gravity, sure, but overall their tone is dominated by "fun." I'm of two minds as for the Special Edition though. Primarily, it's a matter of etiquette: other directors offered tweaked versions of their films, but they never do it to supplant the original cut. As for the changes themselves I don't mind half of them. Even the Jabba insert was originally notorious simply for its poor CGI. The bluray version is much better. By the way, the title "A New Hope" is as much of a change as any of the others, and certainly is one of the most egregious. Originally, and appropriately, it was just "Star Wars."
