The earliest it's arrived within the past year and a half is 3 hours, 15 minutes from now Out of interest, do you know which future titles correspond with which numbers, like 1527 or 1550? Or is the number only assigned late in the process, once the release is finished and sent off for approvals? I always figured it was assigned once the initial contract was signed with a studio and work began, but now I'm guessing there'd be a lot more blank numbers if that were the case (as presumably LLL have dozens of titles in various stages of completion at any one time). Popular Post Jay 37,364
The catalog numbers are assigned near the end of the process Every single thing can vary from title to title, but a general flow for the average title is 1) Getting the license(s) 2) Getting the elements 3) Organizing the elements, figuring out which need restoration work, figuring out a rough new program 4) Doing the restoration work on the elements, which can include re-doing original performance edits for some projects 5) Assembling the new program 6) Mastering the new program 7) Making sure you choose the best track titles for every single track of the new program 8) Sending it to the composer to get approval, which can result in changes to the program, the mastering, the track titles, or any combination 9) Sending it out to whoever else might need to approve it (lyricist, the film's director, JK Rowling, etc) 10) Research the liner notes, which includes finding old articles about the film, finding any interviews you can with the principal people (composer, lyricist, director, orchestra members) who might mention the film in an interview primarily about something else, maybe even do new interviews if needed 11) Writing the liner notes 12) Getting the liner notes approved by anyone who needs to approve them (the composer, the film's director, JK Rowling, etc) 13) Find out what photos from the film's production you'll be allowed to put in the booklet from the film studio, pay for those 14) Assign a catalog number and have the art director begin to make the booklet with the liners, the photos, and whatever else 15) Have to booklet go through as many revisions as needed until everything is right (the most recent one I proofread is up to revision 25) 16) Have the final booklet approved by everyone who needs to approve it (the composer, the lyricist, film's director, JK Rowling, the film studio, the music label, etc etc) (and obviously if they request changes, then that's more booklet revisions) 17) Register the new album and all its new titles with the publisher, getting internal ID#s you need for another round of paperwork 18) File all that paperwork 19) Send it off the pressing plant once every last thing is approved, and wait in line to get printed 20) Announce it for sale as soon as you can, typically the earliest this happens is once it's finally being printed, and the latest this happens would be when they already have it in their warehouse ready to ship. Depending on the title some of these steps can occur in a different order. For example typically you need to find out if the studio even has elements before you go after a license, or for another example there is one studio that actually requires you to submit a proposed new tracklist BEFORE they'll even grant the license or give you the elements. So you have to rely on what you can hear in the film and/or see in sheet music to propose something, and then file different paperwork to change it when you get the elements and learn there's new stuff in there you had no way of knowing about before (because it wasn't used in the film perhaps)... It's a miracle any title gets made at all, let along the dozen or so we get a month from all the labels combined. crumbs 14,316
Wowserz, Jay. You're right, it's an absolute miracle these things make it out at all. Everyone working for these labels are absolute heroes in my eyes! I know it varies from project to project, but I'm surprised how early the "composer listens to assembly" step is in the process, and how much work follows in its wake. I figured John would be given Mike's liner notes to review at the same time Mike hands his agent the CD-R of the assembly, but clearly this happens months apart. Does he review both the raw liner notes (in document form) AND the final assembled booklet? If so, that must be a huge thrill for the likes of Jim Titus and Kay Marshall, knowing their work is reviewed by the actual composer! 1 minute ago, pete said: Insanity! Popular Post Jay 37,364
There's no point in writing the liner notes until you have a a composer-approved album to write about. You don't want to spend effort writing about music that he might ask you not to include, or using track titles that he may ask you to change, etc. It all differs from project to project, but sometimes the raw text has to be approved before they bother formatting it for the final booklet; You don't want to spend the time formatting it out into 32 pages with all the photos and stuff only to find out some entity wants you to cut a massive section, and now you really only need a 24 page booklet with everything formatting completely differently as a result, etc. Other entities only look at the final PDF and don't need to need the raw liner notes beforehand, like the lawyer guys at the film studio who make sure the legalese block is correct. In the case of Johnny Dubs, I actually can't recall if he even reads and approves the liners or not. I know for Spielberg films, everything goes through Amblin for approval including the notes before they get formatted for the booklet. I think for the Potter box the HP division at WB had to approve the raw liners but I don't remember for sure Yavar Moradi, crumbs and Brando
crumbs 14,316
Good point! That makes total sense; the liner notes refer to track titles and the assembly itself, so it needs to come after the assembly is approved.
