My copy from MusicBox (along with a Desplat DVD) has made it to Cincinnati Ohio! DHL indicates 4 days (Nov 30), but I suspect it will be a day or two sooner. Doesn't matter since I will be out of town when it arrives. But happy to know the Atlantic has been crossed!

He wrote the most emblematic music in the history of cinema, by Steven Spielberg, Oliver Stone, Mark Rydell, Robert Altman, George Lucas and Brian de Palma. But he also composed around forty so-called classical works including concertos and chamber music.

Is there a Williams sound?

If John Williams is a continent, certain territories are still unknown to the general public: "By making this box set, I wanted to show that it is much more unexpected than one might think." Passionate about jazz since his youth, John Williams has never ceased to synthesize jazz and symphonic music in his creations. But his most striking particularity would perhaps be his transversality and his in-depth knowledge of all musical genres: "Suddenly he can tell you about Jules Massenet, his favorite composer, and another of his passions is Edgar Varèse. But there is a big canyon between these two languages."

 

At the start of his career, John Williams was a pianist for Hollywood film studios, notably for Henry Mancini, until he was asked to write music for a TV series, where he learned a method adapted to economic constraint, and finding your own language. But his “sound” was truly born following his meeting with the filmmaker Mark Rydell, for whom he composed the music for four films. From this collaboration followed that with Steven Spielberg from 1973, before his explosion at the age of 43: "Like Stravinsky, like Picasso, there are Williams sounds, he says that his writing of the 1960s is not that of the 1970s nor that of the 1980s. His life was made up of alternating between cinema and concert conducting." Stéphane Lerouge also writes in his introduction to this box set, that it is the first anthology which brings together Frank Sinatra and Itzhak Perlman; Barbara Streisand and The Chiftains, Yo Yo Ma and Sting.

 

John Williams is the last great representative of a generation, still active at the age of 91. He always writes, by hand, and at the table without any software or computer. He has been saying for several years that he is going to retire, each time changing his decision. After having signed the music for Indiana Jones 5 in 2023, he is currently writing a piano concerto for the American pianist Emanuel Ax. At the same time, Steven Spielberg began producing a documentary film about his lifelong sidekick.

Although the musical is far from being a favorite of mine, I’d say The Question (and its Reprise), Am I Beautiful, Improbable As Spring, Replay The Game and So Many Other Worlds are the highlights. 

 

Sadly, the cast recording just isn’t very good as the vocal performances -though technically fine- reach several levels of pure and utter annoyance. 

 

I would really like the hear the aforementioned songs performed by a different cast. It might change my opinion of Williams’ work.

Well  - I think its a fairly good collection of SOME of JW's  film music / concert music. 

 

The presentation is superb / fantastic..  its not every day you will see and get a collection like  this.  

 

For me - the 20th disc was a must buy.....  with the songs  - especially " Make me Rainbows "  - and the song from " Daddys-gone-a-hunting " 

 

I would never ever rip the cd's into computer or something.... i am very old fashioned    .  want my music on CD

Make sure to tape the CDs after ripping them, so all the music doesn't fall out.

I should receive my box set next week, so I will compare the sound quality of some tracks to make a comparison with the best versions we already have on CD.

 

About ripping CDs, you'll find that removing the CD from those semi-book arts can be extremely risky. I highly recommend ripping your CDs once and avoiding handling them further to prevent any potential damage.

Will open it in 24 days then...

 

...and usually I put CDs from such sleeves like the SW:SE and JP2 into a separate jewel case, but not in this ... case: Too many of them and it defeats the purpose of this nice box set. I also think these are manufactured differently (by the preview looks of it), to allow for easy access (e.g. a bit more space in the sleeve)? Plus: Tiny scratches that the error correction of my player won't even need to or will handle correctly shouldn't even build up that fast in my remaining lifetime...  ...I am much more relaxed about that now.

 

Anyways ... I have to skip this thread for the next three and a half weeks, I guess. Seeyalater!
