No Yoda? but if he is like 700 something years old by the series timeline... and he appears in the high republic cartoons already. (i think he will be used in the series, maybe as a hook to get interest in the second season.)

It's more likely he will be mentioned but not a main player, which I can respect greatly

 

It's basically the Andor approach of wanting to focus on new characters than mess with the legacy stuff too much

Mon Mothma is an incredibly minor character in the context of the movies and even in the expanded universe in terms of how fleshed out she is

 

When writers talk about wanting to avoid legacy characters they're basically trying to avoid very established and storied ones

The HR comics go out of their way to give Yoda a reason to not be in the story in Phase I, I think he returns in Phase III though.

I don't hear Zimmer in that excerpt, and I don't think 'very heavy and brooding' means it's outside the musical realm of Williams entirely. Those are the words I'd use to describe the KOTOR 2 soundtrack and that sounds nothing like Zimmer

He could be correct but I also wouldn't discount the possibility of musical illiteracy. Have seen some bizarre takes on what sounds like Star Wars in the community. Lest we forget all the times people praised Williams for his trailer music

That's part of the preview that was shown after Episode I in theatres.

 

I thought I was watching a scene from 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon', and was expecting the music to go full Tan Dun.

What does JWFan think of the first two episodes?

 

I don't know when I'll watch.  Most of these Disney+ Star Wars or Marvel shows I start watching around halfway through the season and then catch up by the end.  I don't feel any of them are good enough that watching 1 per week is ideal, like with HOTD or Severance for example

Went to a screening of the first two episodes last night. It’s REALLY good. Very Star Wars in feel, atmosphere, and even music (though I heard no Williams themes, he definitely felt emulated). Already memorable characters I felt connected to.

 

Only nitpick so far is that the show has a few too many of the classic Star Wars “Power Point” transitions between scenes. One happens literally in the middle of a big fight scene to cut to what a nearby character is doing, which killed any urgency in the editing for a sec.

 

We also have our titular Acolyte mind probed for a moment, which you’d think they would’ve done to our main character who’s accused of a big crime, but maybe that’s too invasive?

 

Anyway, really, really good Star Wars. Very excited to see where it goes, especially if it does start leading into the bigger picture of the Sith’s return that gets us to where we are at the start of TPM with Sidious really starting to pave the way to the fall of the Jedi (whose arrogance already has great touches in these two Acolyte episodes).

 

P.S. They made the Neimoidian’s voices a bit less racist. 😅

It was never just Disney, but then they're also the ones spreading it to a wider audience, instead of merely being material you read in a novel. And given the amount being made, they might as well be as throwaway as most of the old EU.

There is literally nothing in these episodes that takes away the mystique. In fact, there are a lot of new questions so far (regarding the plot of the show).

I found the first two episodes enjoyable. Nothing great but not bad either. I think the story is interesting and so are most the characters. The sets and effects all looked great. I like that there were a lot of alien species but it felt more like Guardians of the Galaxy than Star Wars to me for some reason. I didn’t think the music really stood out so nothing really memorable there for me.

I told you this would happen...Star Wars fans can be shockingly musically illiterate despite consuming tonnes of Star Wars material

That was the most Star Wars-y soundtrack any of the TV shows has ever had, I absolutely loved the music. Calling it Hans Zimmer-esque instead of Williams-esque is a cracked out take, one that you could probably already tell was bunkum if you're familiar with Michael Abels at all

I find this show interesting because it's very well-made but it's not overly flashy or impressive like Andor, but in a way that's refreshing? It feels like this should be the base-line quality for all the Star Wars shows, it just gives me the vibes of a nice EU story that's not amazing but also fits very seamlessly in the universe and gets what makes Star Wars tick

Although perhaps that's too early to say given I've only seen two episodes, but the opening hasn't filled me with the dread of 'oh no this is going to be horrible' like every other Star Wars show recently except for Andor

I like Master Sol quite a bit, as well as Yord who feels like the Jedi Order's equivalent of Syril. Got a good chuckle at how keen he was from steaming his Jedi uniform to taking every opportunity he could to ignite his lightsaber

Funny looking back at this prediction considering there were times where the soundtrack really reminded me of KOTOR 2 with that more brooding take on Williams Star Wars, particularly where it got quite atmospheric when Osha was on the crashed ship on the ice planet

Episode 1 & 2

 

I thought this was really strong.

Excellent writing, with a great set up with a mystery, character work, reveals and twists.

 

The fights were very well choreographed and shot. I liked how there weren't too many cuts and how the fights also told a story. The way they show the fighting style of the Jedi was really interesting. It's mostly defense and they only take out their lightssabers when they plan to kill.

 

Performances are great. Amandla Stenberg does a really wonderful job, with a role that could've easily become a bit of a mess. So well done to her.

Lee Jung-Jae is also really great, and I loved his fight scene with Stenberg. So cool.

 

Then for a bit of spoilers, for now I'll put it in a spoiler block because it's quite a big one.

I don't like it, but it's a brilliant move to kill of Carrie-Ann Moss before the title sequence even happened. It let's you know the stakes of the show and that it's not afraid to take risks.

 

Moss is for this show what Drew Barrymoore was for Scream. They advertised her a lot and therefor you get the sense of the power and gravitas she holds as a character. And there is something in the back of you mind that goes "It's Trinity, she'll live". Amd then she doesn't, and it's a real shocker.

 

But I feel the rest of episodes were soo good that it didn't ruin the show or put a stamp on it.

 

I'm very curious to see what these 4 Jedi did and why Mae wants them dead. I'm sure we'll see Moss again in flashbacks, but for now I'm in shock, I don't like it because I love Moss so much, but's it's really brilliant.

 

Abels' music was fantastic I thought. His action music was incredibly strong and had a bit of mannerisms from Williams without quoting him. Really well done.

 

That's a bit of the feel I get from the show as a whole. The creators love Star Wars and really respect it. They are playing in the same ball park, but don't rely on easter eggs or known characters. There's a few lines that I got a kick out of as a fan, but I love how the show feelz very much it's own thing.
