Tom Wilkinson was among the finest, yet, understated, actors, of his generation.

It's just a shame that he couldn't do an American accent ;)

I wouldn't say "couldn't". Just "usually didn't." 😉 It has been forever, but he was OK in Eternal Sunshine, wasn't he? As opposed to, say, Batman.

What was he like IRL? His characters could range from unassuming schlub to towering powerhouse. Benjamin Franklin was nearly in a class of his own. (As both a character and an historical figure.)

Apparently, Laurie Johnson passed away last week, age 96.

I'm mostly familiar with THE AVENGERS, DR. STRANGELOVE and occasional conducting credits, but I believe he's more of a famous figure in the UK.

If he never did anything else, Johnson's place in the composing firmament would be assured, by The Avengers, alone.

It was last week, but RIP Peter Schickele.

After that intro, I was really wanting to hear the performance!

Chita Rivera has died aged 91, probably most famous for originating the role of Anita in the original production of West Side Story but only one role in an illustrious Broadway career. Me and the other half were lucky enough to meet her and see her perform (and technically perform with her!) on a musical theatre cruise a few years ago. She was still quite the performer and very chatty and delightful when we had the chance to meet her.

I was joking, but it is full of people I've never heard of.  I don't consider them celebrities.

Well in that case we shouldn't include any film composers here as even JW or Hans are probably less famous than half the people mentioned here.

This event may require a special commemorative thread given Ozawa's close association with BSO and John Williams!

It has one, a few threads down.

Richard Lewis.

After reading this I watched one of the new 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' episodes I'd recorded, and it had Lewis in it talking about his death... Spooky.

I got that beat. I went back to a 1988 special at the Improv with him, Robert Klein, Paul Rodriguez, Martin Mull, Billy Crystal, and Robin Williams. Where he talks about worrying about having a heart attack.

Professor David Bordwell has passed away, 76 years old:

https://www.indiewire.com/news/obituary/david-bordwell-dead-film-scholar-1234959386/

For those of us who have studied film, Bordwell was - along with his wife Kristin Thompson - a TITAN. For me, especially, books like CLASSICAL HOLLYWOOD CINEMA, FILM HISTORY and FILM ART: AN INTRODUCTION were seminal in my education.

A name I remember well from my Film Studies courses, along with Kristin Thompson. Still have this edition somewhere in storage. RIP.
