While searching the net for "The Legend of John Williams", Google suggested "The Ballad of John Williams"...

Uncanny resemblance.

For a lover of movie music who is finally ready to discover John Williams, I would say you just need those 'extra' releases to complete this 20-CD boxset:

- Close Encounters of the Third Kind (expanded on LLL)

- Harry Potter and the sorcerer's stone (the OST as a minimum, or the Expanded HP - The John Williams Collection on LLL at best)

- Home Alone (the OST or the expansion on LLL)

- Star Wars Anthology 4-CD boxset (I know, it's now rare, but we don't have better!)

That's it!

That is an awesome message @Mr. Hooper and something I'm sure you will hold on to for many many years to come!

I did something similar with a younger friend of mine with my Superman OST when the Rhino version came out... I didn't get the cool note but the guy still has it and it's in a place of honor on his shelf... It's always fun to share the love of JW music.

Was there any info shared if "Jabba The Hutt" is the re-recording or the original recording?

I shared all the info about every track (apart from the unknown disc 20 artists) here.

If this had come out 20 years ago, I’d be all over it. But kudos to those involved with this release. It will be a nice haul for the JW fan just beginning their journey.

Kinda like the Varese Goldsmith @ Fox release.

Absolutely! And I like to think that just maybe he was in the audience for one of Williams' concerts in Japan, all grown up now...

I just realized I never knew about the Boston Pops recording of Home Alone.

Boston Pops re-recordings [SME]

12 - Somewhere in my Memory
13 - Holiday Flight
14 - Star of Bethlehem

Do they vary at all from the original soundtrack?

They are sung by an adult choir instead of a children's choir. From my point of view, everybody has forgotten about those recordings... except for the makers of that box set. :P

I've been a pretty devote fan since 1990, and these totally slipped under my radar. I just noticed they're on the Pops album Joy to the World. Ha, perhaps that's why!

They're from John's 1992 Sony album "Joy To The World", and therefore also in Sony's 20CD conductor box set

Somewhere in My Memory and Star of Bethlehem are the same as the versions on the Home Alone 2 album, as mentioned without children’s voices, which are the standard Hal Leonard Signature Editions.  Holiday Flight is a bit unique in that it uses the slightly reworked melody from HA2.

FWIW, the Boston Pops also later recorded Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas from HA2 under Keith Lockhart (the Holiday Pops album).

I see what they did there. It's a clin d'oeil to the patrol boat in 'Jaws'. lol

Carol Burnett did a nice , charming  version of "Love's  the only game in town "   (  the PETE  'N'  TILLIE  theme )  ....

I hope THAT is on the set   - ( NOT the one with Walther Matthau.....  )

In the later ... the lyrics are almost SPOKEN by Matthau .

So quite a lot of this is original OST tracks that all you proper collectors will already have, right?

Gotta say, it's quite easy to get John Williams fans to buy... basically anything :P

It's not just 'anything'; a substantial anthology like this marks an important milestone in JW's career. We thought an anthology of this magnitude could never be accomplished! That's fantastic, isn't it? Buy it, and we might get a 2nd volume!

That’s the problem with being a JW purist, we already have everything that’s been released from him.

Hmmmm...

Seems that they choose the Sinatra  version  regarding  DREAM AWAY..... ( the theme from    "....CAT DANCING " )

Always found it a bit pale .....

......at least when I compare it to the Paul Williams Version - a bit longer with more lyrics  (  Paul Williams wrote the lyrics )  - John Williams also arranged  and conducted  this version .

what do you think.....   ?

Disc 20  for me is  A-MUST-HAVE

I love the richer and more resonant sound that a full adult choir brings to a piece that is usually heard with a children's choir. Likewise with Dry Your Tears, Afrika.

agree  ....

think it is even more powerful  /stirring......

love this  version

I think/hope/suspect it’ll pair nicely with disc 2 - Party In The Moonlight - that was included with the new LLL edition of Sabrina. What a fun thing to play during a dinner party, sipping on some cocktails, smoking a cigar.

but I’m not really buying this set for the music I’m missing - I’d probably buy it even if I already did have it all.

The part I find most interesting is the thought of buying even if you already had it all.

Is there a point where existing albums could be repackaged in a way that the most hardcore physical media fans such as yourself wouldn't want it? I totally understand wanting stuff to see on your shelf, but as a fan of the music in the first instance, I've resisted quite a few times buying a 'deluxe' version of some album (often non-soundtrack) because I only wanted the two of three addtional tracks, so I just got them digitally.

Ludovico Einaudi is the worst in my case at the moment - releasing deluxe versions of a couple of albums with just a handful of remixes/bonus tracks. I actually have to check new albums from him with a bit of care that they are actually new music!
