A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001) - 2015 3CD set from La-La Land Records

Yeah, this is probably the last time I've put my trust in SAE.....................

Your "trust"? How have they broken your "trust"? Give me a break!

Uhm, 'trust' that I don't have to wait like 4 weeks to finally get the CD..? Wasn't that clear..?

(Sandor, sorry for my snarky response!! I was having a bad night and didn't mean to single you out. But having said that...)

I truly understand your desire to have A.I. in your hands (especially in light of others having received their orders), but it's been out for only 1 week (not 4)!!! And we're not sure when SAE actually had the sets in stock.

Granted, I don't know what your ordering/delivery experience has been with SAE, so I can speak only of my own experiences. I'm genuinely interested in knowing yours, though. Has it gotten steadily worse over time with SAE and this is the "last straw"? Has it consistently taken 4 weeks in the past to receive your order? How does their delivery time compare with other vendors, in your experience? AFAIK, SAE does not guarantee when a package will be shipped or received (especially to Europe).

SAE handles stock for dozens of CD labels, from every major (and minor) film music label and other large-scale labels out there, and is the sole distributor for the Twilight Time Blu-rays/DVDs, which draws in orders from a much wider audience than film music fans. I have seen first-hand the number of orders they pump out on a daily basis, and it's massive, especially on the heels of a new Twilight Time release!! In the past, I have accompanied owner Craig Spaulding on his runs to the post office, in an overly-stuffed SUV full of mail bins, each containing dozens of orders to be shipped.

To my knowledge, LaLaLand sells only their own CD releases and I suspect that they can focus on burning through orders for a new release pretty much immediately. SAE doesn't have that luxury, as they handle new releases (CD, Blu-ray, & DVD) from multiple labels every week, and may have quite a number of pending orders to fill due to back-orders on items from the various labels; for better or worse, they are at the mercy of the labels to provide them stock. Hence, Jay's recommendation above about ordering directly from the label of release.

FWIW, I live 65 miles from SAE, I ordered A.I. on the release date, and I received my shipping notice email yesterday.

I got it today! What a gem.

Seriously, this is the best film score Expanded Edition release I bought. Ever. I am not exaggerating. The music itself, of course, and its presentation are just perfect.

Just curious, anybody buying more than one set, for whatever reason (as a gift, just to have an extra set in case something happens to your first, or to sell it on ebay etc.)?

My gf's birthday is coming up, and I am considering buying her this set. She's shown interest in great film music before (mainly because of me)... :P

well, maybe I wouldn't get this for a birthday present to someone who has just shown interest in film music since it's more contemplative as it has been said. I would go with something more famous and "easy listening". And surely i wouldn't go with an expansion.

But in the end, you know her better. ;)

Well, I don't want to give her something anybody (or any regular guy) can give her... ;)

Besides, as Mikko wrote, "I would dare to recommend this also to the more casual fans wanting to experience a little bit different John Williams..."

Any regular guy wouldn't give a film music cd for a present in the first place! :D

Still pending here.

For the one who had an issue with my use of the word trust, yep, trust. If I give you my money for a product and I don't hear from you for over a week about the status, and no indication of where the item is or when it will be delivered, then yes, my trust in doing business with you will be questionable in the future.

Dude, just order direct from LLL next time. More money goes to them to help make the next release you want happen that way, to boot.

I always do that. If not, and I want to get something from several sources, I go with MovieMusic.com. Very good and reliable service.

I also ordered from LLL and received it yesterday (in the Netherlands), in perfect conditions. It was already in Amsterdam before the weekend, then it had to go through customs clearance before being delivered - so yes, LLL is really fast. Ordering through them is definitely recommended!

I'm listening to it now and it is GORGEOUS. Also, nice booklet with a lot of information, including slate numbers and all the names of the musicians etc.

And what a great score!! A masterpiece of harmonic inventiveness!

Jay, is there a way of finding out how many units have been sold so far? Or how close it is to being OOP?

No.

Ok, oh well.

Yep, agree, this set will be judged against all future JW expanded releases, as likely as not. They've set the bar very high indeed.

Did most people who received the set listen to the set in order all the way through for the first time? Or did you start by playing a few selected tracks before jumping into the whole thing?

Listening to the whole thing. I was already familiar with the highlights, I wanted to get the big picture!

I really like this "dark" style that John adopted in the 2000's. I need to refresh also Minority Report, which I believe has some similar moods here and there. A.I. is a pinnacle, anyway.

As a curiosity, I have noticed a small similarity between the end of "Henry is selected" and the beginning of Treesong. There is a very distinctive chord, A - C - Eb - Bb, which is played mainly by the strings in the film cue and by a combination of Harp, Piano, Celeste and Marimba in the concert piece. In both cases, the chord is enriched by other harmonic parts (the bass and some upper voices) which are different, but this central core is present and is distinctly audible. A very interesting chord, by the way!

I wanted to ask how did you listen to this release? (or how do you ever listen a release)

Did you play it in the background browsing in the internet?

Or did you just lie on a sofa/bed and just listened?

SAE is a fantastic online retailer. Don't take it out on them because you're impatient for a big release like this.

Listened to it all the way through. Three times so far. It's terrific.

As I never before attempted to create a chronological playlist, apart from the film, this listening experience is surprisingly smooth. And some unused bits certainly help to establish a more coherent personality. Thematically, that is.

The bottom line is, this release solidifies my opinion that A.I. is in fact Williams'best work of this millennium.

Did you only order A.I.? I regularly order at SAE, but I always throw several things together, usually the latest limited releases and some used stuff. It always takes forever to ship, and since their store software is pretty lame (or at least doesn't seem to give them a lot of control), it's never clear what causes the slowdown. But in the end I have a bunch of great CDs for a decent price and no customs. And since shipping from the US typically takes a week at least anyway, there's no point in being in too much of a hurry to begin with.

That's coming from a person with too much disposable income!

You should really stop commenting on other people's purchasing habits.

I now have dipped into it. Sound is much better than on either the Oscar promo or - yuck - the original release but there are a few cues, chief among them the album version of 'Abandoned in the Woods', that suffer from a terribly muddy basso profundo (it's not noticeable with the smaller ensemble or the more serene parts).

The more quiet first half with the harmonically slippery 'Hide and Seek' material up until the 'Moon Rising' sequence is almost a great psychological study (or score) on its own. After that, the music like the movie becomes a bit too unfocused and, dare i say, a bit too reminiscent of EMPIRE OF THE SUN with its humming choruses and majestical somberness.

Still, the Blue Fairy sequence and all that is written around it (the alternates, the specialist scene) gloriously brings things back on track and while my muted criticism of the reunion scene remains - Williams IMHO plays that too long too straight and sentimental, only reinforcing what is seen on screen and ignoring the ripe ambiguities - the whole of 'A. I.' is now up for reconsideration and probably at the top of Williams' post-95 period.

Must listen to it some more to form an opinion.

I listened to discs 1-2 while I was mowing the lawn, and then relistened actively to the whole thing at work this week :)

Honestly, I've gotten much more Thorish in my age, and don't really know how much more I felt I needed than the OST. It is definitely a much different journey in expanded form though.

Its really weird to listen to unreleased material (specially when the main program version is different to what you are accustomed to) after listening for this score for almost 15 years*...

*JPIII and AI promos where what drove me to this amazing webpage and forums! :)

I agree.

Though it won't be weird to me for this specific score since I've listened to the ost maybe 2 times overall, but it was weird with other scores that I knew the ost very well (eg. Hook)

For both Hook and AI I had been listening to custom edits that combined the OST with the other material (oscar promo for AI, boot for Hook) so the LLL edition wasn't as big of a "shock" as, say, 1941 (I never really listened to the iso score stuff), Empire of the Sun, or Indiana Jones 2

I listened to discs 1-2 while I was mowing the lawn,

doesn't seem like the best way to listen to it

It's a non-powered reel mower and I have good headphones, so I didn't really hear anything but music.

But when I'm less excited about music, I stick to podcasts during mows.
