The Tree from Mount Fuji - Park Chan-wook [The Handmaiden] FILM SCORE LABEL OF THE YEAR: La La Land Records, or Intrada BEST FILMS OF 2016 1. La La Land 2. Arrival 3. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 4. The Secret Life of Pets 5. Doctor Strange SPECIFIC HIGHLIGHTS OF 2016: Doctor Strange. To me, the score was one of the best we had this year, I thought it was entirely fresh and new material by Giacchino and I thoroughly enjoyed it. SPECIFIC DISAPPOINTMENTS OF 2016: It felt like the latter of the year showed no real great scores, for me at least I find my favorite score in the first few months of every single year. Also, all the celebrity deaths this year was very depressing indeed. Also Desplat being replaced by Giacchino, although, I figured it was going to happen. Oh, and how could I forget the total bs reasoning for Johannsson's Arrival score being disqualified for an Oscar. :/

publicist 4,643
I forgot Abzû, but it is video game territory, anyway. Other than that it could have been worse. With archival releases like The Lost World (LLL), The Blue Max (Tadlow), Thief of Bagdad (Prometheus) and several others, the old stuff still runs circles around new releases, counting the quantity of music and enjoyment i get out of it. No, just that I expose myself to a myriad of different scores, in all styles and across the globe. I've always felt that the 'year' distinction is constructed and fake, anyway -- I've never subscribed to the 'good year' or 'bad year' distinction. A year is year, with both bad and good scores. It's all a matter of where you look.

Disco Stu 15,495
I have edited my post with my choices above to replace Desplat's (wonderful, worthy) "Secret Life of Pets" OST with Jóhann Jóhannsson's "Arrival." I listened to it a couple more times over the past 2 days and holy shit, it's so great. No other changes made. I do want to give an honorable mention to Lesley Barber's score for the extraordinary movie "Manchester on the Sea." It works amazingly well in a few scenes that are carried 100% by the music. But the OST just isn't a substantial enough listen on its own to include as one of my 5 best scores of the year. I found a place for it in my favorite tracks. Which films are you referring to? Taking the Norwegian premiere dates as the point-of-departure is the ONLY thing that makes sense when doing articles on a Norwegian film site. As a film journalist yourself, you should know that. The criteria for the timeframe are listed on the main page of the list: http://montages.no/2017/01/arets-beste-filmer-topplister-for-2016/. I ran them through Google Translate: * The film premieres in Norwegian cinemas in 2016. * The film had premiered at the Cinematheque in 2016 (and do not get regular theatrical release in 2017). * The film has not gone in Norwegian cinemas, but was released on DVD / Blu-ray / VOD in 2016. * The film has been seen at the festival in 2016, and is currently tied with Norwegian theatrical distribution (if festival films we've seen this year will premiere in 2017, they will qualify for next year's list. For example: Elle, Jackie, chamber maid).
Jay 37,364
No one thinks its weird for you to follow Norwegian guidelines for the Norwegian company who employs you. It's weird when, outside your job, you come here to discuss the films of 2016 using the Norwegian criteria that defines your job, instead of doing what the rest of us are doing: Discussing the films that opened in 2016, and are eligible for the awards going on right now, rather than the ones already rewarded a year ago (because they opened in 2015). Thor 7,504
We've had this discussion before, and I don't feel like going into it all over again. I use my guidelines and you use yours. I live in Norway, so I use Norwegian premiere dates. Easy as that. Plus, awards aren't very interesting to me in the first place.
