But JW still nabs the top spot, if memory serves, with Star Wars. For me, I feel I hardly have any time to discover new composers when there is so much I need to catch up on with my mainstays (Elfman, Horner, Desplat, JNH, Menken and, above all, JW). Thanks to this forum, I've become increasingly familiar with Goldsmith and feel he's about to become a mainstay too. That's enough for me right now. The oscars are mostly limited to stuff the academy thinks it's fashionable to nominate whereas the Saturns include the fun popcorn stuff that everyone secretly prefers. In fact I noticed that my favourite Elfman, Sleepy Hollow won in 1999. Good call. The oscars that year are basically a list of the most respected films. Popular Post karelm 2,915
1. I start off with the AFI list to see what composers I don't yet know. 2. I then check with who was nominated for the last few years of Academy Awards but also Grammy's 3. I then run an algorithm I've created that checks to see if the score was mentioned by Bespin. The more excited he is about the score or composer, I deduct more points from the score because Bespin is never right or was probably drunk while posting. 4. I then run a randomizer on Bespin deduction because now that he knows I deduct points based on his opinion, he'll try to rig the system by flooding the forum with false reviews intending to mislead my algorithm. 5. I then throw away steps 1 through 4 because I realize my method is too rigid and just listen to music sometimes from films I've never heard of. I will also listen to opinions from other artists I respect about something being worth hearing. Edmilson, Fabulin, Jay and 4 others

Bespin 8,484
I read some comments about Danny Elfman on this forum and they were sometimes pretty rude. For my part, I love Elfman, I discovered him with Batman and still think it's one of his best scores. Let's see what my method list as essentials Danny Elfman scores... Danny Elfman Batman (AFI, Grammy Award Nominee) Edward Scissorhands (AFI, Grammy Award Nominee) Men in Black (Saturn winner, Grammy Award Nominee, Academy Awards nominee) Spider-Man (Saturn winner, Grammy Award Nominee) The Nightmare Before Christmas (Saturn winner) Mars Attacks! (Saturn winner) Sleepy Hollow (Saturn winner) Frankenweenie (Saturn winner) Big Fish (Grammy Award Nominee, Academy Awards nominee) Milk (Grammy Award Nominee, Academy Awards nominee) Beetlejuice (Saturn nominee) Dolores Claiborne (Saturn nominee) The Frighteners (Saturn nominee) Hulk (Saturn nominee) Siper-Man 2 (Saturn nominee) Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Saturn nominee) Oz The Great and Powerfull (Saturn nominee) Dumbo (Saturn nominee) Alice in Wonderland (Grammy Award Nominee) Dick Tracy (Grammy Award Nominee) Planet of the Apes (Grammy Award Nominee) Good Will Hunting (Academy Awards nominee) Bayesian

Thor 7,520
I'm not sure that I would use the Saturn Awards (or, in fact, any award) for a guide as to what my favourite Elfmans are. That seems weird; trust your own taste, not what some award body says. I guess if I were to select a top 10, it would be something like this: 1. THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS 2. Edward Scissorhands 3. Batman Returns (rather than Batman) 4. Sommersby 5. Black Beauty 6. Standard Operating Procedure/The Unknown Known 7. Midnight Run 8. Wisdom 9. Big Fish 10. Jay 37,373
Standard Operating Procedure and The Unknown Known are two different documentary films by Errol Morris that Elfman scored, using a similar style for both scores. They don't share any thematic material that I know of

Yes, tied in quality and more or less within the same idiom, Serenada Schizophrana-style. I found it hard to separate them. Incidentally, they're both my favourite scores of each respective year. Bespin 8,484
Well in my case, the Saturn Awards for Best score is more relevant than the Academy Awards, for the kind of music/movie I like.

Disco Stu 15,495
This one goes out to you @Bespin. You're facing the final curtain, but you did it your way. Quote And now, the end is near And so I face the final curtain My friends, I'll say it clear I'll state my case of which I'm certainI've lived a life I have a soundtrack collection that's full I traveled each and every highway messageboard But more, much more than this I did it my way Regrets, I've had a few But then again, too few to mention I did bought what CDs I had to And saw it listened through them without exemption I planned each chartered course composer Each careful step along the byway But more, much more than this I did it my way Bespin
