No, you both have it wrong!  John whistles the scores to a massive team of ghostwriters who go wherever he goes, always at the ready to transcribe whatever comes into his mind!

It might be something form Star Wars Jedi: fallen Order, the new video game. I don't know who is working on that score but definitely that clip sounds closer to a VG than a John Williams score...

And this is a more complete version of The Last Jedi with all the blanks and microedits filled in by the OST (plus alternates and concert suites relegated to the end as bonuses, like a Matessino expansion). 2h47m in duration.

DrTenma got a reaction from JoeinAR in What are your top 5 John Williams scores?
Ranking is always hard for me but here it goes:

    Williams:
    1- Empire Strikes Back
    2- Jaws
3- Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban
4- Raiders of the Lost Ark
    5- Superman

Non-Williams (this is even harder, there are too many for just choosing 5)
1- The Perfume (Johnny Klimek, Reinhold Heil & Tom Tykwer)
    2- King Kong (Max Steiner)
    3- Psycho (Bernard Herrmann)
    4- Under Fire (Jerry Goldsmith)
5- Gods and Monsters (Carter Burwell)

    Here’s a really awful mock-up I just made: https://www.dropbox.com/s/c17ivqdrlo0uwix/Star Wars.m4a?dl=0

Just guessing on the tempo, but I can’t recall any where in episodes 7 or 8 where this theme has this syncopated bass part, or is played by muted trumpets (and possibly muted horns?).

    Curious what @Falstaft thinks…

DrTenma reacted to Chen G. in Did the inclusion of The Emperor’s Theme in TLJ foreshadow the return of Palpatine?
I knew it was a matter of time until someone asked this.

I always took the use of the Emperor’s theme in The Last Jedi to be a wink and a nod. Just like his use of the Death Star motif for the cloth-iron. It’s intentionally self-referential.

I don’t think anyone working on The Last Jedi had any concept of the return of Palpatine, least of all Williams. It’s not even established that he will indeed return. My money’s still on the plot hinging on some Mcguffin that was in his possession during the time of the earlier films, a lineage of his, etcetra - not on him actually returning in the flesh, which would be awfully idiotic.

DrTenma got a reaction from Not Mr. Big in How would you rank The Force Awakens among the Star Wars prequel scores?
I prefer the Force Awakens over any of the precuel scores. IMHO the thematic material is stronger and I enjoy the action pieces more. It would be something as: 1. TFA, 2. TPM, 3. RotS and 4. AotC.

DrTenma reacted to crumbs in Star Wars: Episode IX - Early Score Predictions Thread
And the TLJ recording was in the mix at some point in post-production (as evidenced by the alternate opening scene on the Bluray). So someone decided late in the game to switch them out (could it be anyone other than Williams?) It's just such a shame because the mixing matches the rest of TLJ's recording.

I really love the velvety string section at 0:07, plus whatever the instrument at 0:13 is, it's much more prominent here than TFA's version.

But at least it's not a prequel situation where they didn't bother recording it at all for 2+3. I guess we'll eventually have the TLJ recording once MM gets around to sequel trilogy expansions, so at least there's that.

I think the end credit suite will be an edit of all the previous 9 end credits lasting 45 minutes long and ending where the suite begins with that trumpet fanfare so can be played in a loop.

DrTenma reacted to Lewya in The Academy has announced the shortlist of 15 scores for best score
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced the shortlists for several categories for the 91st Academy Awards, including Best Original Score and Best Original Song. The nominations will be announced on January 22, 2019 and the awards show will be held on February 24.

Fifteen scores will advance in the Original Score category for the 91st Academy Awards. One hundred fifty-six scores were eligible in the category. Members of the Music Branch vote to determine the shortlist and the nominees.

The scores listed in alphabetical order by film title are:

“Annihilation” – Geoff Barrow & Ben Salisbury
“Avengers: Infinity War” – Alan Silvestri
“The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” – Carter Burwell
    “Black Panther” – Ludwig Goransson
    “BlacKkKlansman” – Terence Blanchard
“Crazy Rich Asians” – Brian Tyler
“The Death of Stalin” – Christopher Willis
“Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” – James Newton Howard
    “First Man” – Justin Hurwitz
“If Beale Street Could Talk” – Nicholas Britell
“Isle of Dogs” – Alexandre Desplat
“Mary Poppins Returns” – Marc Shaiman
“A Quiet Place” – Marco Beltrami
“Ready Player One” – Alan Silvestri
    “Vice” – Nicholas Britell

Adés didn't make the cut apparently. No Red Sparrow or the other better Desplat score either - are there any other "snubs"? No Greenwood or Yorke either. No Giacchino.

DrTenma reacted to Wizarding News in RUMOR: John Williams plans to retire in 2019
I, too, initially thought this was just a rehash of JW's own proclamations that he would retire from Star Wars.

But I reconfirmed with my source, and (ungendered pronoun 'they') said it was not just about Star Wars.

I don't doubt that Williams will happily score Star Wars IX and Indy 5 if everything lines up, as is his announced plan.

I am Wizarding News, who reported on what the source told us, yes.

A little background: We are one of the oldest Harry Potter fan sites on the internet (16 years now!). J.K. Rowling endorsed us as one her favorites, and we've reported exclusives before. (The biggest of which was breaking the story that Universal was developing the Wizarding World theme park all the way back in 2007.)

On a personal level, I played trumpet myself for over 10 years, drum major'ed my school's marching band, and am a HUGE John Williams fan to boot. I would like nothing more for him to keep scoring films indefinitely. I'm very sorry if anyone was offended.

The only negative aspect of the box set is the fact that the jewel cases are cheaper and more fragile than the ones they use normally. That might be the reason why several people have got it with broken teeth. They should have gone that (last) extra mile.

OK so I just received my box, opened it and started reading one of the booklets, looks wonderful and all !
Then I play the first CD and... it only has 9 tracks, with one being 28 minutes-long !!
So I listen to it, sounds like it is CD1 but with an extremely weird sequencing, and tracks 8 and 9 not working properly..
I then try the 2nd one, and... it has the exact same thing 😶
    I then try CD3, 4, 5, 6, 7 ...guess what 😯

    I got 7 CDs of this :

Gonna email LLL right way about it, but did this happen to anyone else here ?
