Well, latin is a dead langage, it seems all cultures adapted the way to pronunce it, according to their own limitations. In Québec, it’s funny because some older persons still roll their ‘r’ (like in Italian), because at school in the 40’s and 50’s they were taught by nuns and priests. Popular Post Alan 689
I started to read all of the liner notes last night. I've just finished reading the notes for Azkaban so I thought I'd share my thoughts. They make for such an easy and enjoyable read! I for one am glad they we weren't given a track by track description of the music. I love the focus on Williams and his activities throughout the period he was working on Potter. The context really helps in my appreciation of the incredible work that he put in to creating these scores. It was also really nice to see the quotes and stories from the directors and musicians but best of all for me were Williams's own comments. I also really liked seeing William Ross's comment about COS being a Williams score through and through and that it was at Williams own insistence that Ross got an "adapted by..." credit. I believe I've seen this talked about before on the forum, but it was nice to see it in print and official in this way. It's also nice that we don't get a lot of heavy musical analysis in the notes because it leaves plenty of room for our own discussions and allows us to make our own discoveries. mahler3, bollemanneke and Once
Popular Post Jay 37,364
Yea, it's goddamn impressive that around these 3 huge Potter scores, he wrote 3 Star Wars prequels scores, 6 Spielberg scores, and 3 other scores as well. And did all kinds of concert pieces, concerts conducted, and everything else. And he was in his 70s. Popular Post mahler3 478
Yes, the whole timeline journey and back story of Williams recording in London makes for a very enjoyable reading experience. They are probably the most engaging liner notes I’ve read in recent times. Hearing from the musicians and Isobel Griffiths is also unique and the archive JW interviews all make it so comprehensive. crocodile 8,012
Yeah I think combining the "historical" context and then discussing musical themes is a perfect way to handle these scores. That way it invites you to listen carefully and form your own conclusions about the meaning and value of the work as presented on CD. That is the same reason why I always loved Doug Adams' notes on LOTR and his theme analysis. He gives you overview of the ingredients but then you can listen on your own and find those elements yourself and hear how they interact. It's more satisfying this way. Superman II is sort of like Williams Ross' HP adaptation only applied to an entire film with no new material. It's an effective enough extension but not essential. Superman III reuses a lot of that material as well but there is also some new material that sounds nothing like Williams. Superman IV is very much worth getting as it features brand new Williams material and more creative take on his original themes. Alexander Courage knows Williams from working with him and he doesn't lean on straight lifts. He actually creates new fresh variations and takes the material into often quite unexpected places. Sadly, the score is not as well recorded as Williams'. Stylistically, it has probably more to do with Goldsmith than Williams. But it's an interesting and entertaining take on this series. artguy360 1,843
I like it when other composers do interesting things with JW's themes/music. John Powell did a great job in this regard with Solo and Gia did alright in a few spots in Rogue One. The Harry Potter sequels were largely a snorefest or awkward with how they reused JW's music, especially one film's very clunky rendition of the motif from Quidditch, Third Year.
