While I don't collect vinyl myself, I do hope there is one for TLW, and JP3 someday. Neither ever got one, unlike all the other Jurassic scores. It would be cool to see what Mondo would come up with.

So I'm NOT just hearing things, right? It IS note-per-note. Is it possible Cannes only had access to an early clip to showcase that had tracked music? Or the film itself simply tracked it? I just find it bizarre Williams did it this way himself, unless he did it as a way to kind of connect the series as a whole since this is the last one? I don't know how I feel about that if so...

Holy shit we're getting a new Indy score next month

Williams is 91 years old, and action music is unbelievably strenuous to compose. What we're hearing here serves the scene expertly, it creates continuity with the other scores, and offers a bit of a reprieve for Williams (and/or Ross, who we can assume is involved in a similar way here as he was with the ST). And there's precedent in KOTCS anyway of this kind of thing, with the Gunpowder (ROTLA: Discovering the Seriph), Corpse/Betrayal (TLC: Kazim and the Rats!), and Warehouse Escape (ROTLA: Flight to Freedom) cues. The score to DoD is going to be absolutely marvelous, calm down folks. 

The bits lifted from TLC and KOTCS sound like they were re-recorded (and perhaps a little reworked) to me, meaning they are part of the actual underscore for this sequence. So, note-for-note, from a certain point of view.

Actually my guess for “I hope it will be well received for both what it is as well as for where it might potentially lead” is indeed the Peter Bernstein Ewok scores…

Well tracks 10-21 on CD 2 of Intrada's release actually features the entire contents of the Bay Cities Album. From what I recall, the album version as presented on CD 2 is exactly the same mixing and sound quality as it is on the Bay Cities Album. So there's really no need to own that version if you have Intrada's.
 
But it is correct that the mixing of the Album is different than the "complete" version Intrada produced for CD 1 and tracks 1-9 on CD 2. And for certain tracks at least, I do prefer the Album mixing. However, over the years I think I have gotten used to Intrada's mix? Their release still has issues though. Despite what they claimed at the time, it IS missing some music, or at least film alternates. Whether the alternates were created editorially or not, maybe we'll never know, but I'd love to hear the film version of "Mombi's Awake" for example. There's definitely some differences going on in the film, there.

Oh I completely agree! And even though I personally believe that it truly is missing music (inserts that were just not located with the sessions, kind of like how the Mombi Mandolin #1 was also not found but they used a film stem for in their extra tracks), it has almost every bit of unreleased music from the film. I think there are only really three parts from the film where music is still missing (when Dorothy arrives at Oz, the Mombi Awake/Gump scene, and the moments directly after the Nome King is vanquished). But this is also countered by actually quite a bit of music that is NOT in the final film that no one has ever heard before until now. The latter portion of "Upstairs At Dr. Worley's" for example seems to originally score Dorothy as she is being tied down to the gurney and then wheeled to where the electro shock therapy is to take place. It's CREEPY music, and if you try to sync it up to the movie, it really adds to the scene! There are various bits and pieces of unused material like this spread throughout the album, including another lengthy bit after the Nome King is vanquished where the music takes on a dark and almost creepy version of the "Kansas" music (likely the original version of the music later re-done with the inserts or whatever happened). On top of that, certain tracks are film/alternate performances compared to the album version. While I actually prefer the album takes over them because they are better performances, it is still nice to finally have those, especially since the album tracks are still on this release and still sound great.
So yeah, still a lot to praise for this release. If there are still other detractors beyond missing music, it would be the pointlessness of some of the bonus tracks. Two of them are exactly the same tracks as the album ones included later on the very same CD. The mixing doesn't even sound too different on them to me, which makes it just feel that much more redundant. Mixing is probably the other minor issue. Most of the music sounds pretty stellar, but some tracks like "Flight in the Storm" just has such a flat mix to me compared to how lively it sounds on the album. I believe this may also be a alternate performance (possibly the film version), which may be why. For example, the organ feels like it is shoved behind all of the other instruments and can barely be heard well at all; whereas on the album version it is almost front and center to a very scary effect. Luckily, again, the OST version is still here, but it can't be just merely moved in programming because the main score version has the previously unreleased music "Headphones" tacked onto the beginning, so one would have to make an edit to change things around properly. The same goes for the End Credits track, which for whatever reason isn't labeled as unreleased when that entire track is (film version), it just isn't mixed in nearly as an engaging way.
Well, those are my thoughts on it anyway. It is a flawed release, but the pros far outweigh the cons. Anyone who is not a huge fan or as familiar with the film as I am will fall in love with this release even more. And given how long it has been out of print, just being able to get this at all right now is a huge service to fans, especially with the beautiful liner notes and-- hey! Someone scribbled all over mine! I better send it back!
