Popular Post Quintus 5,399
Alexcremers seems obsessed with talking down TGTBATU on here, he's been at it for years actually. I'd say he's just as likely to reply to mention of that movie in a thread as he is to Blade Runner. It's as if the movie being universally beloved has always irritated him or something. TGTBATU is a long film and a bit of a slog to get through in places, but I can still think of loads of memorable moments peppered throughout it from beginning to end (which is what makes the film 'great'): Tuco browses pistols in the gun store; the bath scene; Blondie and Tuco take on Angel Eyes' men (with Ennio underscore); Tuco tracks Blondie's camp spots and closes him down with a still lit cigar bud; the desert torture scene (with THE definitive desert thirst soundtrack); the soldiers' flogging scene with hymnal accompaniment; the bridge explosives scene; sharing a smoke with the dying confederate soldier. And then the climax (the movie's most famous sequence). People tend to really remember really great movie finales, that isn't anything particularly unusual, and this one is one of the very best cinema has to offer (no mean feat). There are a few other extended moments in there which slow the experience down somewhat for me personally (I could do without the Tuco's holy man brother scene for eg; even if it's commendable for its character development value), but when all is said and done these parts don't exactly ruin it and one could easily argue that they add to the overall sweep of the story (it's a really simple but really engrossing one). It's perfectly natural and obvious to me why people fixate on this film's ending: it's deeply rewarding and satisfying, for a start. But to suggest it's the only thing worth watching the film for is simply untrue, if you ask me. John 2,032
Someone made a site where you can explore individual frames from several critically acclaimed, visually interesting movies. He started out exclusively featuring Kubrick films, but has since branched out and added other films like The Godfather, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Blade Runner 2049, and La La Land. There is also a "grid" feature that can be used to further examine the composition and layout of a frame. Naïve Old Fart 9,528
2049. The new fragrance, by Paco Rabane. Although I much admire Deakins' work, he tried a little too hard, with this one. It's as if he was trying to impress people. I didn't get that, with Cronenweth.

It's because the images are very clean and clear, which is something both Villeneuve and Deakins like. Scott, at the time, went for a very busy look, filling and layering the stage with lots of props.

It's not a copy and yet there's enough references to the first movie to make a visual link. Though, I have to say, the lighting in the fast food place where officer K is being approached by three woman is of questionable quality. Like a cheap TV show trying to be Blade Runner-ish. If I was on the set, I would have said: Denis, this is Blade Runner, you'll have to try harder. https://screenmusings.org/movie/blu-ray/Blade-Runner-2049/images/Blade-Runner-2049-0500.jpg

It's from this, which I finally have on Blu-ray now (the picture below is a still from my copy): Excellent quality release, the image is mostly very good (though much more grainy with poor contrast in a few select scenes, and most cross fades), with the sepia section intact. And the audio track is absolutely fine, too. SteveMc, The Illustrious Jerry and Naïve Old Fart 2
