The thematic material is pretty great.  Rise of Skywalker is one of his best themes of recent years

I relistened to TRoS the other day and it doesn't do anything for me.
Not one bit of it excites me.
Except the action version of the Emperor's Theme from the FYC and the Rey Training cue.
But on the whole it's just laaame.
I am so scared Indy 5 will follow suit.
KotCS wasn't too great either; not even in its complete form.

    Come on!
    Indy deserves better!

    Saw the movie on Monday.

If I had to compare the score to any of the previous parts in the series, I'd pick  "The Last Crusade". There was also really one leading new theme (Grail) and the compelling action music that dominated the score. There is even more of it here. Helena's Theme we hear more often in the film itself in adventure arrangements (that are really great) than the one we know from last concerts. It's only in its full "Golden Age" glory during the end credits.

But there is a lot going on here, it is dynamic and dense, because there is no shortage of action in the movie. There are also some musical surprises. In one of the scenes I heard something that would fit to "Dirty Harry" or "Bullitt" or other Shiffrin's scores form 70's. Very unusual for Williams.  There's another theme, more exotic, similar to "Tintin". And a lot of "Raider's March" and twice

The music is very intense, just like "The Last Crusade" mixed with "Tintin". And sometimes it rushes like "The Lost World". The music accompanying action scenes, with motifs accompanying the antagonists, is very intense and the whole score is very "busy" , if I may use such a word. Williams had a lot to do here. And must have had fun!

And there is theme related to the McGuffin - very simple one.

I can't wait to hear the score from the album and I have no doubt that it will be a great listening experience.

Williams and Ross are listed as conductors.

And the movie itself? Without giving away any spoilers, I really liked it. A lot of humor, lots of action, with a solid emotion in the background. There were moments that really surprised me. The biggest acting star here is indeed the fantastic Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

Can't wait to see it again!

JW's hometown orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, has a great lineup of JW concerts in the next season including E.T. in concert conducted by Dudamel, Hollywood film music curated by Johnny, Superman LTP and something called Harry Potter Grand Suite.

I think his last gem so far is the entire sequel trilogy, which is excellent from start to finish.

I’m not sure I like the attitude emanating from this thread. After everything JW has given us in his eight-decade-spanning career, hasn’t he earned the benefit of the doubt? Can’t we wait until we see the film or listen to the OST before worrying that JW has somehow let us down? And even if it turns out a couple minutes in his two-hour pencil-on-paper score are lifted, does that diminish the fact that that lifted music stands head and shoulders above what nearly anyone else on the planet could write?

We continue to get so much from the man and somehow it’s never quite enough. Fucking ingrates.

Im sorry, what? The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi have some outstanding action music. A little different from his older style, but still very good. Before that, The BFG has writing every bit as intricate and intense as any action score, just not as loud. He doesn’t deliver four of these a year anymore, but he’s still got it.

Williams is 91 years old, and action music is unbelievably strenuous to compose. What we're hearing here serves the scene expertly, it creates continuity with the other scores, and offers a bit of a reprieve for Williams (and/or Ross, who we can assume is involved in a similar way here as he was with the ST). And there's precedent in KOTCS anyway of this kind of thing, with the Gunpowder (ROTLA: Discovering the Seriph), Corpse/Betrayal (TLC: Kazim and the Rats!), and Warehouse Escape (ROTLA: Flight to Freedom) cues. The score to DoD is going to be absolutely marvelous, calm down folks.

I voted for 5 stars. The brilliant music with the movie, never listened the album through, not very interesting and quite a bad sound quality. The main title is very effective(three notes btw) but in the concerts it is very awkward, like ha haa haa. Out To Sea is amazing in the concert hall.

Look back in 1982 I conducted a similar poll. I said I would wait for the release of E.T. the Extraterrestrial. Folks said and I quote " I seriously doubt this score for E.T. will rival ESB or Raiders of the Lost Ark." John has proven the skeptics wrong before.
