Ecoutez le cinéma John Williams release - The Legend of John Williams 20CD box set

Williams' "Prelude and Fugue" is a great piece. Whatever this set could be, I'm very curious about it. Having just finished my 6-part John Williams television music podcast series, I wonder if that work is now completely moot and that this is a JW television box. But if it IS, it's a 'wasted project' I can live with, for sure....nothing would be make me happier (other than that STORY OF A WOMAN, obviously).

More realistically, it's some kind of reissue package with minimal interest (to me).

In either case, I've already said more than I usually do in these 'speculation threads'. I prefer to just sit back and let whatever is going to be announced, be announced. See you then!

This label's Morricone box cost 99,99€ and did not contain any unreleased music.

Yes it did, a few tracks from Orca.

Great catch, Universal!

I wondered, while discovering Morricone and Legrand's box sets, what a John Williams' box set could look like.

I wonder which soundtracks they will decide to show in their complete OST form and which ones will be shown only partially.

I am not sure what is this exactly, so feel free mods to edit the title and post accordingly.

The Ecoutez le cinéma ! series will release late November The Legend of John Williams, a 20 CD set conceived with the help of the mythical composer. The ten cues from this quiz are included in the set: will you be able to identify them?

I was able to identify them, yes, or at least recognize those that I didn't. All previously released scores (and concert works!), as far as I could tell, but should be a great introduction for people who haven't collected him all their lives, like most of us.

I don't know if I'm going to exhale a sigh of relief (because I don't have to buy it now), or be somewhat disappointed that it wasn't something more hardcore obscure and unreleased that I would have needed to buy.

I only recognised Long Goodbye (a recording that's not released on the Quartet) and Eiger Sanction. I like most of them though!

I'll check that list, but it's a bummer that neither Star Wars '77 nor CE3K are represented in their original soundtrack (OST) form, or something similar.

Anyway, it's the first comprehensive anthology that covers John Williams' entire career, and the fact that it has been done with the participation of Williams himself is GREAT.

It's an object that will look very great in my collection!

Any idea about the price?

I don't know, those italian art books are pretty heavy.

It,s hard to identify all the tracks without the movie name. I was hoping for a complete Remastered OST for the The Reivers too...

This does seem to be a pretty good overview of his career and I guess I should hold off making judgement until the pricing is out but I can't imagine this is going to be a bargain basement price so...

I do wonder who this is for?
If it's for the hardcore fan... well, like has been said we have the vast majority of this available already so it must not be for us. Think when the Elfman music box came out there was loads of stuff for us to discover in there (with a price tag to match)

Is it for the new fan? If so, will it be priced to the point where it could be a barrier for them? I always used to recomend the WIlliams Greatest hits 1969-1999 to people to start with as a sampler, this is more like a buffet.

Another thing, it seems some stuff is kind of put on discs either in themes or where it would fit and it's not like you are getting 20 discs 20 scores so you can just pull Hook of the shelf for instance. It's like its a giant compilation that we need to navigate through to find anything.

So far we can say:

Pros

  • Looks to be a decent overview including newish and old
  • Includes some pieces that aren't Super easy to get on disc

Cons

  • Seems to be somewhat mushed together (May be remedied by packaging)
  • Though it has representations of scores it's not the full OST's making those still a necessity
  • Probably going to be pricey (speculation)

Maybe I'm being too hard on it but I'm not sure I'm following the logic on why it exists yet... that said, I do want to know more! :)

I just noticed a track I have trouble identifying, on the last disc: "Come Tuesday". What is this? Is it another name for "Tuesday's Theme" from BACHELOR FLAT (well, inspired by Tuesday Weld's character in the film, it doesn't actually appear in it)?

@KittBash These Italian art boxes are designed for collectors and lovers of movie music in general, not specifically for hardcore fans. They can provide a very good introduction to a composer's music if you don't know them well. So they are both 'specialized' and 'mainstream'.

So what your sayin @Bespin is that it's a third option I hadn't even considered... got it

Nothing from Potter at all except the Mutter re-recording

No surprise since that's the only Potter material UMG owns

Um... No decent Potter presentation? Okay.

The Harry Potter music is consistently underrepresented on JW's compilations. I assume the rights are VERY expensive...

By the way, I just realized that the Cinderella Liberty OST will be COMPLETE! Finally, I will have it!

WOHHOOO!!!! :woop:

That being said, a very cool inclusion is the "Sinfonietta for Wind Ensemble", which is only available on a super rare, Japanese Deutsche Grammophon vinyl release. I don't have that in physical format myself, only an LP-to-CD transfer (and digital files, obviously).

It was also released on this Tower Records CD:

The Long Goodbye audio seems to sound like the Lou Donaldson version, for a long, long time, the only recording of the theme available.

I think this looks like a great compilation that covers so many different aspects of his long career. But it's not just a compilation of excerpts since it includes 15 soundtrack albums in their original presentation. I think anyone who doesn't own a majority of these albums should consider this set:

  • Cinderella Liberty (CD 4)
  • The River (CD 4)
  • Earthquake (almost entire album?, CD 5)
  • The Eiger Sanction (CD 6)
  • The Missouri Breaks (CD 7)
  • Jaws (CD 8)
  • Jaws 2 (CD 8)
  • E.T. (CD 9)
  • Jurassic Park (CD 10)
  • Schindler's List (CD 11)
  • Born on the Fourth of July (CD 13, without the pop songs)
  • Far and Away (CD 14, without the song "Book of Days")
  • Sabrina (CD 15)
  • Dracula (CD 16)
  • The Fury (CD 16)

It also includes Anne-Sophie Mutter's Across the Stars (CD 18, the Deluxe Edition, but without "Markings").

It looks like CD 1-2 is a compilation of Boston Pops recordings.

Kudos for being able to present a fairly good summary of JW's work on 20 CDs!

Yes, finally there are many OSTs featured in their complete form: Cinderella Liberty, Earthquake, The Eiger Sanction, Missouri Breaks, Jaws, Jaws 2, E.T., Jurassic Park, Schindler's List, Far and Away, SAbrina, Dracula, The Fury, etc.

I imagine it will be between €70 & €100, considering the 21-CD Decca Complete Philips Recordings Box Set is currently at €65 on German Amazon.

That's very sad! Maybe on the 2nd volume?

This does not feel like it's planned to have a 2nd volume. But since you apparently have both Morricone volumes, @Bespin, did you feel like those were planned to be in 2 parts. I thought the first Morricone volume had most of the well-known stuff.

The 2nd Morricone boxset was not planned as a "sequel"; rather, it represents a second pass on the work of a lifetime, allowing to feature other scores.

@Jay I'm not an expert of The Towering Inferno score, but it seems the track name "The rescue of Angela and The Blocked Door" and others are from the score, not the OST for this one?

Wow you're right, those are track titles from Mike's LLL edition, not the OST album or the FSM edition.

Same with The Poseidon Adventure - those are from Mike's LLL edition, not the FSM or earlier LLL edition

I love the pairing of "Cinderella Liberty" and "The River" on the same CD, two Mark Rydell movies.

Hoping that in a hypothetical Volume 2, we'll see a pairing of "The Reivers" and "The Cowboys"...

Excellent! If only.

And The Plainsman, Wagon Train, and The Rare Breed together.  Though I must admit the suite to the Rare Breed is perhaps the best and most interesting representation of the score. I have the film. The score is extremely repetitive, with no variations on the main theme, just copy and paste of the same cue.

The CD dedicated to the collaboration with Oliver Stone is very strong too!
