I have friends that knew him in high school and had some interesting stories about him.  One worked with him at the Classical Annex of Tower Records and fondly recalls their conversations where he predicted he'll have a section in the music annex some day.  He wasn't wrong.

@karelm

James Horner's brother mentioned Classical Annex of Tower Records, but he wasn't sure because it wasn't very long.
Please tell your friends to contact me. It's not too late to include their testimony.
There's an online form on this page http://jameshorner-filmmusic.com/important-james-horner-missing-pieces-and-a-book/  or by e-mail.

Ok I will.  Can you PM me your email so I can tell him?  My first composition teacher also went to high school with him and Carrie Goldsmith and similarly remembers him from that period.  It sounded like he was pursuing/wished to pursue Carrie and who knows how much of that was because her dad was a super famous composer.

Who is the other one?

How long / when was James in Sedona?

Buy the books and read them to find out!

Please let there be e-book versions.  With my eyesight, I like the ability to enlarge the font size that e-books allow.

Nah, much as I love JH, when JG did a logo, he did a logo. Tyler's terribly pointless reinterpretation (or whatever you might call it) makes this point - who needs sampled choir and dodgy syncophated snare drums for the same bit of music?!

I wouldn't be surprised if he is; it would fit with his music.

What would you say is the best introductions to his music?

Including shipping for those who live in the US, one should specify. For the rest of us, it comes up as a whopping $23 for shipping.

I didn't like VIBES back in the day, but after a recent reassessment of Horner's 80s efforts, I've come to appreciate it a lot more. Not enough to buy it on physical format for $28, but definitely worth it for US Horner fans who miss it in their collections.

Oh yeah you’re right. Hopefully it’ll pick up soon. I realised I hadn’t contributed so have done so. Hope anyone else able to contribute can do even if it’s basically just ordering an advanced copy.

This most recent update may not be completely finished yet - For a few days, the site read "maintenance mode is on" and nothing could be accessed.

Thanks for pointing out the menu problem, it's fixed now.

Registration is not required to visit the site. It's just for posting comments and reviews.

The design was the same since 2013. It was time for a change. The pages will be updated gradually.

And I'd like to switch to a secure connection too (SSL), but I haven't managed it yet.

Any idea when the book will be available for pre order?

Since I am not acquainted with all of Horner's output, I'd like to ask, has he written any religious or religious-sounding scores?

Not in a literal sense (that I can recall, anyway). IN THE NAME OF THE ROSE, which includes religious affairs and backdrops, is mostly a chilly electronic landscape (but VERY nice for what it is...one of my favourite Horners from the 80s). HEAVEN HELP US, despite its title, is also not very religious-sounding, IMO.

Of course, if you think more broadly in terms of spiritual landscapes, on more of a personal than religious level, there are plenty, like my alltime favourite Horner score THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PAJAMAS.

I think there is definitely some in Glory and Legends of the Fall but might not be what you mean.  Do you mean biblical epics?  I am saying spiritual quality such as the boys choir in Glory and the apotheosis of the characters before their final battle but its more hymnal and spiritual than historical epic.

Not necessarily. Maybe the life of a saint or something like this.

Of course, I've listened to Glory and Legends of the Fall, thanks.

Really interesting question. I can't recall Horner scores written expressly for religious or spiritual subjects apart from those few already mentioned, but I have always thought some passages in Brainstorm (1983) had a "spiritual" quality to them, particularly those underscoring the "death and afterlife-like" sequences in the film ("Final Playback" comes to mind). I've often thought this was one of many qualities that really set Brainstorm apart as a unique score.

Can anyone tell me why the streaming gods decided that we must not under no circunstances have access to Horner's climatic 15 minute track from House of Sand and Fog?

Why is it unavailable to us here? And to which country will I need to take a plane for if I want to listen to this track on Spotify?

I believe it's some rubbish to do with the track running over 10 minutes in length. This was an issue from the past, but clearly it hasn't been resolved with every release on modern streaming. BTW it's the same issue for a track on Horner's Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius, Goldsmith's The 13th Warrior, and Zimmer's Radio Flyer (I'm sure there are examples of others). Whatever the reason, it's damn annoying.

Ah, and Goldsmith's Timeline.Screenshot 2024-07-07 at 12.16.46.png
