Fargo 297
Apparently there's going to be a Christmas special coming out this year, How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming. John Traunwieser is set to score it. I'm not familiar with the name, but apparently he's worked on an absolute ton of stuff. So I'm doubtful there will even be a release of the music. On a similar topic - does anyone watch that Netflix HTTYD series? Is the music any good on it? Or just typical filler music.
Arpy 4,145
John Paesano's score is alright, but it's a patchwork of material from the first two scores, and is mostly synth.

Popular Post Bofur01 245
Thanks EDIT: Just had a rough skim through this - I've listened to the OST countless times, and (excepting any micro edits and clean endings of some of the shuffled cues) the only new things I found were: Near Miss Valka (Whole track, dominated by a big Grimmel's theme statement which is fairly similar to those heard elsewhere on the OST) Stronger Together (Nice woodwind variants of the Fate riff before the Fate theme joins on strings. At the end, we hear a cool variation of the Village Hymn backed by the Berk theme Armada Battle Part 1 (I think the opening 45s are pretty much from the Battle of the Bewilderbeast in HTTYD 2) Aaaand... that is all I could find, but I would really like to be proved wrong Evanus, Edmilson, Smaug The Iron and 1 other 3
Popular Post Knight of Ren 792
I did a quick breakdown of how the OST and the FYC compare to each other, and there's about 2 minutes of previously unreleased music. The FYC is the film version of many of the cues, but there are a couple of tracks that have some fragments removed from the FYC, even though they appear in the film (tracks 2 and 11 from the OST). The highlighted tracks are the ideal film version playlist, and they were the same, I highlighted the OST version. OST vs FYC Feel free to correct or add anything you want! PS: It's such a shame that the big rendition of The Alpha's Theme that plays after 13. The Hidden World is not present in here. In the FYC it would be placed right before 20. The Hiccup I Know. scallenger 487
I had a feeling there wasn't much missing from the OST for this one, but wow I didn't realize just how little! Unless of course there was music left off of both releases, but to be fair unlike the first two films I haven't really compared. But hearing the slim new material from this FYC, I'm not real disappointed any of it was left off. Now if only we could have had an FYC for Solo... [crime of the century]... Arpy 4,145
There's a really great cue missing from both versions - it's the Hidden World Theme right after Hiccup, Astrid, Toothless (and Astrid's Dragon) escape the Hidden World, it's a lovely sombre rendition of the theme on horns and was one of the cues I was looking forward to listening to after seeing the film. An ideal release would be one mega How To Train Your Dragon - The Soundtrack Collection comprising all three complete scores - but that's a dream. That's probably why, but it's still a stupid reason on their part if so. The whole reason there are different Oscars for different aspects of filmmaking rather than just "Best Picture", is to reward films that excel in some specific areas while other films may still be better in other areas. The notion that a film can't possibly have the "Best Score" of the bunch just because the movie itself was a flop at the box office (or even if the movie was legitimately bad in every other aspect—which SOLO wasn't), sort of defeats the whole purpose of having an award that is supposed to reward a film's score independent of other aspects of the film. I wish the people in charge of these awards took this stuff more seriously. I don't care if a film is unanimously considered the worst film ever made in every area aside from its score; if the score is good, then it deserves recognition. Arpy 4,145
Disney weren't going to push something that had garnered such hate and apathy in equal measure. They've been quick to pull marketing from other giant flops because it doesn't look good for them - multi million dollar projects flushed down the toilet. 1 hour ago, Evanus said: That, and probably because it would have lowered the chances of Black Panther winning. I doubt it could've swayed any voter had it been submitted - same for Hidden World, but the true acknowledgement is the nomination itself.
Tydirium 1,168
Does anyone have a list of all the themes/motifs of the HTTYD trilogy? I feel like we should have a thread cataloging these themes and where they show up, like some of Jay's other threads for THE HOBBIT trilogy, THE BFG, etc. I am listening through the Powell scores again in order at the moment and am simply stunned by the extent of his glossary of themes for this trilogy... Safe to say this may very well be his magnum opus; it's like his equivalent of SW, or LOTR. And for a kids' franchise of all things, this is unprecedented. Popular Post Jay 37,479
Wow. WOW! Super late to the party here, but I finally opened up and listened to my physical CD edition of this album today. I don't recall if I ever listened to it on Spotify back in 2019 or not. What a great score! I don't know if it hits me the same way HTTYD2 in terms of that one striking me as a perfect sequel score. This is something different, but maybe even better. The old themes soar to new heights, and the new material is like, ALL really good. Although, I thought it was kind of funny that one of the new themes reminds me of Williams' Imperial theme from the first Star Wars movie (which Powell had just used right before doing this score, in Solo), and another one reminds of Owen's raptor squad theme from Jurassic World (gotta be a coincidence). I almost can't even say what tracks are highlight tracks, since there's just so much good stuff throughout the ENTIRE album! (Well, except for the final track with the Jonsi song. Yikes!) I think the track that left the biggest impression on first listen was "Once There Were Dragons", which acts like like a great concluding track for the entire trilogy, really. Amazing work. There's so many other highlights of course... Exodus, Third Date, The Hidden World.... wow. My anticipation for the Deluxe Edition has now skyrocketed. How cool that it was announced only 3 years after the film came out? I wish every score I loved could get expanded so quickly! I'm poking through the whole thread now as I give the OST album a second listen. I had completely forgotten that there was a suite track released digitally that wasn't on the physical CD edition. I'll check it out when I'm done! I wonder if the exact same suite will be on the DE, of if its component parts will be scattered in different places on the DE...
