I wouldn't discard the 1996 edition, as it contains some "wrong takes" that I like and are not in the alternate section of CD2, such as the "E.T. Alone" section, "Frogs", "At Home", "Sending the Signal" and the "Bike Chase" section, simply called "Chase". And the 2002 SACD because, even though the 5.1 section is mostly front heavy, it's very nice to listen to this music on more than 2 channels. 54 minutes ago, Baby Jane Hudson said: What book? Jay 37,368
The LLL CD is 100% comprehensive, providing the proper takes used in the film for every single cue, plus every alternate recorded, all the stuff recorded just for the 1982 OST album, the ride music, etc. The only thing the 1996 and 2002 expansions contain that aren't are here are some wrong takes that the producers of those CDs used instead of the proper film takes. Jay 37,368
LLL's CE3K is similarly 100% comprehensive, there isn't a single thing on the OST LP or 1998 CD that isn't on the new CD - unless you care about the disco track. In the case of CE3K, no alternate takes exist on any prior CD, its always been the same takes in the film and on releases.

Jay 37,368
It's kind of hard for you to say that, since the new set contains music that wasn't in the film and has been sitting in a vault unheard for 40 years, so you don't know if you like it until you've heard it. Bespin 8,483
Can't we stop talking about money here? Expanded releases are a lucrative business, and in the case of John Williams who always was a "milionnaire" of records, it is especially true. Not really. I don't think you realize that a simple 2 CD set often represents years of work, and is sold in limited numbers for only $29,95. I guess the labels are turning a profit, but no one involved is getting rich from it.

Is D2-18 E.T. is Dying is presented in alternate form elsewhere on disc 1? I think E.T. Is Dying is just an early version of Stay With Me. So arguably it's Stay With Me (Alternate) but the original version had a different cue title so they retained it. I think it's also the version of the cue and track title they used on the previous score release, so they kept it for consistency.

After it was recorded, Spielberg asked for a rewrite. So almost the entire cue (the first ~90 seconds) was rewritten, and that Insert was recorded at the album recording sessions as "9M2 New Intro". So, D1T18 is 9M2 New Intro combined with the end of the original 9M2 and released as simply "Stay With Me" since that album title hadn't been used before. Popular Post The Illustrious Jerry 3,356
OVER THE MOON: E.T. the Extra Terrestrial 35th Anniversary Remastered Edition (La La Land Records) After a few weeks of warming up to this set I'm finally ready to share all my thoughts. While shipping was a bit longer than originally anticipated, it was well worth the wait. This is my first John Williams expansion, and I figure it's not a bad one to get started with, eh? Haha. The entire presentation of the discs, the inserts, the artwork, and the liner notes is phenomenal. Jim Titus' artwork is different than past covers and designs of the numerous releases this score has received, and it's probably the best. I think after enough re-releases we've gotten use to the "touching fingers in the light of the moon" and all, but if you liked that idea it's still printed onto the discs (quite nicely, I should add, as CD 2 is actually the outline of the same thing but with a constellation). Flipping over to the back, the general theme of the packaging continues. The entire track list is there to gaze at once more (as I did many times on the website while it was shipping) before I finally popped in CD 1. The first time I listened, I read the introductory notes first, then started the music, following along Mike Matessino's notes for The Film Score Presentation. Very well done on that front, although I've read and heard so much about E.T. that there weren't any surprising tidbits, just easy to follow film-to-score connections and cues. That is always welcome. I wasn't crazy about reading through the perfect third comparisons with CE3K and such, but seeing as these sets were released and probably ordered by many around the same time it makes sense as a bridge between the two. Of course, I still need to purchase the CE3K set, but I'm extremely happy with what I have. The music doesn't need a lot of explanation. This will always be, arguably, one of John Williams' magnum opus'. It is a masterpiece, whether you think it to be manipulating or not. CD 1 is basically a perfect listening experience. Beginning with the eerie Main Title, and into Far From Home / E.T. Alone, one of my favourite cues of the film, opening with the Call motif and exhibiting one of the more action-entailing themes of the score- the Keys theme, which I quite enjoy. The next many tracks follow Elliott meeting E.T., and progress upon a few leitmotifs while introducing a few more. E.T. and Elliott Get Drunk is very fun and comical. The Magic of Halloween contains the always smile-inducing cameo of Yoda's theme. At Home might just be one of my favourite cues as well- it's very calm and melodious. Of course, the greatest back-to-back-to-back in film score history is probably The Rescue and Bike Chase, The Departure, and the lovely End Credits.Just under twenty minutes, the finale of this score is legendary. I've heard it many times before, but it was certainly very special hearing it again in culmination with the rest of the set. I've always loved the piano rendition of the Friendship theme in End Credits, and the effortless cycling and shifting (two puns there) of themes in The Rescue and Bike Chase gave me the chills. It's just such wonderful music. CD 2 begins with the remastered OST from the 1982 album. It's a pretty good album, and the remastered sound is top-notch quality. Adventure on Earth arranges parts of the finale sequence quite well. The alternates and additional music are the tracks I've listened to the least, naturally, but they are a testament to the definitive nature and high quality of this release. In conclusion, I must say that La La Land Records have really impressed me. I've always enjoyed hearing about these sets, but to actually order, receive and immerse myself in one of them for the first time has been a pleasure.
