Popular Post Amer 2,210
Just saw an interesting reference statement about the upcoming LLL's release of Close Encounters in introspective celebration article at digitalbits.com: STILL WATCHING THE SKIES: REMEMBERING “CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND” ON ITS 40TH ANNIVERSARY by Michael Coate. "Mike Matessino produced, mixed, mastered and wrote the liner notes for the Close Encounters of the Third Kind: 40th Anniversary Remastered Edition CD release, due this fall from La-La Land Records." Also transcribed is the panel Q& A discussion with Mike Matessino, Michael Klastorin and Laurent Bouzereau. http://thedigitalbits.com/columns/history-legacy-showmanship/ce3k-40th?showall=1#.Wg459b3SU7Y.facebook Just reaffirms that we will see this release in coming weeks for sure.!! Disco Stu 15,501
What do we make of this? Quote Bouzereau: I have a lot to say about this… But I’ll summarize it by mentioning that I was filming John conducting a suite from Close Encounters at a private session last year, and we were all in tears. What is this private session? Is there a release I'm forgetting about? Do you think the LLL includes something actually newly recorded? It was probably at the same UCLA sessions as the S/W Collaboration Part III recordings? Am I going to delete all of this when someone points out something I forgot about? Probably. Popular Post crumbs 14,696
Quote CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND: 40th ANNIVERSARY REMASTERED EDITION (2-CD SET) LLLCD 1433 Music by John Williams Limited Edition of 5000 Units RETAIL PRICE: $29.98 La-La Land Records, Sony Music and Columbia Pictures present CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND: 40th ANNIVERSARY REMASTERED LIMITED EDITION, a special 2-CD set featuring a newly restored and remastered presentation of Academy Award-Winning composer John Williams’ (JAWS, STAR WARS, SCHINDLER’S LIST) original motion picture score to the 1977 landmark feature film CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Richard Dreyfuss and Teri Garr. Maestro Williams’ score personifies this classic film’s boundless wonder – searching through, and communicating with, the deep expanses of space as it also explores the unknowable mysteries of the human soul. This deluxe 2-CD edition, meticulously produced, mixed and mastered by Mike Matessino, in consultation with the composer and director, was inspired by the discovery that Williams had originally planned the soundtrack as a 75-minute double LP. Disc One of this presentation takes its lead from that initial intent, expanding and organizing the score as a grand symphony contained on a single disc. Disc Two offers an equally fresh experience of the score, comprised of discrete versions of cues, alternates and selections not heard on Disc One, plus many of the 1977 album tracks, as well as previously unreleased source music recorded for the film. Matessino’s exclusive liner notes explore this iconic, majestic score, while Jim Titus’ art design handsomely recalls all those joyous feelings generated by one of the greatest science fiction film experiences of all time. This is a limited edition release of 5000 units. BloodBoal 7,541
Matessino previously said that for this release, they wanted to try something a bit different than the usual chronological release, and instead wanted to favour the listening experience first and foremost, so that's why the program isn't presented chronologically. BloodBoal 7,541
Managed to find the Matessino quote in LeBlanc's interview: Quote We already know your next Williams/Spielberg expanded CD release – Close Encounters of the Third Kind, coming soon from La-La Land Records. What can you tell us about this release? Well, you asked me earlier about chronological assembly and interestingly Close Encounters is one where we’re departing from that a bit, although it will be possible to create one in a playlist. There was a lot of conversation about it because as part of working on the score I also got involved in the work on the film itself for the restoration as well as conversations about doing it in concert, which are still going on. I don’t want to steal any thunder from E.T. but I’m very excited about this one. I’ve taken a bit of a gamble with it assembly-wise, but the Maestro cares a lot about this score and he really liked what I proposed and I hope that the fans will embrace how I approached it. It really is a masterpiece and functions differently from almost any other film score. For that reason I wanted to see if I could free it from the movie a bit and work as a purely musical experience. But I wanted to make sure that listeners could also work with it and personalize it. I liken it to Roy Neary working with the mountainous shape until he feels he gets it “right.”

crumbs 14,696
Last time I listened to the score in chronological form, I found it pretty disjointed. So I'm actually happy to see it's a hybrid 'Matessino/Williams' that prioritized the listening experience while also being complete (for the purists). Great compromise! I wonder if Titanic coming out now after 20 years is a result of decreased licence fees, having hit the 2 decade age mark? Seems like a lot of expansions come out around that age. Popular Post Jay 39,156
The presentation might look weird at first glance, but its brilliant to listen to. It's a similar situation to ET, where the complete score is too long to fit on one disc, and the shortest cues are on disc 2 instead. If you notice, the first disc is only non-chronological in the first half; Once they escape and make their way up Devil's Tower its all straightforward. Cues combined on disc one stem from how Williams wanted the music presented back in 1977 for his planned 2LP set and really improve the listening experience by replacing abrupt endings with segues to music that fits perfectly in tone. Disc 2 is like an alternate presentation of the score again, starting at the beginning and ending at the end, and including many alternate takes of what you hear on disc 1, plus much of the same music that was combined with something else on disc 1 now in their own track so one can easily make their own C&C playlists if desired, as well as some of the cue combos from the final 1LP, too... and all the source music! It's really best to not worry about all that stuff though, and just put in disc 1 and press play, and then put in disc 2 and press play. Both are great listening experiences, and you should really experience this masterpiece of a score that way at least once to see what Williams and Matessino have cooked up here. If its not to your liking, a C&C playlist is super simple to create. Will, Ricard, Pieter Boelen and 6 others

Holko 10,079
That's pretty awesome. Aside from seeing the movie once and having the 10-minute suite and The Dialogue on the Spielberg set, this'll be my first time listening to any of this music, so I love how it'll be a nice presentation, while still allowing the potential for a future C&C arrangement when I get into it more, as long as we'll have a guide in the booklet (or here). phbart 623
1 hour ago, azahid said: So I hope we will have a new Matessino Interview via Jay after the set is released. No this year, I'm afraid. The trend is, if you have substantial JW expanded/remastered releases handled by MM in a year period, then an interview will come november or december of that year covering all of them. That's why we had one in 2015 (Home Alone, Jaws 2, Jaws...) and then only in 2017. Which is why the 2016 JP release (the only MM expasion from that year, if my memory serves me correctly) was covered this year only, as a Jay probably knew we were gonna have substantial MM expasions in 2017, so it was eaiser to cover all of them in one interview. But hey, CE3K was meant to be a 2LP set back in '77??? Damn you Arista Records for screwing this up!
